Well the harsichord has a diffrent sound production compared to the piano. And it was never written by Bach for the piano. Because the piano didn't exist in Bachs time.
Gould's performance in 1955 was pure commercial propaganda! 39 minutes for a work of at least 80!! Moreover in my opinion 80 minutes of G major are really boring. Bach composed wonderful music, but this is almost a technical exercize.

Same goes with the Well Tempered Clavier works; there is never a natural reason of only artistic expression to order pieces by rising semitones, etc. To a listener who only knows “I want to enjoy some music for this little while” it will seem boring and unintelligible. They are like puzzles or as you say exercises, when a casual listener isn’t listening for puzzles or riddles. This actually makes it even more beautiful and amazing in my opinion, very unique works and Bach was probably aware of these things I’m saying though on that point I’ll admit I don’t have enough musical understanding and experience to truly say I know it.

Karl Richter makes so many mistakes in this live record, but it's still a precious recording! Thanks for uploading!
Mistakes are making the music human.
thats whats make this original unique
And now I am going to try to go to sleep, just s Count Goldberg did (supposedly).
I am NO aficionado, but I find his playing without compare, but that is just me!
You are not alone.

His timing is very odd. Almost lurching.
This sounds muddled and unclear on the harpsichord compared to Glenn Gould's piano rendition
