What can be done to combat rising misinformation on X?

  • Hatred, incitement and the rapid spread of misinformation: it's all kicking off on X, driven in part by its billionaire owner Elon Musk, who's depicting himself as a champion of free speech. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
And there seems to be no way to control what's being published.
Today - after the European Union reminded X of its legal obligation to tackle misinformation - in the wake of the UK's far right riots, Mr Musk responded with a meme quoting the F-word.
So what can be done to combat the rising misinformation on the platform that has occurred post-Southport?

4:44 'Two tier Kier', is NOT misinformation. It is a comic nickname working on the basis that some people belonging to one ethnic or social group or other claim to have had direct experience of being treated differently by the police in comparison to other ethnic or social groups, and that the Prime Minister is on the other end of it getting cases rushed through as quickly as possible and giving custodial sentences for such heinous crimes as sharing a comment 'Coming to your town soon' on Facebook. That is certain people's interpretation of certain experiences which any intelligent person can assess and come to their own understanding of. It seems quite an appropriate comic nickname for a prime minister who openly uses rushed court cases and sentencing to 'send a message' while not actually giving an actual strong and direct message about the causes and potential solutions for the widespread social unrest. 5:14 You do not even challenge a police spokesman who claims that the Two Tier Policing issue is 'irrelevant' when it is one of the principal reasons for people to be demonstrating - whether their perceived mistreatment by police is illusory or not - and for demonstrations turning into riots. And yet, your program continues to support the reassuring fiction that all of the disturbances in the UK are caused by bad apples writing nasty tweets, and that the UK would be enjoying a care free summer if it weren't for Elon Musk. It's pathetic! Do some proper investigating of what's going on, and stop repeating meaningless weasel words like 'far right' or 'misinformation'. These terms, referring to important concepts, are becoming unusable through overuse by unimaginative and lazy journalists to describe things not yet very well understood. Why don't you start actually finding out something about why people are claiming different treatment by the police? Why don't you try to show whether there is any truth to it, instead of toadying up to whoever is benefiting from your evasive, vague, non-descriptive and shoddy use of the term 'misinformation'?

Agreed. There should be a law that if a post on any social media platform from a known source of inflammatory and rascist lies is clicked by a UK IP address holder then the platform should be fined. If it continues, then UK ISPs should be instructed to block access to it. ISPs should also be required to keep records of the MAC addresses and locations of devices that are used to contact certain suspected content providers.

It's not a conspiracy or right wing to point out that we have a two tier society. This has been the case for many years. The evidence is plain to anyone with a brain. If you have a homeless crisis in your own citizens, with people living on the streets, yet people coming in will receive accommodation it is obvious that the long term residents are treated unfairly. You could say the same for foreign aid that often gets eaten up by large corporations and money for weapons for countries such as Ukraine. The UK has ample money for war it seems. We create these poor refugees then cram them in.
But as for COVID conspiracies I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the riots were about. Paid agitators in order to usher in laws to curtail free speech. After all asking for evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in 211 freedom of information requests still hasn't unearthed a single purified SARS-CoV-2 particle that's been proven to exist outside of a computer generated sequence derived from culture sample that control tests have proven create those cytopathic effects attributed to a virus as occurring without anything viral in origin ever being added.
