ASUS sent us two laptops; the ASUS Zenbook UX5400 for everyday work needs and the ASUS ProArt H5600 for the creators out there. The ProArt is rather interesting with a rotary knob, which honestly is something we hope we see more in the future!

I love how crab rave is being used as a sound test for all the laptops
Probably a licensing thing.
@Quantum dude - be careful - you might already know too much!
@Not RickRoll 👇ᨆ When will we get a side by side comparison of all the Crab Raves tho?
Welcome to ShortCircuit. First time here?
@Quantum their intro song on linus tech tips is from the same music label with crab rave
Original Title: "Every Laptop Should Have A Knob"
Never knew a dick joke could be executed so smoothly
@@somekindofmaster3548 Knob is British slang for dick.
Clever. My lap top has a knob
I mean, they're clam shells... So we're getting into interesting double entendres here with all these cunning linguists
Current title as well.
My laptop doesn't have a knob (it does, but it's not as big as the one in the video.)
More powerful than I'd ever want? No, no, that's not how this works.
my laptop is super powerful and i almost never use it to it full potential lol
Exactly! We have to work on laptops at work, so it's never too powerful!
Exactly my sentiment! (
Is this video like hyper saturated or am I high? Alex's finger nails looks like he dove in to the world of the pink fairies, but with vigor
i thought he was bleeding from his fingernails before i realized it was the colors being weird
I think it's mostly the b cam that's off to the side, cause from the wide cam, all the colors look fine.
@Nom You watch YT videos on TV?
ltt videos have been hyper-saturated for like 3 years but this vid seems even brighter
@@mini9503 plenty of people do. Is that weird? Most TVs have CZcams built in nowadays
I used to pronounce ASUS correctly before I "learned' it from Linus when he keeps saying Asooos, thanks Linus
For english i think its "Aye sus", but as a non native english speaker i do pronounce it as "A sus" in my lang.
Been working in the industry since 1998 and up until the last 5 years or so it had always been commonly "Asooos" everywhere I worked. Until social media platforms came along to educate us I just think us nerds didn't know any better.
To be fair Asus NA manager (the bulky looking guy) even pronounced it wrong… so I don’t blame him
He also says Cjuupon instead of Coupon
A sus
Color correction was a bit over done. Some of the red in Alex's skin just straight up turns magenta.
I was wondering if anybody else was seeing this. Two of my monitors have bad color, but not *that* bad.
I think maybe your screen is overly tuned. I’m watching on an iPad Pro m1 and it looks excellent. All the tones are very natural.
I’m having the same issues, particularly his hands in shadows during the closeups when he’s talking about the ports. Also, when he pointed out how black the OLED was in the corners, I could distinctly make out that the screen was more grey compared to the black bezels, so I’m not sure what happened with the colour correction here
I think he was just bleeding... dry weather causes skin to crack
You’re just racist against red people.
I love the idea of having a knob to like zoom in and out when doing CAD modelling.
The middle mouse button is also awesome for CAD
"Every Laptop Should Have A Knob!" Strongly agree with that statement
I agree!
Seriously agreed
Absolutely agree
Definitely agree
As someone that never uses them. Never have had one in my way so I see no reason why not.
I’d love to see a full laptop roundup for a range of different budgets and use cases done on LTT
This ☝️
The ASUS Zenbook 14X actually has a touchscreen option with the OLED screen (both the AMD and Intel version)
True, I'm thinking about etting the ryzen 9 version with touch screen
I have the UX345 and I love it, the trackpad is good for watching videos while writing I find. You get used to that keyboard after an hour or two.
Alex, thank you for taking the little tip about muting instead of pausing when showcasing audio
I currently have the older version of the zen book and I use the touch pad display all the time. It is especially helpfully in class, cause you can put notes on it, and instantly with a three finger tap, make the touchpad goes black.
Plus it’s nice for music apps.
Its not cheating, it’s resourceful
I still feel it's a niche use case
16:13 i can really hear james pumphrey screaming GIVE IT THE BEANS from here
Ahaha yeah
The XPS 15 blows my mind more and more every time Alex compares it with anything else. The small one comes very close though!
