What is the Hardest Run Possible in Oxygen Not Included?

- Notes due to very helpful and relevant comments:
I will not be using mods in this playthrough, just to reduce risk of being unable to play/record if updates cause any issues, and because I want to be able to share the seeds + maps with other people if they want to check it out without requiring them to use mods. If we want to be more accurate, I guess this would be "what's the hardest run without using mods?" because you could use all kinds of mods that would make it virtually impossible :D

😅
Himself
The dedication and time spent finding what is truly the worst asteroid/settings is WILD
I even question myself if this is possible. And yeah, incredible wife for all the commitment
@@cristianohentges8467 honestly, i don't think it is. 300 cycles + twice the calorie intake req. I just don't see it happening. There is no way there is that much food present in just the start biome even for just 3 dupes. We're talking 750k calories. That's insane, without some really exploity stuff to reduce that. maybe starving them, then feeding them last minute?
"Your duplicant get an extra 20% stress per cycle just for existing"
I couldn't relate more
Me playing ONI on easy difficulty: “wow this game has a lot of mechanics and it is quite challenging!”
Me seeing you set this scenario up: “Dear God, what hellspawn walks this earth that would want to do this”
On god, I am struggling just normally yet this man is doing a pretty much impossible run
10:43 - FYI, ‘this big number’ is 2³¹-1, the largest number which can be stored in a signed 32-bit integer.
I believe you meant 2^32-1 because there is a HUGE difference between 2^31 and 2^32. Computers can only operate within the 2^n model, so 2^31 is not possible, unless it is a hard coded limitation for some reason, and even then a mod could correct that.
@@oceanbytez847, no, I meant 2³¹-1. A *signed* integer needs one bit to indicate sign. That’s why the range of a signed 32-bit integer is from -2³¹ to 2³¹-1 (assuming the de facto standard of 2s complement).
This seems pretty cool! Your wife is so lovely, thanks to her for being willing to help you out! I've never beaten a single run but here i am wanting to do this challenge with early-mid game knowledge
You're right, she is lovely!
Great, now add Diseases Restored, Decor Reimagined, and Darkness Not Excluded
Edit: also add Research Requirements, which requires you to use buildings that you've recently unlocked to unlock the next part of the research tree. And about the disabling teleporters issue: enable teleporters, but don't let any duplicants use it until you've reached the asteroid with a rocket and dug far enough into it to reach the teleporter manually first.
This comment needs more likes and these need to be added. This is going to be horror
Hmmm, I am strongly considering this, but it does make me nervous to use mods while doing series' like this, in the event that people want to play along (they will also need to download the mods and it creates a barrier to entry), and updates frequently will cause issues with mods and I don't want to get stuck and be unable to play.
Let's conquer this run first, and we'll see about making it harder ;)
@@Magnet_MD that makes sense. You can always try staying on the previous branch if you want to play mods for longer before you update the game, and it'll also give them more time to update themselves.
@@Magnet_MD makes sense from a player / creator point of view too. A too steep of a difficulty jump can seriously stall or cancel the series entirely, so it's better to kick things up one notch at a time rather than going straight to the absolute hardest mode possible with mods. Easier to learn the tricks you'll need to survive at higher and higher difficulties, plus more videos is always a pleasant bonus.
Kinda like how a brand new player will probably start out on no sweat mode, then to survival, then to hard mode, as thier game knowledge grows, rather than starting straight with hard mode.
@@Magnet_MD. Just desease restored, I like it because you cant ignore some features of the game.
One detail about Carnivore: You can actually complete it on cycle 100, despite what it says.
Fortunate thing about Oassise asteroid, is pips are a good sustainable source of food, the hard part is getting enough up and running to do the achievement in time, without the use of hatches.
This was one of the best play through setup videos that I've seen. Appreciate the thoroughness and depth (and graphic design). Looking forward to this run.
The Carnivore achievement is probably going to make or break early runs.
With dupes requiring double the food, it just means starting ranching right away, and then hiring enough dupes in time.
I am afraid of you
I love the editing here! I can tell a lot of effort is put in to these videos, keep up the good work!
Thank you!
FYI: You can move the traits files inside the game folder into a different folder. If you do, it will not be able to roll those traits.
They are in the "Streaming Assets" Under "World Gen" in your game folder. Just moving them to a new folder you make works great and allows for spam rerolling for the terrible or best traits.
I know you already found your dream (or nightmare) seed but in case you wanted to do this again, or anyone else wanted to they can use this method also.
Excited for the series! Love your stuff!
