Joey literally almost won. Only by Marik's magic BS causing Joey to pass out from pain saved Marik from his loss, Joey was starting to declare his winning attack when he passed out.
He straight up almost puked because of that in the manga. Kaiba noted he'd at least respect Joey as a duelist in death due to this.
Amazing episode.

The beauty of this episode is LittleKuriboh voicing the Pharao imitating Tea who is also voiced by LittleKuriboh obviously, and it sounding believable.
I was so proud of Joey when I watched the original duel.
Which also meant that I was pissed off when he was forced to lose for the sake of the plot.
But it's still worth considering that for all intents and purposes, JOEY DEFEATED THE VILLAIN.
It always blows my mind to consider and think about it. Marik's "shat my pants" expression was priceless.
yeah joey is a great duelist who only losses when the plot calls for it..he even beats atem...he should of been the protagonist...yugi is so bland
If the Battle City tournament was real and none of the shadow games BS was involved, the tournament would be very different.
Technically speaking, Mai also had him beat. If she had just attacked him with her Harpies instead of trying to summon Ra, she would have beaten him. Really let that sink in.
True, but then again, Joey also won in a similar way against Odion.
If Odion declared an attack with his scorpion he would've won easily against Joey. Only lost because Marik forced him to use Ra.
Both fights the one who was about to win got KO'd by Winged dragon of Ra.
To be fair, he was really really close. If he wasn't unconscious via mental torture he would've won
It's classic anti-divine intervention, like when Yugi should've beaten Pegasus at the start of the series but time ran out even though an attack was already declared
And that's the reason why Marik is such an incompetent villain. Mai outplayed him hard and should have won but plot armor bullshit let Marik win. Joey was on the cusp of winning but again the plot protected Marik................. Talk about pathetic lol
Sammy Dray All the villains suck at the card game. The only exception is Pegasus, and he was both cheating with his Millennium Eye, and running cards only he had access too, thanks to owning the game.
@@SakuraAvalon Marik final deck against yami is actually very strong. Spamming Monster Reborn.
@@user-lh5my4ws8j It's really not. With the exception of a couple cards, his deck is slow, and doesn't really pack much punch. Great against the decks the anime users have, terrible against real life competitive decks.
@@SakuraAvalon It must suck being a Yugioh villain because getting access to all the mystic items you need for your villain schemes involves having to play a nonsensical card game

Fun fact Joey would have won if it wasn't for plot reasons and in the English dub he had a monster in the field and was about to declare an attack but then collapsed while in the sub he was right in the middle of declaring an attack then collapsed
