    great video, although a sidenote - this doesn't have to be Kali linux at all. you can do it on any distro and as a matter of fact can be easily done on a RPI. just apt install steghide. this is also a great way of hiding stuff that you (I) always forget in things like public images just to be able to retrieve them later at some point when you forget them. Nobody would suspect a random picture on your insta to contain vital information

    i hid a bitcoin wallet address in a doom map 2 years ago :P the one place no one would ever suspect. or be able to figure out even if they did, because even if you had the map it was pretty much impossible to figure out because it was hidden in the X coordinates of vertexes along a specific wall and you needed a separate lookup table to make sense of it (that was hidden in a texture i used in the map), even if you knew that the message was there in the first place, which you wouldn't because there's literally no signs of it.
    then i realized that wallet wasn't worth that much security and just dropped it. i wasted so much time doing that, lol. also the wallet is empty now.

    @Alkaris Před 5 lety +5

    @11:35 there is two very noticeable things about the image than just the file size. It's pretty easy to see the image colors are degraded when compared together.
    also I just want to point out a couple other things here, Steghide is the backend, but there's also Stegosuite which gives you a GUI frontend of Steghide which makes it all the more easier for people who aren't use to using command line stuff. It is however limited to using certain images when hiding files such as BMP, GIF, PNG, and JPEG. -- Also one other tool to the Steganography set of tools is Stegsnow, stegsnow is a whitespace steganography program which appends hidden secret messages in text files in the form of tabs and spaces to the end of a file.

    Around 14:25 presenter suggests data is hidden in areas where image has lots of details, like in cat's whiskers, but that's not necessarily the case as JPG images are typically compressed when saved. Different compression levels mean different changes to images. So for example when image A is saved with milder compression than image B, then that causes differences.

    not directly embedding but you can "hide" data "in" images using the dos copy command in cmd. creates a non-compressed zip with the image as its front disguise.

    Just put al, the stuff into a folder, then zip it and rename the extension so your pc thinks it is another file type. Try renaming it to a dll file and make the whole file name sound convincingly like a system file. Then send the person a video game and put your secret file in the game folder. Only they will know how to open it. This is more effective if you zip it to 7z or another format in case someone already knows this trick

    some files like someone else said, are available to the public and thus you can compare it not only but the size but if ur like me, can see minor changes. EG: if you look at the side of the head then there is a minor little difference in color. idk if anyone else can see this but I can. I looked hard but it was easy.

    An easier way to do this without needing a VM or Knowledge in Linux or Kali is to simply download the compression tool called 7z.
    Bellow are the steps:
    1) The first thing you will need to do is create the file you want to hide in your image file. This can be done from 7z. Create a compressed file with all your files inside (Password optional).
    2) Use the windows command prompt and Type "CD FolderLocation"
    3) Use the windows command prompt and Type "COPY /B Image.jpg + HideMe.7z Output.Jpg"
    And there you go, Output.Jpg now contains your hidden files. If you want to extract these files you can use the 7z.exe command line.
    Bellow are the steps:
    1) Open Notepad
    2) Type the following into the NotePad --> C:\Path\7z.exe e -y Output.Jpg -o"%~dp0" -p"Password"
    3) Save as an .bat and run.
    And there we have it. A much more simple and easier way to do exactly what was done in the video without a VM or Linux.

    There is a way to detect it with the first example if you have the image side by side. The colours on the steg'd image are a bit more faded (notice box and the colours on the steg'd image compared to the ref image) but again, people wont know if it is steg'd if they dont have the ref image

  • @HamayounAhmad

    I think your image pixel comparison part is fool. These dots on the edges are due to cosine fourier transform used in JPEG compression data is not saved at the edges. Data is saves somewhere else but that storage effect the CFT calculation.

    You can do something similar in windows:
    you have a.jpg and b.rar, you run: "copy /b a.jpg + b.rar c.jpg" and you got c.jpg which is a working image, but if you open it with an archive program like winrar you can see files in it.
    This is the binary copy
    It isn't encrypted it just copy them to one file.

  • @PrinceWesterburg
    @PrinceWesterburg Před 5 lety +1

    No, no, no! In Windows:
    Get fluffy cat pic and call it a.jpg
    Get file to hide and call it anything that appears later in the alphabet
    Create a zip file with both that uses no compression
    Rename the zip file 'fluffy cat.jpg'
    You now have a jpeg with a file attached, Windows and Mac both see it as a jpeg as there is no compression.
    Very old trick however all these things come undone when a VGA res jpeg is a megabyte or more!

I could only hide text on the image by converting it to ascii and writing pixel by pixel the text ( if I encouter a 1 in the ascii then I rise the RGB value of a pixel by 1else i do nothing ). And to decript the message, the original image was needed in addition to the one with the message in it, by comparing them i could retrive the hidden text
    Hope that make sense

    What happens if you crop the picture? Wil you be able decrypt the remaining info in the embedded file? And BTW there is a Channel interfering your sound Channel playing annoying Music.

    Thats why some images will be at like 1600000x900000 resolution so they can be soo large that someone can hide their entire porn libary in it.

    What is the name of this background music?
    I did find it before, but it has vocals in it. I'd love to have this instrumental version only, sounds really fun in my opinion. :)

      For what reason did I not find this before... I swear I have tried and every one of them would have odd vocals in it... Thanks!
