    I’ve been on Goodreads for years and you’ve shown me things I didn’t know I could do ... thanks . Love your videos 🥰

    Thank you for this video! I’ve made a separate shelf on GR for each of the 2 libraries I go to. When I see a book I’m interested in, I put it on my ‘Want to read’ shelf, I use it as a ‘temporary shelf’. Every few weeks, I go through it and sort the books onto 1 of 3 other shelfs: I look up the books on my library’s website and put them on the library shelf if they have it, if not, I put it on my ‘Want to read not available’ shelf, those are the books I light buy later. This helps me a lot if I need some inspiration while browsing the shelves in my library 🙂

      That's a great idea! I always find myself just wondering aimlessly in the library if I don't already know what I'm looking for. That's handy to have a list ready to go.

    OMG, your Goodreads is so clean and simple. Mine is insane. I have over 3,000 books listed and about 20 different personal shelves to organize them all. I kind of wish mine was more minimal like yours!

    Thank you so much for taking time to make this video...I have learned so much about using the good reads features and I will now be able to get much more organized and get more use out of good reads!! So thank you again!!

    I created a next in series shelf which became super helpful for keeping track of my ongoing series :)

    This was awesome! I didn't realize that I could customize my shelves and I plan on doing this in the near future. I would like half stars as well but I am fine with the way it is now.

      Yes, I wish there were half stars, but not enough to contact them about it, lol! It's fine. I'm glad it was helpful.

    • @SarahsNightstand

      Yes, it can be time-consuming. I would break it down into categories and work on one category at a time. That way it's not too overwhelming.

    When you are talking about the 3 main shelves I see my 2 book updates on your page!! Lol. I'm Tasha and have Conjure Women and The House on the Cerulean Sea as currently reading. That was FUN to see! 🤣 Although I ended up not going finishing Cerulean Sea (not for me) but I'm still reading and enjoying Conjure Women.

    I love Goodreads. I only have two extra shelves. Most of my organization comes through the use of tags, because a book can have multiple tags. I have a tag for the genre, since I like historical fiction I have tags for the era book is set, Like WWII, Civil War or the 1920s

    I really,really need to organize my books on my Goodreads shelf!! All I do is when I get a daily e-mail from people I'm friends with on Goodreads (like you!) is if I want to read that book, I click the "want to read" bar and that's it! I will occasionally find a book on my own that I want to read and I'll add it to that HUGE list!!! I also do use Goodreads for my reading challenges every year, and I do watch my friends challenges as well. Thank you for doing this video, as I know I'll refer back to it when I figure out how to categorize all of my books!!😊

      I just joined Storygraph and am looking forward to getting to know it, but I expect I'll keep using Goodreads as well. I also use BookCrossing. The three sites focus on different aspects of the bookish experience, so I just need to learn how to balance that somehow.

  • @jamiecoutu
    @jamiecoutu Před 3 lety

    Hey Sarah. I am definitely a Goodreads user, though I don't use it to its fullest potential. I've been on since 2016, I believe. Currently I just use it to track what I have read each year; so I have a shelf every year titled "Books Read in (enter year)." And that's about it. I've contemplated adding my owned and kindle books, but the thought of sitting down with hundreds of titles is daunting and I just haven't done it. My To-Read shelf is mainly stuff from giveaways, though I sometimes add a title here and there. Oh, I also have a shelf for the Great American Read list. I like the idea of the BOTM shelf, so I may have to go and add that.
    Have you added any titles you read before joining Goodreads? I have yearly reading logs dating back to 2006 that I have in a notebook. I'm not sure if it's worth creating a shelf of pre-Goodreads. Just a thought I was having recently.
    Thanks for sharing.

    • @SarahsNightstand
      @SarahsNightstand  Před 3 lety +1

      I have added random books from before I joined GoodReads if I notice that it says I haven't read them. But I haven't gone through and really added absolutely everything. If they pop up I'll add them and make sure there's no date for when I read them so it doesn't mess with my challenge numbers.

  • @emilyrogers3271
    @emilyrogers3271 Před 3 lety

    Very interesting. Tfs.

  • @skeletonkeybooks
    @skeletonkeybooks Před 3 lety

    A good reason to use the to-read shelf as a wish list is that when you sign up for a Goodreads giveaway, they automatically add it your to-read shelf. (And if you already added the hardcover edition to your to-read shelf then sign up for the paperback edition giveaway, you'll need to use the Find Duplicates feature to clean that up.)
    I have found that using the rating anchors provided by Goodreads are surprisingly helpful when I'm waffling. Did I *really* like the book? Or just *like* it? My gut is so much better at rating than my brain is.

    • @SarahsNightstand
      @SarahsNightstand  Před 3 lety

      Yes, I've had to go through and delete duplicates every so often. I also don't mind too much about the star ratings, it's fine. Not enough to contact them or mention it all the time.

  • @60sbaby70sgirl

  • @ericasalmans1783

    Loved the idea of a BOTM shelf, I'm adding that to my goodreads. Are you only adding physical BOTM books to the list? I have read/listened to Beach Read and Home Before Dark but didn't get them as BOTM copies. So I was curious how you would treat those types of situations.

    • @SarahsNightstand
      @SarahsNightstand  Před 3 lety

      Yes, I'm only adding physical books that I specifically order and receive from BOTM on that list. Since I subscribe, that's how I'm handling it.

    Right now my page is a mess, lol, so I need to clean it up. I'm getting ready to add a BOTM list, I joined in August. I'm wanting to add a "books I desperately want to read" since I enter contests, my want to read is seriously over loaded. May use a different adjective though, I need the right one. I do the Popsugar challenge challenge doi that's on there and other challenges that I'm needing to delete. This was a great video.

    • @SarahsNightstand
      @SarahsNightstand  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks! I'm low-key doing the Pop Sugar challenge this year as well. It's been more of "let's read and see if anything I read fits any of the challenges."

      @jenniferdobbs7092 Před 3 lety

      @@SarahsNightstand I agree with the challenge. I actually wrote down suggestions on the list I printed, but many of the picks isn't what I actually read. I've become a mood racer and go look ro see what it fits under. Have a great day.

    Thank you for this video. It was so helpful for me. I made a list for books that I listened to vs read. Can you write notes about a book after you read it that are private? Just notes to jog my memory or tell a friend about when describing but not for others to use? I'm not a good enough writer to have it published :).

    Hey, Sarah!!! I'm still new to Goodreads. I really want to be more active on my page and keep up with the books I read. How do I follow what other people are reading?

    • @SarahsNightstand
      @SarahsNightstand  Před 3 lety

      Hey! To follow other people I think you need to have their page links to either add them as a friend or follow them that way. You can also browse people's pages and reviews, but they will be random and very big reviewers that GoodReads will promote for you to follow. Once you add some friends and start following people, your feed will include people that they follow and comment on and you can click on them from there. It's a little difficult to get started but once you do, you'll get there. I would recommend looking at the description boxes of BookTubers you like and they should probably have their goodreads links included. I hope that helps!
