- Grafting season is here. This graft was done August 2020 in Southern California Zone 10a / 10b. I grafted a 3 month old avocado tree in a 1 gallon container. The scion came from a mature, 7 year old Reed avocado tree.

I watched so many grafting videos, This is far the best detailed info. Best of all you’re showing the result after several weeks. Some people may not agree grafting with young tree in container but what not to agree if you have successful result.
Thank you for your kind words. Much appreciated! 🥑
This is a great video. I just moved to Florida and have been growing my first avocados trees from seed, but down the road if I get a chance to access a mature avocado tree, I will use this method. Thanks so much! Very detailed and easy to follow!
Thanks :)
Great to watch your video and confirm that I didn't rush it when I grafted onto 1-2-month-old seedlings. I even tried my hand by grafting two thinner scions into a single cleft of a 1-year-old seedling. Holding my breath on that one. One thing I would recommend is to use aluminum foil, shiny side out, around the scion to reflect any unwanted hard light. Might be useful to those of us who can't store the seedling-graft in total shade.
Best How-to I've seen for grafting an Avocado tree. Great job!
Big thanks. Much appreciated 🙏
I'm very impressed with your presentation. You're the only person I've seen on CZcams videos fat tell us what time of the year to do the grafting or budding when their carrying out they task Well done a congratulations for an excellent job
Thank you. Comments like yours inspire me to make more videos. Much appreciated.
J'ai coupé une petite branche, mise dans bouteille plastique, le temps que la première feuille apparaisse. Maintenant le plan est en terre.
Great video as usual. Thanks for immediate update on progress. I thought I had to wait a month for an update. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks again.
Thanks!
That’s a really nice graft! I did graft my seedling but I grafted to the side and it looks like a successful graft. Graft doesn’t look brown or dead.
Thanks! Good luck with your graft?
Hi AJ it’s great we’re learning from you. One thing I’d like to ad is, here in Greece when we can’t find shade we use brown paper bag.
That’s a good idea
Great videos, thank you. Looking forward to grafting some scion off my grafted mexicola grande avocado onto a couple of young hass seedlings. The hass grew out of a spot in the garden where I buried some food scraps which contained avocado seeds. Thanks again from a beginner in NZ.
Thanks. Good luck with your grafting 🌴🌳🌿
Hey man good to see you’re still doing what you love. I went to SD last December and thought about hitting you up. Would love to see your work in person sometime!
Sure next time stop by
This is the most clear video I have watched so far. Big up man
Thank you "Smiling Ajmal". I see you are a Palmeiras fan. I was the biggest fan of Brasil. Imagine, in 1982, when the greatest Brasil ever, lost in the semi final to the ugliest Italy ever, I didn't eat for two days. I couldn't believe what happened.
Getting educated from your videos and getting into grafting more on my seedlings. Thanks
Thanks. Much appreciated 🌴🌱🙂
Great video, so many grafting videos leave out bits of info like what time of year to do it, light requirements etc
Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I appreciate it
Crystal clear tutorial 👏🏽
Thank you. Much appreciated
Very clear description and showing of proper alignment !
Thank you!
Beautiful work my friend. Keep it up. Now I have seedling grafts in containers video to send people to lol. I get asked about this all the time. Cheers mate
Thank you my friend. Always a pleasure to hear from you. Hope everyone’s well out there. Be safe
This is very informative and helpful. thank you for sharing this.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching............
Great video! You really hit this video out of the ballpark. Nice job! I was really impressed with this video. Please keep these videos coming! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I really appreciate your support
What is the name of avocado 🥑 variety of your dp?
Very informative, thanks for sharing. I will definitely try out this method, I love it.
Thanks for the kind comment. Much appreciated.
You did good I have an idea now on what to do to my seedlings
Great Job Ajmal!!! Thank you For Sharing. I am very impressed....
Thank you! Your support is much appreciated
Enjoy all your avocado videos.
When are you having your scion-grafting party with social distancing of course.
That’s an interesting idea!
Thank you!
Thank you for the well simple demonstration.
You are welcome!
that looks so easy. thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for the update, so important
Thumbs up for Goodfellas and grafting!
Thanks!
Beautiful and very detailed. I love it. Question, how do the buds grow with the grafting tape covering them? Thanks in advance.
Thanks. The buds break through the tape
What is the time of avocado grafting and how much percentage will be successful?
@@AJTheGraftMan mml10
Very perfect and clean...
Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. In your video, it appears that you have 2 stems growing. Do you remove one or let them both grow?
