This works for jazz soooo well, also. Great tips!
You got so far without even adding compression. Salute.
Blessings to you bro for this video!!! Thank you so much!! Seriously
Ayy no problem, I’m glad it helps 🙌🏾
This is perfect! Have a Sire v10 and been looking for this exact kind of advice. Cheers!
Glad I could help!

Do it man!🙌🏾
thanks brooo, we want more videos about RnB and Neo Soul bass!
great video!
Noted, I'm getting back in on the videos 👊
Very good advice! And covering many of the challenges we face over years of playing in a little under 17 minutes. So helpful. Thank You!
Happy to help!
This was inspiring for me and I love that line you play. I had to go pick up my bass and learn it. This sound, those nuances and vibe are the reason I just started learning and want to play the bass. Thanks for putting me in the right direction with this!
hey man, I'm glad it helped!
Great video by the way. 😊
Thank you for these tips brother this is really my almost need right now, I'm DKP from Africa 🌍
Thank you, I’m glad the video helped 🙏🏾🙏🏾
"i don't even know how to describe It" at 10.39 you described it pretty good! 👍👍👍
0:17 Subbed. What a great and useful video man, CZcams needs more people like you.
Thank you for being a part of it! I'm shifting more into careers as a creative but will definitely still be dropping bass & muso tips/tricks/ideas
thanks for this video, great tips and I really appreiate you not showing off and just using the same line over and over to illustrate the point best! nice one
No problem Danny, I’m glad you found the video useful 🙌🏾
i can believe u r teaching us free, thankss :)
Of all the videos on bass but even more so music, these are the ones to learn from. "You don't just hear the notes you feel them" Love it.
you are my new idol, thanks
Haha I’m no idol but thank you man 🙏🏾
Making sure your loved one stays happy and healthy potrays honestly all there good, our part
I love this!!! Might just convince me to finally get a Sire, too.
I doubt you'd ever regret buying a Sire for the money!
@@The_official_c it's funny you say that, I bought the P7 just a few months ago and it just keeps on delivering! Now I just have to get good haha
Good advice … I agree .. from a fellow bass man 🎸
Hey Caleb, Thanx!
Dude, thank you.
I got you!
Dude this was such a good idea for a video. I’m lucky to be able to understand naturally how to find tones with my finger/pickup/ampEQ/speaker (probably experience), but it’s such a not-talked about thing and for newer bassist, probably frustrating. I tried guitar very early on - it was a super cheap strat, all dials dimed, dry signal and flat EQ - and I hated the sound so much I stopped playing guitar. I didn’t sound anything like what I heard and my teacher never told me why or how to get there.
Thank you 🙏🏾 that’s the goal man, I know what it is to have no clue how to get particular tones out of an instrument!
That's an unbelievably sexy tone
Lit 🔥 video bruh 😎
Ayy thank you my man 👊🏾
thx a lot!!
You're welcome!
Nice Tips bro.. pls make a video on how to mix EQ on the bass amp.
That’s a good idea 🤝🏾
Love the video sir..... will incorporate these things you have stated......a few questions, What headphones are you using? And what devices are you using to record into it
Thank you soo badd
this is honestly a dope tutorial man
Thank you Gabe, any other sort of things like this you’d want me to make?
@@The_official_c YES hahah exploring tone is always cool man i gotta look at your channel some more but thank you!
Nice video…Backing track❤
Thank you 🙏🏾
What's the name of the track playing
That sound was beautifully executed. Next time if you had your right hand in the frame it would be great to see exactly how you are palm muting and using your thumb and finger at the same time. Otherwise, a nice video.
EXACTLY what I’d say as well. Smokin’ tips………
really nice. would be curious to see you try to tackle the erykah badu live bass tone on other side of the game. I took a lesson with Gouche and he said he boosts all his knobs on his bass max! lol
Send a link to the version 👊🏾
If you had a lesson with Sir Gouche and he recommended doing that I’d listen to him 😂
@@The_official_c here’s the link to the holy grail of tone. Badu live, other side of the game. Bass player: Hubert Eaves IV czcams.com/video/690MYP8ZSB0/video.html
You could also use "the hook" a la Chuck Rainey and James Jameson.
Pac, is it you?
Please make a video on how to get that voice tone. Dulcet.
Yo! I just picked up the Bass and I really want to practice this joint but having trouble copying your finger position. Which strings are you plucking using your right hand?
Thanks for the tips. Btw you have a striking resemblance of Tupac. Peace!
Too true
😂 it's not the first time I've had the comment 😅
Hahaha true!
I need to learn how to make that Bass Face
you got it!
Could you also do a video showing your effects like compression, EQ, saturation etc??
I don’t 🙌🏾 I’m really not a producer so you’ll usually be hearing the direct recorded sound from the bass and if I ever run through preamp it would be my Aguilar tone hammer or I’m experimenting with the Line 6 hx stomp in the last couple of months
@@The_official_c oh cool! Why don't u show is what you've been doing with the helix??
