No kidding! I've always thought the same thing.....seems like Quentin Tarantino, or Martin Scorsese, needs to put him in his soundtrack or something to get him back on the map unfortunately
He's not underrated, he's exactly where he belongs in music history. Matthew chose to make 90% of his music lightweight love songs, so it's his own fault that he's been largely forgotten about, and I'm saying that as a fan of his. It's a shame, because when he chose to rock out, the results were always awesome.
One of the coolest movies ever made, Vanishing Point. Which this video is based on. Matthew Sweet, a 70 Dodge Challenger in Plum Crazy, back roads Americana and loud Rock N' Roll. Sweet.
When it comes to losing someone, the lyric, "And then you're ripped right out of the ground like a fucking root" describes it perfectly, for me. What a lyric. Wow, is all I can say!!
Matthew Sweet seems like such a cool guy. He has a lot of the same hobbies that I do, he appears to be a fan of old school anime, 70s rock, old American muscle cars and art. Would love to someday have brewski with him.
I don't think I would have ever gotten any sort of interest in Anime without Matthew Sweet. I remember about a year after I bought Girlfriend that I was amazed when the next CD turned out to have gotten it's name from a video game.
Great flick. Better than Easy Rider.... and '70 Challenger is the god of muscle cars. Well... maybe after Javelin AMX. Great song. Great video. Great car.
Gotta love that LUM keychain hahaha. When I interviewed Matt way back in 2012, I asked him about his anime obsession and he said that it was rough being a fan back then, due to lack of resources to watch it. He's since said he's kinda hung up his otaku hat, but I told him to give FLCL a chance.
dont wanna be nitpicky but im pretty sure this song is actually "ugly truth rock" at least on my copy of the album when i had cds there were two versions of it. thenugly truth was actually a slower more country-fied version. love his stuff tho. blue sky on mars is still one of my favorite records.
YES....in my opinion the acoustic version on side one is preferable to me. Especially the violin solo at the end. And 💯% with you on Blue Sky On Mars....that is my favorite album by Sweet. Even though it only clocks in at 36 minutes in length. In Reverse sort of depressed me. Perhaps because I turned 31 that year, and I could feel the vestiges of my youth slipping away....the lyrics on Millennium Blues coincided to how I felt at the time. Thank you for your comment!
I love me some Sweet, but as far as the video goes I'm getting crazy similarities to Jellyfish's Ghost at Number One. Funny they both came out the same year.
+Justin Bradford It's based almost 100% on the film "Vanishing Point". The Jellyfish one isn't, it's just them with a car in the desert. So the similarities are surface and coincidental, not intentional. Though I'm sure MS likes Jellyfish and vice versa.
+Justin Bradford Oh you must! It's a classic of 1970s underground cinema, about identity and culture, living on the outside of everything. It has influenced so much art and music since it was released. Check the Primal Scream album "Vanishing Point", the whole thing is themed around that movie!
Sweet has to be one of the most underrated artists ever. I just don't understand why.

Nor do I. I grew up in Atlanta...hot venue for everything out of Athens. Michael Stipe told him to get out of Nebraska...and there you have...

Mopar and guitar rock!
What an album!
Love the whole album
Ugly truth is truth but good now. In Jesus Christs name we pray amen.
Altered Beast is far and away his best album.
Robert Quine on guitar. Amazing.
Amazing song. Raw lyrics and raw guitar.
Love the "Vanishing Point" reference.
Yep. As the comment below say, raw, but raw fricin' smart. Sht. The video is a gas. See my comments above.

Do you have a link to the interview?
Los 2 grandes misterios de los 90s, que había en la maleta de Pulp Fiction y en el portaequipajes del Challenger de Matthew Sweet
Please give this great clip a 4K upgrade!
Cool car! Go Matthew! Blue skies and green lights.
かっこいい
LOL this song reached #3 on the alternative chart and it only has 7,960 views?

Cool car in the video!
What a great video
💜🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👊
Merry Ray and the Bar King Spiders used to rip this.
Was there a non-MADE IN THE U.S.A guitar in the trunk of the car at the end?

Just saw you on Space Ghost
hey my name is matthew to!
Wonder if there is a Tom petty collab we never did hear. In Jesus Christs name we pray amen.
Shout out to Barry Newman
That's his challenger
What kind of envelope filter was Robert Quine using on the lead guitar here?
I preferred Altered Beast, over the first album. Matthew's guitarist had a loose, frenetic style that I really liked.

Cheers for the clarification dude! Good to know. Haven't seen that film yet!

+Justin Bradford Here's the "Vanishing Point" trailer. Also worth noting, Matthew Sweet directed the "Ugly Truth" video clip himself. Pretty cool.
Aw, c'mon! What's in the trunk!?

I thinke there's just an electric guitar haha