7:00 - Those keys are something quite useful for code editing where you have to navigate a lot instead of just type.
It is very frustrating that most laptops are made with keyboards with Page up/down, home and end combined with the arrow keys which they also make smaller.
I'm not sure if anyone else would agree but I'd like to see you include such things in your reviews. Maybe make a video about good laptops for software developers?
I have the Asus ZenBook 14
(no touch screen trackpad but mine has the numpad with LEDs)
i7 1165G7 and 16gb ram
it's the best laptop I've ever owned. Very happy with it
*Linus uses 2 hands on touchpads?!* Well I'm glad that he can't review laptops anymore /s
I love how Crab Rave is now the official LMG sound test
It always has been and it's truly beautiful :D
It got highs, it got base, it got crabs, it got everything
@@Rockmaster867 so true!
Copied comment, nice! 😃
I wonder when did they switch from supernova to crab rave
>ShortCircuit
>18 minutes long
You were suppose to be the chosen one!
My god, the editor is having a field day with the editing and I love it 🤣
No 💩 lol
Keep in mind that the sound profiles on the speakers are usually changed by a software layer, such as Dolby compression, which will affect how things sound through the speakers. A lot of the difference that came through CZcams compression over to me sounded like it was just a different profile of how the systems compressed and amplified the middle frequencies vs. low and high frequencies.
Your remarks on astigmatism and OLED screens are welcome. I have always had this problem and am hoping that there will be some solution as more and more screens go this way. As you say, the problem is more acute when reading text on white backgrounds. If IPS screens ever disappear completely, my job as a writer and editor could be numbered.
I'm noticing a large difference in quality to your content over the last few months good on yall keep up the good work. From meme channel to my favorite tech tuber, love yall thanks for the quality vidoes im glad to have a one stop shop for tech.
The sound looks like a matter of EQ it, one of them has more high-end, the other is more middle focused
I have the Flow X13 with the 3050Ti (no egpu) and I absolutely love it. I do loads of writing on my device and I can also run CAD and games well.
Assign the middle and right trackpad buttons to left and right click. Use the left one for a custom function.
I have a Sony vaio with a Jog dial as they called it it was used for media function and quick navigation for the start menu. Knew laptops needed a knob back in 2000 glad to hear it now.
This means we can play Doom on the trackpad
I have a slightly lower end zenbook with a MX350 and a 4500U and I’m extremely happy with it!!! Extremely low temps even when gaming and a great battery life! And don’t tell anyone. But it can run battlefield 5 on low settings, shhhhh don’t tell the enthusiasts a budget laptop can run AAA games
Thanks for the bright red arrow and highlighting, I wouldn't have been able to see the knob with you only literally pointing at it.
10:43 You can have palm rejectoion for a click, as long as the palm is also touching the track pad, or if there is capaicitive sensors where your palm would rest on the palmrest while typing, making the physical buttons inactive
My guess is that the reason these were included is because its hard to be precise with a trackpad, and even harder to have a precice click with a trackpad without moving the mouse when you click
tbh I hook up a mouse to all my personal laptops so a track pad being good or bad doesn't matter to me
I hadn't really heard of the MX450 before this video, so I did some digging. It's apparently similar to the GTX 1650 max-Q, but with a 64 bit memory bus and a TGP of 12W to about 30W. It uses a PCIE gen 4 x4 link. It should be between the mobile 1050 and 1650 in performance.
It's not. This is MX450 "Max-Q" version which is roughly 10% better than Intel XE Integrated GPU.
@@mini9503 So this is the 12W version then. I didn't expect that to have much behind it, but 30W (28.5ish) seems ok.
@@DigitalJedi Right, but according to Notebookcheck there are no known laptops that use the 30W version of MX450, they are all 10W with half the cores and half the speed. I think it's not an improvement over the igpu.
Knobs are the best!!! Ever since I had my first little red knob I was hooked!!!
regarding the mousepad screen on the Zenbook: at work, where I'm docked with mouse and keyboard, I use that screen as my "inbox" screen... something I need opened but not taking up other screen space ;-) (I have the previous version of the Zenbook)
Knobs/wheels should’ve been standard on a lot of things ever since the Corsair k70.