@@The_official_cwould love if you go over your HX Stomp presets I just picked one up and they are pretty nice but would be curious on your settings
bruh the one thing that convinced me was the fact you have the SAME exact bass i do hahahahahaha
Try it out man! 🙌🏾 killer basses
I have a bass with flat wound string, it's could be great. thanks for your tips 😉
flat wounds are great! I like the versatility of rounds though!
0:30 nice bass face!
Got it. Just shake my head and make funny faces to oil up my bass tones! Many thanks.
No groove is true unless the face can groove.
Subbed. Sick video. Great stank face.
Thank you Greg 😂
Thank you for this!
Maybe I missed it but what strings are you using?
In all honesty this video is so old I’m not sure! I’ve personally not found string brands to be MASSIVELY different in tone and regularly move around between strings. Never had issues with dunlops, d’addarios, Ernie ball or even bass centre. I’ve ran rotosounds too. I like the sound but they are a little grabby texture wise when playing so I tend to avoid those now.
But in general I go with a medium gauge round wound , 45 to 130 and ride the tone control to suit my technique and genre of the material
What are you using for an amp?
What do you recommend for a budget-friendly and apartment-friendly analog combo?
(I'm a guitarist starting out on bass so I have to buy a new bass amp).
What’s your budget my friend?
Can you do a video on Neosoul bass grooves/rhythms? I know you’re supposed to lay back behind the beat, but what are some basic go to shapes, rhythms/grooves, and progressions I can use to get myself started learning this style?
This is a great question! Thank you I’ve noted it down. In the meantime listen to Pino’s phrasing on the D’Angelo Chicken grease track. I think that pretty much hits the nail on the head for me 🙏🏾
@@The_official_c True dat, thats my favorite D'angelo track too! Yeah tbh that whole album is a Neo Soul masterclass lol
Hopefully on a live gig, the Soundman is good too. Some soundmen just shove the bass into the sub woofers via an aux send….with hardly any full signal on the bass fader… creates lots of mud…. Aux send on 8 and bass fader on two, lol. Then you get Boomy sound matching to the kick drum, but no clarity….then all the consideration of using a less defined tone doesn’t really help in the house. Then again if you have a great FOH engineer, life is good! Cheers.
Great point! Of course you’d have to work with soundman and room to tweak your sound. That might mean dialing in a little more mids but like you say a great sound engineer should be able to work the front of house
That’s why I only boost bass small amounts if necessary and more likely to pull up lower mids to add some ‘weight’ to the sound
@@The_official_c👍🏻
Great vid. What’s with all these super suave Brit’s taking over the bass world ? Oh well, they deserve it, they know their stuff.
WTF! You sound exactly like Stefan Guy!
I feel like you’re trying to talk quiet and not wake up the neighbours
Too bad i couldn't see your right hand...i'm still at a loss with that thumb/palm muting technique. Are you using just your thumb and index fingers?
Try a Precision bass with d’addario chrome flatwound strings.. better yet, a fender short scale mustang bass with flatwounds (chromes or la bella)... use ampeg BA amps or the Ampeg SCR DI.. tone at 50-70%, Ampeg SCRAMBLER TURNED ON 15-20% blend
This is my current rnb setting
love a mustang!
Bro could play Tupac in any biopic movies.
haha it never ends! people keep commenting this
What's the name of that song
I see what you did there 😂 I’ll show you how to make you P meaty! 😅
What amp do you use?
Aguilar ag700 now but what you were hearing was probably direct
i m new at basses, so i have to buy a 5strings and Jazzbass for have this sound (disco, rnb, neoSoul, Jamiroquai) ? i m lost Oo
You’ll want a 5 string to get the really low notes but you don’t need a 5 string to achieve the tone!
General rule of thumb, play softer, closer to the neck role off some tone on a passive bass or roll off some treble and a small bass boost 🙌🏾
@@The_official_c thank you for advise, i make music with vst.
last week i had fall in love of guitar and bass electric, because i discover there are low prize ( harley benton) i think i can be more creativ with it. the bass always attracted me.
and i thought its was difficult but since i learned some jazz theory, i see better. and i discover Tab too :o with 0 1 3 4 :o more easy than to read sheet .
thank you, u play super smooth, its inspire and motive me :
happy new year from France
Are you using flat wounds or round wounds?
These are round wounds - I find I get the most versatility out of it
@@The_official_c thanks!
"that will allow your pee to sound really meaty" haha
haha what can I say
what's the name of the melody you were playing
No specific song, although I’m sure you could find 10 different songs with a bass line like this 🙌🏾
Flatwounds?
not on the bass I played, they'll definitely help you there but if you're running 1 bass and need a versatile range of sounds (like a set with slap or more agressive tones along with more typical neo soul/r&b numbers) I've found it way easier to dial down my town than to brighten it up
you want real dub....go Flat wound strings....with some palm muting.... can't get any better....
Love flatwounds!
Are you related to Tupac? Your mouth and teeth pattern are almost identical. If you have a bald head I bet you could play him in a movie.
ha! I keep getting this
Tupac's British Son....👍🏾

Love this! I also have a 5 string american Jazz Bass!! what's your IG? I wanna follow you