Good tip! If I'm doing more wild stuff, I'll need to take this into consideration :)
You're the true oni engineer lol
@@Magnet_MD In fact, there is whole world of possibilities that modification of the game file allows you to do. By changing the map generator's configuration files you can exclude certain biomes for a given map type, or change the map size, or even create worlds without geysers and volcanoes, whatever. I had a lot of fun with it back in the day.
LETS GOOO this is what ive been looking for, you are amazing
Dude, That is going to be one heck of an adventure!! If anyone can do it would be you. Looking forward to it. And i wish you lots of good luck
Sir, you scare me.
hey google what is the definition of masochism? and why is it this video linked to the answer lol looks like a fun playthrough tbh GL
I usually like to follow along with your play throughs but I think I will sit this one out and just watch :-) Very good episode for explaining your seed selection.
This is great stuff. Looking forward to dive into your playthrough.
Thank you for doing this. I’ve waited patiently for your next oni YT video. In the mean time, I’ve honed my technique.
Really looking forward to watch this series. Just the dedication to search the hardest seed is awesome!
subscribed, excited to follow your progress on this high difficulty run
Great Video, really love your editing!
This is awesome. Looking forward to seeing how you go.
This is the play through I’ve been looking for, for years!
I just randomly clicked this video. I am so happy I did and I am super stoked for this series! Insta-subbed!
Same for me!
You earned my sub. Looking forward to watch this
Goodluck! Can't wait to see how it goes.
you changed your wife's head scarf in every shot 🥺💕 cute detail
Good luck on your challenge! I fully support you! Also I love your montage! :D
I enjoy your videos sooo much! I just wish I knew more physics or at least if I`d easily understand how to how, cause the game is so fun. Thank you for your videos!
That’s a lot of time dedicated to finding a good seed. I love that you and your wife worked together to try and crack the code. XD Now that’s true couple goals.
I'm a little over day 1400 on a radioactive asteroid, also doing an achievement run, and I gotta say it's been relatively chill (but I'm a long-time player and at some point most things are chill). Access to uranium and radiation from crashed satellites really helps with clean tech and exploration, and the main difference is priorities or the types of tech you go for. I never built a hydrogren rocket, for instance, because the radbolt engine is so overwhelmingly efficient given my setup. It's been super fun to think differently about how to progress the game when your resources are not just limited, but different altogether.
All this to say, looking forward to this series!
First time viewer, LOVED the visuals! Perfect time to catch this so I can subscribe to follow along as the series progresses!
You can work around maps and game settings using tricks. For a veteran, hardest map hardest settings is easy. Add in all-achievements and it becomes "doable with lota practice"
IMO, self-imposed restrictions are wayy harder because you cannot rely on the usual forum tricks. Glad you included it in a max-diff run! Would really follow this series through
Amazing dedication to research all of this, I’m super excited to watch this series, so glad I found such an awesome new channel for me to binge oni. I would suggest though, if you wanted to truly make this even harder, you should take every dupe from the pod, every time for a certain amount of cycles! Up to you though, good luck!
Wait never mind, the next episode is already up! I guess it’s too late for changes now, but I’m definitely going to go watch it now!
Suggestion: Even if it turns out to be completely impossible for whatever reason use the cycle counter as a high score indicator and restart the challenge. it would be interesting to see not just one run but how your thinking changes between runs and what the "meta" for such a challenge ends up becoming plus we would also get to see more of your journey as well.
Have subscribed as while I think this will be train wreck and well sometimes you just can't look away. Also I appreciate you dedication in finding the hardest seeds.
Will do! I do plan on doing at least a handful of attempts if I wind up losing, but I am very stubborn and will only give up if there's absolutely no way to improve.
I turned on notifications for this series, cant wait!
I thought this video was gonna be a cut off clips of you beating the game in hardmode but it turned out to be JUST picking the settings and finding the perfect seeds... can't wait to watch more of it
You, sir, are in my opinion the best creator of ONI videos. I have 600+h and after seeing your videos I stole a lot of your ideas. I was wondering why do you play only easiest asteroids though and now this series comes out. Your dedication to make hardest run even harder is just awesome. You, sir, are awesome. Thank you for your content.
You are too kind! Thank you!
Def interested in seeing you try to conquer that challenge. Good luck
This has to be a kink😊. Succes dude. Just remembering all the goals and restrictions is hard enough man. I hope youll succeed but will have some sweet popcorn at the ready for when the whole thing comes crashing down😉🍿
This sounds awesome,cant wait!
I would love a more uncut. I am so excited.