Thank you. I let them both grow out. The more branches growing on a successful graft, the better
I love this.and going to try it bcoz my avocado I just planted is three weeks old
Great video, but where do I find Fruiting tree, I only have two seedlings :((( I have to wait for 10 years
Thanks. Depends where you live. If you live in an area where avocados can grow outdoors, there should be trees in the area
Try online
Go see sleepy lizard he sells scions check out his channel
If you have a friend or neighbor that has a good avocado tree. Cut a few scions from that.
Thank...I will trying
Great and necessary video, is there any additional infirmation on what to add to the soil (and what watering frequency) after grafting?
I feed and water my grafted and ungrafted avocado trees the same. After grafting, a little fertilizer could help boost the growth further
Beautifully presented, and well detailed! I’m ready to graft my avocado 🥑 tree. But mine is already planted in the ground. I live in California and now we are almost at the end of spring. Another Month and Summer will be here. Can I graft now or wait until next spring!?! I guess I could put a big patio umbrella ☂ over it to protect from the mid-day sun 🌞 What do you say!?!
Thanks! You can graft now. I’d give it some sun protection, especially if temps go above 90 regularly. The umbrella is a great idea. You can also graft avocado in September
simple, easy to follow and wonderful demonstration of avocado grafting i have seen so far. Nice Job! Can you provide the link for grafting tape and knife. Thanks.
Thank you 😀
Links are in the description
Lotta planes overhead! LAX? Do you have a video showing your soil mix for your pots? What's a good age to go from pot to ground? Excellent detail!
Thanks! Here’s the link to my soil video:
czcams.com/video/DmCz_IOwWgs/video.html
Age is not such a good indicator. Trunk thickness is more important. 1/2 inch to an inch trunk thickness is a good sign to go in the ground
@@AJTheGraftMan thank you , perfect! will do exactly that! Avo pit sprouting procedure too.
Wow I'm very impressed good job thank you
Thanks!
Will be doing a few of these today
Nice. Good luck
Thanks sir, you are a great teacher.
Nice video buds
Thanks for the great video! I’ve got a few store bought avocado seeds that are about a year old. Can you graft on to store bought avocado seeds? I don’t think the root stock is root resistant. Thanks!!
Yes you can! I’ve done it many times. Very few rootstocks are rot resistant. But if you plant in the right soil (decomposed granite, for example) then rot shouldn’t be an issue
This is so helpful
really awesome technic i like the way you explain and very well done you just earn a subscriber
Thank you. I appreciate your support 😀
Yes, you really have earned a subscriber and I'm grateful.
I’m glad I found this video. It’s very informative. I’ve had 2 avocado pits in water for a few months and the stems are finally growing. I’ll wait for the stems to grow bigger to try grafting them. I’m going to ask my neighbor for a couple of small branches from her huge avocado tree. Does it matter how old the tree is (where we are getting the branches)? Her tree must be at least 20 years old.
Age of the tree doesn’t matter. As long as you can find good leaf buds on the tree to graft with, it should be fine. I’ve posted some videos on how to find good scion wood on my channel. Good luck!
@@AJTheGraftMan Thank you. I’ll take a look at your other videos.
@@vm1982 Age of tree dosent matters, what if the tree is 7 months old?
The right way is to tape the scion from top of incersion to bottom to prevent that the scion is pressed out or moved. The buds will break through the perafilm.
Hi I live in Northern California and you said keep it in the shade for the first month because it to hot where you live right, so my question is what's to hot?
The average temp where I live is between 68 to 75 degree so do you think that I can keep mine on the sun or should I also put mine in shade like you did?
Super beautiful avocado tree
I would love some Scion for my indoor avocado
Hi
tell me please, what are the months in which we can graft the avocado? I just did one, but I don't know if it's the right time.
knowing that I am in Africa (Mediterranean climate)
sorry for my english, I use a translator.
In my experience, best time to graft is from August to October or from February to April
Thank you once again 😊
Hi there: Thanks for the useful clip. I have just grafted my first graft and the new buds are showing off beautifully. I hope to grow them in my backyard later. How long do I have to keep the younger leaves in shade before transferring them into the sunshine areas? Thank you from southern Thailand! Happy New Year!
Hi! Happy New Year! I would keep it in shade until the first growth of leaves fully mature. After that i would move it to the full sun. Good luck!
They say you should keep cutting the leaves as they grow to stimulate growing of the tree
I doubt that would work
Amazing
what's the point in putting it in the shade and not in the sun?
I did this graft in the summer, so the hot summer sun could have dried out the graft, so I put it in shade
My avocado tree is 3 years old I think. The leaves are brown crispy. The tree is under another tree for a little bid of shade. Any tips??
could be one of many things. You can email me pictures if you want
@@AJTheGraftMan whats your email? I cant find it. This will be my 6th avocado plant ive tried growing. The rest have died on me im lucky to have this one survive this long😏
You don't put a plastic bag over the scion and graft?