I own the Asus pro art with a Quadro 3000, definitely upgrading to the new pro art! The screen is 16:10? That's amazing!
A 3:4 display?
@@fairyball3929 aspect ratio. So it's not a traditional 16:9. So you get a taller 4k display and supposedly it's the first oled display of it's kind. Kind of impractical. But for design work, in my eyes it's great.
@@SlyMcfly For portrait works? Huh, I didn't think there would be a market for such equipment, but, neat.
@@fairyball3929 it's just the size difference that helps having a taller screen helps with more multitasking vs for video consumption. It's basically why all the surface models come with that same aspect ratio. For business it's awesome, for gaming not so much. Combine that with the color accuracy that the pro art series have and you get an on paper amazing display and workstation laptop.
@@SlyMcfly I would imagine that extra vertical space would be handy. BTW, just curious, did you mean to type 3:2 instead of 3:4? 😯
It amazes me that laptops lack a button to disable the trackpad and it's buttons. That used to be common to avoid the accidental tap/drag from the palms. I LOVED that on several laptops I used to have... along with "automatically disabled with mouse plugged in". IMHO these should be essential features for laptops, especially with massive trackpads we see today.
The rotary knob is great for way scrolling when doing productive things…. Scroll and still able to move the mouse would make flow on the computer so easy for everything… even business stuff
The only workplace you could call out "Cut his hands off", talking about your boss, and to be completely okay xD
I can see the lower screen being useful when you have a mouse plugged in. You could use it as extra real estate for video editing like that, which is probably why you can bring the cursor down there. I imagine having a hotbar for Photoshop or something you can touch might also be useful, and you could use it for fine control in certain applications like with the knob on the larger one.
While using it as a trackpad, it might be useful for quick shortcuts, and control of background tasks while in a fullscreen task on the main screen.
It really should automatically disable moving the cursor to the trackpad screen unless you have a mouse plugged in, though. There is no reason you'd ever want to bring the cursor down there while your meaty paws are covering it, and I can imagine losing track of the cursor sometimes when you accidentally move the cursor down there.
I'm pretty sure certain types of OLEDs can have a dirty screen effect that is easily noticeable to anyone, but it depends on the unit. Having dirty areas that are only visible in certain shades is just an OLED thing, thought I guess it would be more prevalent on OLEDs with smaller pixels, like laptops and handheld devices. Personally, I have only seen this effect on my PSVita. Not that LCD's don't have their own screen uniformity issues, but they tend to be different.
Holy sheez, I never knew about that palm retention stuff until now, my Elitebook seems to be doing it well.
You used the music of the channel Thech Ingrediants at min 6:00
btw. are you testing their thermal compound over at LTT?
7:55 there's no such thing as "eye stigmatism", it's astigmatism, kinda like when people say "logrithm" instead of logarithm
ATM machines. NIC card... they just keep going don't they?
@@graceforged84 that's a separate issue
Ok nerd
Oh, I agree. I just got on board noticing people saying things incorrectly. Or, redundant, if you prefer.
Using the term stigmatism actually means there is no astigmatism.
are there new video editors at LMG cause this video has blown out colors
and I saw 2 videos at LTT which were very choppy and were lagging in certain places.
cool shoes ad! apperciate that they're so minimal ;]
First ad that I commented on since the beginning of youtube :O @ShortCircuit
Thumbs Up!
Regarding Home, End, Pg up, Pg dn buttons... They are super useful as a separate keys and not as a function-arrow combo, especially if you do programming on a laptop. For me personally, if a laptop doesn't have these, it is a deal-breaker, no matter the specs and price. I am glad to see some companies, especially HP and Asus keeping these as a separate buttons. I know that Alex mentioned a couple of times how he doesn't like this because the keyboard is slightly moved to the left, but this is VERY important to some people.
A surprising amount of computers already do have knobs. They're mostly positioned about 40cm from the screen.
