At 1:25, Barenboim probably thought "OMG, this orchestra is so great, it doesn't need me", but he kept on conducting a bit later, so he could enjoy the music in full.

Superb! Maestro Barenboim at times shows that feel of musical highness only a few conductors can reach...

If an orchestra can show up with THIS out of its sleeve, how grand it must be!

Was this ever used in an old Errol Flyn/Douglas Fairbanks film? I can almost smell the gunpowder and swashbuckling from here.

None to my knowledge but it's safe to assume Korngold, the score composer, was influenced by Wagner. I do remember this exact piece used as the score of a Sinbad cartoon in the early 90s.

Es muy curioso y aleccionador que un Director de Orquesta Judío Argentino dirija una obra magnífica de un compositor alemán con fama de antisemita...!!!🎉

    Utterly terrible, much too fast!

It was fast but not too fast, it's keeping within the spirit of Wagner. Very interesting how he slowed down the ending there - great finale imo.

Listen to the recordings of this piece conducted by Maestro Bruno Walter and you'll notice no difference in pace. And nobody could say Mr. Walter had no wagnerian expertise. OTOH, Mr. Toscanini's performances used to be slightly slower.