Hardest run ever. I wanna try this seed and I may miss going for carnivore. That seems kind of ludicrous combined with locavore.
But I will give this a try without your 300 cycle restriction! Love the concept and nicely done on actually achieving it!
Phew, I was worried you were gonna play without the DLC on. Excited to see how it goes
As someone who only has laymans knowledge about the game, I love this kind of theorycrafting and explanation, while attempting to find a very specific kind of challenge - good luck :)
I cannot wait for this to start!
my man. you are the youtuber bringed me to Oxygen Not Included
This is crazy and awesome at the same time
to help with the carnivore, Jer's simulation gaming has a interesting solution involving a single incubator and 2-3 ranchers on alternating schedules and a little automation. essentially setting up a errand on the incubator, locking the hugging dupe inside the room with the incubator, removing the egg once it's been hugged and incubate the next available egg swept to the room by a sweeper above while another sweeper in the incubator room moves the lullabied egg. to the room above which waits for that trait to wear off at which point you then 'sweep' the eggs to a bin set for sweep only that the upper sweeper, again, moves the non-trait egg back to the incubator room. i've made a few changes to this with an and gate, one or two dupe sensors, and a critter detector that help with automatically releasing the dupes. here's a quick video of an achievement run where I first found this idea.
You should be able to get the gist and make your own tweaks.
www.youtube.com/watch?czcams.com/video/6JmxLJZbyvE/video.htmlsi=IUrftD0cBNuz7VEt
Can't wait to watch your attempt at this!
have you ever tried a single dupe run?
I haven't tried a single dupe run, I don't think I'd have the patience for it tbh :D
@@Magnet_MD yeah, I gave up at around 360 cycles. I don't think it would make for very good content but I could be wrong. definitely not a live stream. Maybe a condensed edited series.
Isn't it better if you just build a lot of incubators and hook them to the time sensor, that activates only one incubator at time (dupe will hug it, power is saved and you dont have to remove the egg)?
@@czarnokoloroweIt's a trade between available resources and micromanagement. Without Lead from an Oil biome it's usually not worth the Refined Metal to spam Incubators in the early game.
@@dankirpan404 correct. That was the choice. How much ore I waste on a rock crusher vs the micro management for 20 or so eggs on 3x speed, it only takes about 2 minutes time IRL every other cycle or so. I think Jer’s record, from who I copied the idea, for getting carnivore was in the 50’s cycle range. But I could be wrong. My best is around the 80’s.
yeah, this really seems miserable and painful, gl on the challenge, guess you'll need it 💀💀
Gonna be exciting!
incredible slides!
Well, I'm really hyped!
yesss best oni cc coming back with a new series!!!!
Looking forward to this one
Love the dedication to bring a spouse into the madness!!
This is borderline insane
I'm excited for this.
Intresting one
Maby gonna give it a go
I realy enjoy early-mid game in ONI
That sounds fun
I'm super excited to watch this run. I always do max difficulty always and i agree that oasis on the base game map is by far the hardest of all maps. The extra restrictions you are adding though are insane. The only one I don't love is the 300 cycles to leave original biome. This might make things a bit boring as I'm looking forward to seeing your solutions to some thorny problems in other biomes. Good luck!
RIGHT!?!? like, i get what the goal is with the restriction, but its gonna be soooo boring
so excited to see this
great vid. when you talk about how you and your wife searching for a map seed...bro sweeeeeet boi right here
You a know a challenge run is going to be it when the first episode is just explaining the challenge
No idea what the run is about iust yet, but I see ONI challenge named ULTRA SUPREME HARDEST DIFFICULTY or some such, you bet your ass I'm here to witness it! Hype :D
Thank you algorithms on CZcams ❤
Now i want to try it myself with some mods, but maybe full spaced out run. Of course with some mods someone posted here. Vanilla game looks like there are no germs so i newer went through medicine stuff...
I disliked the base game so I never got to experience late game, despite how much I wanted to, so this is a really fun thing to see. Great concept btw and I really appreciate the effort you put into unraveling the difficulty parameters.