What? I can't read ur comment my screen is blurry
a knob would be a gamechanger for working in a DAW, I wish they would have tested to see if the knob can be easily configurable for Ableton and the likes.
Guessing you can map it quite easily, get them attacks and releases knobbed up :P
I also want more laptops with dual-screen like the Zephyrus Duo (aka. ROG Duo), but I'd like them to have 2 joysticks per laptop (joysticks like the ThinkPad's knobs, not like the rotating knob of the laptop in this video). to be gaming-ready. A knob can be to the left of the Up key and above the Left key (or to the right of the Up key and above the Right key if you have a numpad without the trackpad), and the other between Esc and the ~ key, or you could have the Esc moved to the right, to make room for the joystick. This way, laptops could double as pseudo-consoles, and using FN keys one could turn each joystick individually into either an analog controller, a cursor, or a scroll (both up-down and left-right). Please mention this in a few videos, so laptop manufacturers and keyboard manufacturers start doing that.
I think there was more to that touch screen pad, maybe in gaming it has graphic buttons(4×4) or being able to swipe through your weapons, video or music production be able map your own board, be able to swipe LR select and UD to adjust.
For a similar level of performance to the flow x13, the vivobook pro 14x would be worth a look! (RTX 3050Ti)
No usb-c charging (may be a deal breaker for me)
Linus like 2 years ago: "Do you really need a warning to tell people not to touch the screen?I guess some people are doing it,it's the younger generation"
regarding the touchpad.
The ASUS N76VZ had a option that you could disable it. but due driver issues with windows 10 this is not possible anymore
10:17 could've moved trackpad to the right here so it would be under arrow and num keys
Framework should have a knob
I keep hearing touchscreens on laptops and Thunderbolt talked about as if they are a feature that EVERYBODY wants, but I couldn't care less about either and am happy to not pay a premium for them. Are these really key features for most users?
Would love to hear everyone's feedback on whether they want/need these features or not.
I dont need touchscreen on laptop, i also dont like convertibles
@@Ob_Bashar a convertible to me at least makes more sense than a touchscreen on a laptop. When I use a laptop I have the keyboard at a comfortable teach distance, meaning to use the touchscreen I would have to stretch to reach it. A convertible I would at least be holding the screen at a comfortable reaching distance.
I absolutely want a touchpad and stylus input. Infact, my secondary screen not being touch bums me tf out
That ProArt laptop is 1999USD for that many features. That's crazy value for what it's packing.
I have the Lenovo legion 5 pro and while it has the number pad on the right shifting the main keys to the left, they also shifted the entire track pad to the left to be centered under the space bar.
Red is really saturated in this, re-up almost necessary, Blue on the deskmat is literally sparkling as well
"Every laptop should have a knob"
Thinkpad: Amateurs
I feel like the display under the touchpad would be more useful with a wireless mouse so you could assign app specific macro keys to it. At least then you can get some benefit from it?
Did you use some sort of chroma keying or something else in this video? The quality's really off for me and there's a lot of shimmering. The blues have especially high saturation.
I still believe in what LTT says.
A knob reviewing a laptop with knob.
Sorry, don't mean it. Just wanted to comment it.
5:36 It looks like it's using the trackpad as a second monitor. If you tried, you could probably bring a program down to it lol
Why exactly is "this" comment pinned ??
I like that oled trackpad if you plugin a mouse its useful for other things c: seconds screens are very usefull
The editing on this episode is God damn perfection
You're maybe a bit too sure a full-size SD card slot is better. Many point-and-shoots use microSD. For me, working with raspberrys and arduinos, there is the constant search for the adapter, can't leave it in as it tends to come out when I bag the laptop (enough pressure to activate the clicky ejection mechanism). I'd very much prefer the micro-sd slot, don't remember when I last needed a full-size one.
Someone needs to tell the editor about sound equalization. that vessi spot was super loud
Any chance to compare it to a great Acer Conceptd 5 pro ver.2022, full review, thermals etc
The Fujitsu Lifebook s760 had an extra round touchpad that was specially meant for scrolling. That was 10 years ago!
