Two tracks from Yamaha DSR-2000 (1987)

  • The two tracks I composed on DSR-2000 in 1987, when I was 9 years old. Except the built in drum loops all the parts are played manually (and faultily:).
    It was a very practical keyboard, which can be considered as an early workstation with a simple to use sequencer and a sythesizer section. It was broken (literally) in 2002 when we were watching a football match at home and jumped from our sofa when we scored a goal. The seat went backwards pushing DSR-2000 to ground, whose keys were then blown to smithereens. Since then I couldn't find a time to buy another workstation synth but nowadays I am considering to buy a Roland Fantom G7 or G8. I won't place it on the back of the sofa. My other options were Korg M3 and Yamaha Motif but I found Roland the most appealing to my production habits which were formed by DSR-2000. I find working on PC uninspiring. I am open to any opinions. (One day I hope to buy an Eminent 310U also.)
    Thanks for watching and feel free to comment. You can make fun of the faults or sounds I won't resent it :) I was a child after all....

    I love my DRS2000. Great Keyboard. The Sequencer is excellent. I bought mine in 1992 and run it with my Yamaha PSR70 and Yamaha PSR36. It has been shorting out lately so I'm going to have to address that.

    This is incredible work for a 9-year-old. You started a couple years earlier than me! I still have my DX7 recordings from when I was 11-12 ;) Not nearly as good as this, mind you!

    Cool songs. Back when this keyboard was introduced, I had a PSR-31, but I had a magazine with an ad in it for this DSR-2000. I remember thinking how cool it would have been to have that instead, it would have been a nice upgrade from what I actually had.

    like any recorder, via midi conector (behind). SetClock Output on DSR, and registering device (or Cubase or equivalent) to midi clock Input. This will keep the rythm tempo. For the channels, make a multi channel recording. Only a few channels are used by the DSR(3 or 4 if i remember.) . Press record key on Cubase, and start playing the DSR from memiory. Stop all at the end and correct the score.

    This is believable bc the drums are presets with option to add fills, and the complicated bass lines are made by holding down a single key. That said, these are very enjoyable compositions with nice arrangements. Very impressive for a 9 year old. I bought this kb in 88 or so for under $300 I am sure. Still have it and get it out for occasional fun.

      Bass lines are mine, didn’t use the built in arpeggios in loops. Can tell from bad timing of notes :) Only the drum loops are factory presets. It was so easy to use. And the synth engine was punchy and fat compared to my current Fantom G8! Maybe because it was an FM synthesizer I’m not sure

    @sauermusicDE You are right I had to mention that. These tracks were recorded to tape cassette through Sony LBT-D905 hi-fi component system. It has a nice DSP deck with which I added the reverb effect then. (I am still using that hi-fi system) This also explains the noise in background.

      i mean it's not impossible if he started piano at 5, and had previous experience with an earlier cheapo mini keyboard like vl tone or portasound.
      it's certainly not expertly composed, but there's some knowledge of harmony here. plus the 80s were a different time, a lot less ADHD. a lot of kids had the patience to code games and music in assembly on commodore 64's and started whole careers.
      so maybe not as implausible as first thought.

    @bestrickie2 Reverb was produced with Sony LBT-D905 hi-fi system during recording to cassette tape. Unfortunately I cannot post more stuff because it's in keyboard heaven now (See video info above). It had plenty of classy fat sounds indeed. I'm looking for a used one now.

    I used a lot as midi controller keyboard. But It was difficult (or impossible, I can't remember well) to control the keyboard itself via midi using sequencers programs.

    @Ozkar1337 Unfortunately I didn't connect it to anything except my hi-fi system when I had the DSR-2000. I only created music with the on-board sequencer. But maybe someone who visits this video knows the answer.

    I wonder what this cost in 1987. If I could have got one of these for £300 in 1989 I would have bought it. Back then at that price you had to choose between Touch Sensitive Keys or a built in Drum Machine. Getting both cost about £500 well over £1000 in todays money.

    • @izlence
      @izlence  Před 8 lety

      +MrDuncl Thank you. I don't remember the price but it was similar to PSR-6300, my other option. The store owner insisted on this model because he tought it would be better for my creativity.

    Hey not a bad keyboard in it's time Yamaha DSR 2000 & I wondered if it had it's own built in reverb unit or if you put it via an efx unit. I've had loads of keyboards over the years but never had this one. Nice drum sounds on it & I think this model dates back to about 1988-89ish. Cheers & please up load more stuff from that good old synth.

    The DSR-2000 doesn't have internal reverb, but I can hear reverb in your tracks (especially from 2:55 to 3:06). So which effect unit did you use for the reverb?

  • @Electroshank
    @Electroshank Před 12 lety

    Doesn't sound like cassette tape (extremely clean sound) although I take your point that you were using a top-end hifi to record it, so maybe it was. If this was recorded to cassette tape then the DSR-2000 is polytimbral, because these are not multitrack recordings. However I am positive you sequenced these entire tracks (and used quantization to fix errors). Maybe using an onboard sequencer or external MIDI sequencer or computer.

    my brothers and sisters have touched the parameters of the DSR and the sound no longer resembles that of a classical piano. how to do ?
    Thanks a lot

    • @izlence
      @izlence  Před 5 lety

      I think you have to make a factory reset. DSR-2000 has several options for restoring factory settings. To reset all data, turn off the unit and while pressing 4 and 0 turn it on again. Beware, everything you created will be lost with this option. To reset only voices, press 1 and 0 while turning on. (2 and 0 restores accompaniments only, 3 and 0 restores sequencer data). I have the user manual in pdf, if you write your email I can send it.

      Thank you. I bought Roland Fantom G8, but I couldn't figure out how to improvise like I did on the DSR-2000. I mean arpeggiator logic in live play is totally different and no automatic rhythm playing like in DSR-2000. I couldn't set a bass and chords arpeggiating on the left side as I hit keys while I'm playing lead on the right. It seems like pads are the answer but I will have to program them I guess.
      It has a manual like 500 pages maybe I will find it someday.

      woaw one more who had problems with that. Roland fantom series has a automatic arpiego sequenser. mine i chose that with using SHIFT AND ARP buttons at same time havent work so much with mine i guess im one of them who gives up when its not going my way.