Quick note, if you have the DLC lumber can be an excellent oxygen source as the polluted oxygen derived from distilling into ethanol can be fed into sublimation stations for a lot of oxygen. I ran my colony on Oasisse that way and basically had no trouble with o2 with an additional open air electrolyzer. You could even use the ethanol later once you finish Super Sustainable for power! Decontamination for Deoderizers is also like one tech away from Insulated Tiles which is helpful. And don't power your incubators 24/7; it's a waste of power. Set up a cycle sensor so your dupes can lullaby them and when unpowered they keep the boost.
i too take 20% moral bonus for existing
I'm pretty excited for this, although I'm also sad its not going to be on flipped, that astroid is a menace. I have a flipped colony around cycle 150 that I got carnivore and locavor (and working towards super sustainable) but not having any water supply is a nightmare
Hunger set to "Fasting" (half of default) instead of max might make the run harder overall due to Carnivore. Since then you need either more dupes or a way to persuade them to eat more (stressing Bingeeaters) to consume enough meat.
Exciting! Let's gooooo
I'm so pumped for this ! I did a similar challenge with no interest dupe that have all negative trait (except the "can't do task" ones) and the first attempt they all suffocate on natural gaz xD anemic + any other debuff on athletism is the real killer.
What's your stance on flower pot trick ? It does not invalidate locavore but i guess it's reducing the challenge too much.
I won't use anything that'll short-circuit the difficulty, so I won't be using that. There are definitely ways you could make it totally impossible, but we're gonna find a line that is a challenge and also fun :)
awesome content
How were you able to get toolsnotincluded running? I tried on the way back machine as well but it won't work. I am using it on spaced out though
I think i did this map years ago, it was fulfilling, never finished it until 100% got bored after finishing the super sustainable achievement :)
Back in the days, there was a debate whether Oasisse or The Badland was more difficult. Oasisse makes you run against time to thermally seal your crops, but it has both reed fiber and golden amalgam, so you can have dups in suits and AT/ST (knowing what you're doing) relatively soon. Basicly you can diagonally dig to create vacuum pockets all around the base even before researching insulated tiles. Once you solve that problem, it's quite a standard planet.
The Badlands is not as hot, but no fiber no golden amalgam makes is hard to explore or setup AT/ST as you need to get steel. You also need steel for your SPOM. So you're stuck in a way, you need suits to get to the oil biome, you need to get to the oil biome to get fossil and produce steel, random egg shells don't do because you're likely to need a lot of steel. On top of that, Oasisse has aluminum, pips, arbor trees. Eg. you can enclose some pips in a natural cavity with a couple of wild arbor trees, and you get free eggs basicly once you get a rancher skilled.
ONI:SO adds stuff that may change the balance tho. Eg. divergent critters and grub grub fruits are a game changer.
The relatable Moment when you spend more time with the seed reroll, then actual playing
Lets goooo!!! Yo, post the world seed so i can try and play along with you!
Will do, it's on the way now!
@@Magnet_MD were gonna die 😂😂 so i wanna try and follow the challenge like youre doing, when the timer runs out and the pod lights up, do you have to select a dupe or do you have the option to not take a dupe and reject all? I think itd be nuts if you HAD to take a dupe and couldnt refuse one, although if that were the case youd surely die before cycle 300 lol youd have 100 dupes by cycle 300, and without leaving the starting biome by then youd be toast, thered be no way. Especially whilst also trying to get the carnivore achievement.
Excellent!
needing more food is actually a benefit when it comes to the herbivore and carnivore achievements =P
tools not included will come back eventually btw!
That's a relief!
Great challenge. I think it's doable up until the 300 cycle imposition... Extra layer of difficulty: can't pause the game while on the pc (while building, planning, etc.) 😂
this will be good
Oh yay, suffering! Good luck!
It's pure torture. Waiting for the first episode
I think Alternate pod location will not do what you expect.
it'll make you build a starter base on a side then by the time you reach the center it's free to build something more permanent without worries of destroying what you had.
if you are on teh center, yes you can reach resources in all directions but the desert is also in all directions, there's wall all around it anyway and there will be less resources at each side.
but to be REALLY real about it. you can loop through the map so unless you're like more up or more down it makes no difference.
I never thought I would BOTH, like and Sub on a video in which the youtuber is obviously insane and loves painful gameplay lol good luck
from what I've heard, oasisse is the dream map for doing Carnivore on because the giant desert biome is full of buried hatches that you can dig up and eat, skipping ranching entirely
ah, if you can't leave the starting biome then I guess that's not a factor
Good luck man. All I can say. Frequent walks, a Xanax or two a day and maybe a pet to pet.
Oasses is still my fav asteroid due to it causes you to live in an odd shaped starting base. no nice and easy lay out for to MAKE IT WORK. and I love it
Yikes! Now this'll be fun, for us anyway 😅
No way, hi Biffa! Glad to see you here watching oni!
I think it's gonna be fun... isn't pain fun?