Like, that little trackpad screen, can EASILY be great for a dedicated chat window
Could I ask that when the specs are rattled off we get a bit more specificity on the wifi standard? A bunch of companies seem to be just leaving their wifi specs as "Wifi 6" which isn't as specific as, say, "802.11 g/n/ac/ax". Especially on laptops where it's a genuine concern that some of the older modes may be omitted in an effort to save... something or other.
I thought this was a case where the official naming was transitioning to numbers. Also, are there devices that support wifi 6 (ax) and not g or n or ac? If so, then I completely agree with you.
@@syndaquil4838 I'm not sure what you mean by "official naming" - the standards are still named 802.11[section], since that's how they're laid out in the standard. And yeah, I've been burned before with an 802.11ax-capable router not supporting 802.11g. That was a bizarre problem to troubleshoot, and frankly didn't make a whole lot of sense. But I guess it's a thing we need to keep track of now.
I still haven't been able to order the flex 13 with the 3050. They're still offering the 1650. Does anyone know when it's supposed to launch?
In the zenbook the touchpad can be used as a second display if you look at the settings
you are the best because test speakers plus screen good job
Something in the video is not right the black mouse pad as red marks on the edges? Is the same on my S10 and S21 and my mom and sisters P20, P30?
Maybe it's just me, but does Alex's finger tips look like they are red when unboxing and handling the laptops? I never noticed that before and it stands out in this video.
Glad to see a premium laptop with a trackpad and buttons instead of a rotten clickpad, and I love the knob. Wish it wasn't super premium professional material though so I could justify it.
Does LTT get to keep these samples sent to them?
Alex is a LEGEND when it comes to unboxing laptops!!!!
Gotta love a nice set of knobs
Many of the things that you don't like about those laptops are the entire reason why I like those laptops. For instance the 3 physical buttons and keyboard layout look like they might actually make portable game development viable.
My dekstop keyboard also has a knob-like wheel. And unsurprisingly, it was also made by Ay-soos.
OLED trackpad would be good if you're using a mouse and need macro shortcuts like what you see in an Elgato Streamdeck or external keypad. Definitely concerned about burn-in with static images though.
You can enjoy the knob doubly, because of the mirror you and it look at all the time.
Is the Zenbook not released yet? Where can I buy it in the US?
8:20. Ohhhh interesting. I can see the pixel grid on my Lenovo legion 5. I mean it's only 1080p sure, but it's a good 1080p display and this is the first time I've ever been able to see pixels (not pixelation) on a display. Maybe I'm just going blind lol.
ProArt Studiobook 16 also has 2K 120Hz LCD version and at about the same price of M16 here, WOW!
4:30 i only double hand a track pad on Chromebook because the left click is so sensitive
The new ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED (H7604) specs are AMAZING for the price rn!!
That 14 inch laptop would have been a very solid choice if they put something like a 3050 class card instead of the mx.
Aye-Suess 1:37 (like Dr Suess)
so hilarious you guys 🤣😂🤭
8:24 i like that LINUS toy on the shelf where can you buy it
I swear ASUS makes the best downfiring speakers, bounces off the table and amplifies the sound like crazy
I was looking at pro art, and the thub track alone as a novel feature I want to see more of, also bought the 15 .6 pro Radeon vega gr with number calculator trackpad and 3050 ti discreet, but being larger and a bundle I feel as though I may face some of the same issues, however good it may be at just about everything ☺️ I should have watched these reviews, it's actually the thumbpad that brought me here, but being that if I actually use the controls and the mouse I bought fits form well, the regular finger touch, also hoping it has touch screen, that maybe all I'll really need. Just relying on there being some touch functions and gesture because I use it all on a TCL phone so why not have that in a laptop that's competitive with MacBooks on the creative fronts?
Ps. The graphics and mouse use may just be a winner!? Ha 😁 I don't even know the game
I use a 2018 MacBook Pro to edit 4K ProRes RAW over Thunderbolt 3 off a QNAP RAID 5 NAS - once I convert to CinemaDNG - I wonder what my performance would be over Thunderbolt 4 ? I heard it’s backwards compatible… does the Ryzen NOT support Thunderbolt while the Intel does???
