Ben was sui generis...no one ever sounded like him and no one ever will. His playing on just about any ballad he ever recorded is the yardstick against which all other versions are measured. His medium to up tempo works was just OK, but when things slowed down he was the man. IMO, only Stan Getz comes close.
Arguably the premier proponent of the ballad in all of jazz -obviously toward the end of his career; still with all his power.

I do not like his gruff style in normal tunes but in ballads his style is unmatched.