No need. The tape provides the same effect
Awesome thanks nicely done where can I get a scion I have a lot of young plants 🪴 but no avocado.
Please let me know
Thanks. Do you live in an area where avocado trees grow?
Thank you
Good job
Thank You for Sharing 🤠
Good
I stupidly didn't make sure the scion had buds on it -just leaves that I trimmed off. Will this still grow or should I start again? Thanks for the excellent video!
If there are no buds on the scion, I would not expect any growth from it. Might be a good idea to start again. Thanks for watching!
@@AJTheGraftMan Yeah I re-did them, you live and learn!
Great tutorial sir
I like it very much. Thanks for sharing
thanks for watching
Good job friend 👍
Very good job
So you grafted Reed onto another Reed ? I have grown a Reed from seed, it's about 3 feet high. would I need to cut the most of its growth off, then graft?
Yes and yes
Hi Ajmal. Is it because you are putting the plant in the shade that you don't cover it with a plastic bag??
Hi Allan. No need for a plastic bag because the grafting tape does the same thing
Great video, thanks for posting!
What soil mix you have in the pot, how is it amended while the graft is kept in the pot. I assume well train and lightly moist to the touch? Please describe the soil conditions while this graft grows in container.
Thanks! I’ve done a few soil mix videos. Check them out on my channel!
good Video keep up the good work thank you for sharing
It might sound stupid, but is there a way to graft a 4 feet avocado tree without cutting the top?
Yes certainly. You can do a veneer graft. Personally I don’t have much luck with this type of graft, but others do it with much success. There are lots of veneer graft videos on CZcams
The only problem with this method is the Palmeiras Jersey. Greetings from Brazil.
Kkkkkk obrigado
Great job my friend 👍👍👍
Thanks good knowledge shared what is the best time of the year for grafting
Nice detailed procedure 👍
😀😀😀PINOY GRAFTER 😀😀😀
Your video is amazing, I learned how to graft from your video mostly. I have questions. Is all the tape for grafts the same or not ? I watched some video they mentioned the graft could fail because of tape. Is it true?
Thanks!!! Much appreciated. Not all grafting tape is the same. Check the description of this video
Thank you for sharing
Thanks i will try my seedling from my friends avocado
Thank you for the video
Great!
When are you going to show us how to grow avocado trees from cuttings?
I’ll add it to the list
That aircraft was so load by the way 😬😂😂
I did try today but some die some it ok but the one it die can I try to graft again?
Yes you can try to graft it again
Hi, I have only 1 tree because my son experimented (successfully) with an Avocado seed. Should I/Can I graft it and how (considering that I don't have another tree to grab a branch from) ?
Very well explained..👌
Thanks!
That doesn't put plastic anymore? Why do others do? Hope I can had an answer on you bro.thank you.
Can u use long neck avocado tree , and graft on to a hess avocado tree stock base.
Yes you can. Good luck
Hi, I re-planted my avocado plant in a big wine barrel and kept it in full sun whole day, at first all leaves dried like chips. then new leaves came but they are also dying and again new leaves are coming. Is the plant getting too much wind because it is open area in the backyard and sometimes it is too windy. Should I move it to partial sun where there is less wind. It is 2ft tall tree. I added gypsum also after watching your video. When I bought the tree from nursery we could see the avocado seed which was very healthy but now it is shrinking. How much water should I give that plant?
I have hass seedlings that are 2 months old 18 inches tall the stem is very thin. Would topping them thicken the stem or what would you recommend?
Thanks alot man,im scared to graft my avocado plant and im scared that it might do something wrong
You can do it!
Nice video thank you.
Great videos and very useful info. When grafting a young seeding like this , how long do you wait till you declare an unsuccessful graft?
Thanks. I usually wait about 3 months
Nice. Question: If I have two types of Avocados, Tree1 and tree2, and I graft tree2 onto the tree1 potted with roots, What type of Avocados will the tree produce?... The reason Im asking is I am selling a house with an OLD MATURE avocado tree that produces HUGE AVOCAdos and I really want to have a tree like that one. I beleive is a REED Avocado. THANKS!
Thanks. The answer is the tree will produce avocados exactly like tree2. Good luck with your grafting
Hi Good job! Would like to purchase a seeding from you! Here in Puerto Rico! Maybe that Reed. Want to ask , just receive a wurtz all leave drop ,what can i do? Rootball was in loose in dirt. Thanks ! Be Safe!
Thanks! Sounds like the tree is stressed. I would add some more dirt, pack in the root ball with soil, then water well and keep in shade for a few weeks. Good luck
Been looking at u work great well done
Do buds are to be covered or not? @ 3:31 can not hear clearly
Yes buds are covered
Hi what time of the year to do the Kraft ing