I don't know if you knew or not, but there is a mod that allows you to change everything for your asteroid seeds. Basically gives you direct control of traits, meteors and such.
I searched this at the perfect time I was actually looking to do a a challenging run with a few mods including baator
Oh.... My....... God.... Respect man
rly curious, picked up ony 4 days ago again. in your seed i maybe would survive 50 cycles without archievments :D
If you turn it into a walkthrough series, I'm sure it's gonna be one of the easiest ;3
Hey @Magnet_MD i have a question thats a bit unrelated to this video but i need some help. In episode 20 of your base game walkthrough of oni you tamed a metal volcano. I have a couple questions:
1. Can i use cold salt geyser for cool water area and pump out heated brine and pump in cool brine instead of using polluted water and an aquatuner?
2. Can i use metal tiles only for tiles that touch the steam turbine to save metal?
3. If im not gonna use aquatuner than the system is gonna be power positive, what settings should my smart battery be? Should i use steam power before natural gas generators?
4. Is there any way to automate when i should send more clean water to volcano room for steam or should i do it manually?
Thanks.
What you can do is pump the brine into the volcano steam room right above the volcano- using a thermosensor to only dump in brine when the room is hot enough to flash it into steam and salt. Just make sure the steam room already has some water in there before sealing it up to make steam for the thermosenesor to read. The auto sweeper should be able to pick up the salt and metal.
You can then make power via the steam turbines and output hot 95C water, using an atmosensor to prevent creating a vacuum in the steam room. you can cool it by running the output next to the input brine, using metal tiles to transfer heat between the two, preheating the brine, and cooling the output water.
In this setup, you're getting metal, water, and power for free. Additionally, as long as you prevent the steam room from going above 300C, you can dump in polluted water to clean that into clean water and dirt. Be aware that if the dirt gets above 320 ish, it'll turn into a sand tile, clogging the works, so you must stop putting polluted water in if the temp is too high.
The steam turbines should be on an AND gate, with an atmosensor in the steam room set to above 1000g and a smart battery. I generally set these steam turbines at 90-95, as it's free power from heat I'm deleting and I'm relying on the water output, I want to use this power source above all else. Sometimes I'll even forget the smart battery and just hook it up directly into the spine, letting it run as long as the steam pressure in the steam room is above 1kg. As my primary goal here is to purify the water and cool the metal, the power is just a fun happy byproduct. So I'm OK if some of it gets wasted.
It's possible, depending on how many steam turbines you use, to keep the steam room at around 130C. This will barely run the steam turbines, but will allow you to use the output water to "cool" the steam turbines enough to keep them below 100c, eliminating the need for an aquatuner. The power output would be... meh, and you'll have to build a couple of extra steam turbines, but it would be power positive
Using a volcano as a water purifier is one of my favorite ways to use them.
1. yes you can, just check the temps when it freezes / boils
2. also yes, try it out and see how well it performs.
3. if u dont use an aquatuner, how are you cooling it down? if you use random water from the seed, it works for a while but not for a "set and forget" setup.
4. yes, you can either do a presure sensor , since it turns into steam - and i assume you wanna use it to power the base and use the water for sth else? -> either put the steam back into the system to have a closed loop. or just pump it out, and add new salt water with a pressure / temp sensor into the system.
@@Mr.Sparks.173I am a new player and have never tamed a volcano before and the iron volcano that i am trying to tame will output 2900C molten iron so i dont really know the temprature the room and steam will be. Will the salt from the brine melt and clog up the volcano room before the auto sweeepers can pick it up?
Wont the steam turbines be cooled by the -10C Brine from my cold salt slush geyser in the cold water area anyway? why would i need the output water and aquatuner to cool them?
@@Bastyyyyyy i was thinking pumping new -10C brine from my cold salt slush geyser would be enough to cool it. Is that not the case?
@@user-yu9eb6wg5f good question, im more of a early / mid game player and i never rly tamed a vulcano myself :) even after 2000hours ^^
You answered it kinda yourself. maybe the salt will melt and cause another problem. But it can work to cool it down, 100%. You just have to do it a bit differently then in his video.
I just wouldnt use nice ice cold water for such a thing, i would use the Aquatuner for it, and cool down the metal just so it gets hard and then move it out of the room and cool it down further on a nice chilled spot.
But thats the magic of ONI, everyone can do it how they think it works best for them :p
oh nah, a whole video dedicated to nothing but setup? this is gonna be good.
I loved playing on desert asteroid, tho it was easier than i thought, because i had cold slush geyser right outside my base. Still so much difficulty potential
