Devastating Floods Ravage Swiss Alps, Cut Off Popular Resort Town of Zermatt. Heavy rains and rapid snowmelt wreaked havoc across the European Alps in June 2024, causing widespread flooding and landslides. One of the hardest-hit regions was the iconic Swiss resort town of Zermatt, nestled in the shadow of the Matterhorn. Torrential downpours throughout June, coupled with melting snowpack, resulted in the Mattervispa River overflowing its banks. The raging water surged through the town center, inundating streets and buildings. Frightening videos circulating online showed the river's fury, with floodwaters carrying debris and threatening the town's infrastructure. The flooding caused significant damage to Zermatt. Homes and businesses were left submerged, with mud and debris littering the streets. Transportation links were severed, as the only road and railway lines connecting Zermatt to the outside world were closed due to flooding and landslide risks. This left tourists stranded and disrupted vital supply chains. The flooding in Zermatt was just one piece of a larger picture of devastation across the European Alps. Many other regions also experienced flooding and landslides, highlighting the vulnerability of these mountainous areas to extreme weather events.
