Mack at a game convention... fucking hell if I wouldn't pay money to see that. I likely will, in fact! Now, it's perfectly obvious that most "Triple A" developers have no freedom whatsoever, so any criticism of game design choices will probably get you nowhere (if not blacklisted). That being said, I'd say asking questions about "will there be a fov slider/mouse smoothing/controls fully rebindable/unlocked framerate" - these are the kind of questions have the potential to make a developer red-faced down the road when they say one thing and then shit out another garbage port come release day.
Of course, just being Mack is also good enough for me. I'm sick to death of the modern gaming circus, and now that even fucking graphics hardly seem to matter, well... I TRULY have seen it all before.
Don't worry, I will be compiling a load of question from my subscribers before I go and I will be sure to ask them all
you would get banned but it would be funny to see the developers reactions

Steam stopped caring about their store a long time ago. Games like this are just business as usual now. It used to be a decent store, with some kind of quality standard, now it's a backalley pawnshop. Every other industry has a quality standard now - except Steam. If you order anything online, or go into a store like Walmart, they won't sell you broken products, or they have to take it back. They won't sell you garbage from their dumpster outside either. But Steam is like, "Whatever it is, we don't care. Slip us 5$, and we'll front page it on our store. Just make the store page looks good, and that's all that matters." They don't care one bit if it's a broken pile of shit. People praise the refund system as a solution, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still on the store being sold for money. And Steam only did this to cover its ass; not because they care about you.
They'll soon have to cover their asses again with the gambling, which is running rampant now on Steam and gambling sites. To bypass the legal age restriction of gambling, people have started using in game crates, skins, keys, etc, which do not legally count as "gambling", even though you can easily sell them for actual money. It's no different than gambling for casino chips, which you then cash in. This legal loophole is being exploited and Steam is at the root of it, building the system and allowing its use by third parties. It'll be another class action lawsuit against Valve for ignoring a problem they created and allowing it to spiral out of control.

I would rather have terrible games on Steam where the onus is on me to research before buying than have them arbitrarily blocking games based on them not being a "good game" which is a completely subjective and undefinable term. They changed their refund policy to accommodate shit games like this, and I think that's plenty fair and all they need to do.

I would still rather have a wide market where I need to be cautious than a controlled market where someone else is making decisions for me. Personal preference I guess.

In this case I really see some kids having fun in developing "games" even though they are not good at it. They would be much better off just releasing their products for free on itch.io or somewhere alike. Not their fault though, as Steam gives this opportunity to them. So I think something like a "originality rule" (= no simple asset flip games for example) would benefit Steam's reputation greatly.
I honestly agree. It's not like anybody will ever see this outside of those who browse the new section of Steam and the only people buying it are memelords and kids who find it funny. I mainly hear about games on other websites, so no matter how much shit floods steam it doesn't really matter for me. The only people that shitty games on steam affect are people who browse the new section, and who the hell would actually do that?

so mack, those kids made a game for a class in college. Their assignment was to make a game and get it released on steam. It was for a 3rd semester game design course. No money was made. All proceeds went to a charity of their choosing. I am in their class. I don't usually see pricks giving money to charity. Maybe things are different in the UK...

This game is fucking beautiful! This is how you make a great troll game, perfect for giving to friends, telling them with a sincere tone of voice how fun the game is, then watching them cringe in agony.
This is what happens when you tell every kid that they're 'special' and 'can do anything'.
Pretty sure this is just a couple of smart kids who saw an easy way to make a couple thousand with minimal effort after seeing the other shit that got through on kickstarter.
These 'smart' kids currently have another half-dozen equally shitty games available to vote for on Greenlight. Once is forgivable... any more than that is just taking the piss.

Love your work, just one thing to note:
I totally agree with not giving developers a softball when interviewing them. However, I am concerned they'll attempt to get you banned from the event.
Either not even attempting to hide it, and just getting 2 or 3 people to say "Yeah, he has a negative attitude. Life-time ban him or we walk."
Or, they give you so much BS when replying, that it winds you up (possibly them doing that intentionally for the next bit), and claim you being a little miffed is on par with how angry you get behind the camera (which would make anyone even angrier, etc, etc).
Point is: They don't play fair. A simple Q & A might terrify them into blackballing you so you can't get to any event.
Falling shy of hidden camera interview, I have no idea how to counter it though. I hate to recommend shit like this, but bring some friends with you to the interview. One man they won't give a fuck about. 3 people (even though you intend no harm) and they begin to brick it.
Best of luck! Try your best to control the environment you interview them in.
I would love to see Mack go to some of these conventions and put some of these triple A developers on the spot. It truly is a shame that this is the path the gaming industry took.

Mack, I am continuously amazed and appreciative that making video games has become as "easy" as it is today. I used to dream of the day that video games were so "simple" to create and today I look forward to the future where VR and augmented reality are as accessible as video games today so that everyone has an equal playing field to keep the ball rolling, to raise the bar, and maybe even to innovate.
That said, my gripe is with consumers. The gaming industry is flooded with so much dogshit because of the lowest barrier to entry ever seen, but the rewards for it are coming from the consumers willing to pay so much for it. Kids are growing up today in an atmosphere where everyone is asking for a "donation" or a "sub", to pay outrageous prices for AAA titles, and to keep paying to play the games. And, people with too much disposable income are setting the bar so high as to make it seem like throwing away your money is to everyone's benefit. And the young/naive see it and they think it's fine.. it's normal. I can't fucking stand that full/over priced games have in-game transactions for things I want but recognize as a cash-grab (looking at you skins, in-game currency purchases and random loot crates). Never mind day-one DLC. Never mind season passes. Never mind annual map packs released as a new game. Never mind subscriptions with expansion prices that rival full release games.
But, I digress. Let these kids make their project. Let them explore software development and be praised for it. And criticize their work and their price as you would any other but I'd hesitate to call them pricks. Their intentions aren't clear, and if I were them I'd probably charge a bit for it too. If everyone is willing to throw their money away, as is the current norm, might as well throw a bit my way too.

I don't disagree but With the division for example they get forced to make whatever the publisher tells them to make and the publishers are only interested in making shareholders happy. The developers I have heard from ex big companies like Bungie and 343i don't agree with Microsoft or Activision but they have no control over the IP.

sadly with the asking devs hard questions the answer will mostly be the same, "if we don't put in the BS then people ask for it and say they won't buy our game" followed by an off the record "marketing and the publishers are also influencing us to make it as much like Call of Duty as possible". the people handing out the money for these things have no spine, no artistic credibility and no plans for the future beyond "exploit people right now then think of something new if there is too much of a negative response down the line"

Shit like this is making game development really hard for actual developers. Also I can confirm that based on the video footage, this is actually a game that was put together using Unity in an afternoon. All the assets, code, etc is just import.
Greenlight absolutely needs professionally paid curators. Valve has more than enough money.
But please remember that not everyone on greenlight are filthy asset flippers like these guys, always be sure to properly research the games on greenlight before voting.
If they actually sold several thousand copies of this, without a 99% steam refund rate, I would be fucking enraged. That's impossible, right?
