Love him or hate him, Larry Merchant was a legend and had enormous gravitas. He gave numerous memorable quotes over the years. And he didn't mince words. You have to respect that
Idontknow Iforget Sure he had that, but sometimes that isn’t a bad thing. He wasn’t a pandering interviewer tossing up softballs. He had a good balance in those post fight interviews. I liked him because he was old school and was not hyper filtered like every commentator these days. He reminds me of a Billy Packer, Dick Button, or Howard Cosell. Same vein
He's not dead, but he will be missed. I grew up with Larry doing commentary, and now decades later he is stepping aside, just like all great fighters do.
He brought a writer's mentality to his broadcasts and his interviews. He'd ask tough questions and he had a real journalist's pure skepticism. He wasnt some ex-athlete that they just plug in because he's a familiar face. He brought knowledge, experience, and professionalism to his craft.
merchant is the best, love when he stops big george from rambling,or the strong arm interview, listen to one of mayweathers flunkies, "u heard him" hilarious, merchant not affraid of anyone, classic
Larry merchant is a brave and real boxing commentator ,,,he said what ever is truth to a winning boxer ,,,,he's an icon and hall of famer as a boxing analyst,,,tnx to a great contributions in analyzing the boxing fight,,,God be with u Larry Merchant
When I think back to my earliest years of being a boxing fan I remember Marciano Ali Tyson and Merchant. Larry was as much to do with boxing as anybody. Enjoy you're retirement sir 👍🏻
Man I remember Larry’s commentaries on HBO. They were just off the chain. Nothing like it. And this dude really understood boxing. His commentaries were Creative colorful Entertaining and most importantly dead on point. And he is exactly right about boring Floyd.
Larry Merchant imo still holds the best line in sports history in the greatest upset in sports history when he said after Tyson lost to Douglas "This Makes Cinderella Look Like A Sad Story What Buster Douglas Has Done Here Tonight" LoOL what a line.
The way Larry stood up to the outspoken and charasmatic Floyd, wow!! No matter how badly Mayweather outclassed his opponents, Merchant wasn't scared. He was man that always said what was on his mind and didn't bite his tounge. You will always be remembered for that Larry, enjoy your retirement!
Larry the best.... I remember he said to macho Camacho getting his first millon dollar fight, "a fan went up to the promotor and said, dont tell me that wisel of Camacho is getting a million dollar for this fight, promotor turns around and tells the fan , that wisel sells tickets ... Camacho grab Larry by the neck playing around saying it Was you larry.... simply the best
not too many people have the balls to ask someone who just took a beat down, what happened? or can tell someone you just got ur ass kicked, alot harder than it looks, one of the best interviewers ever, doest throw softball questions like most garbage interviews we see
Fake? Larry was the realest one out there! It would have been easy for Larry to just go along with the script and call everyone the greatest in the world but when somebody needed to be checked he did it! And as a paying customer I loved him for it.
Boxing is dead to those who think Mayweather and Pacquiao are boxing, to the real hardcore fans who see pacquiao and mayweather as just elite among large group of fighters boxing is very well alive. so many good young fighters out there, ward, broner, canelo, gary russle, donaire, and the stacked 140 division. Boxing is never over my friend.
Well Mayweather said it best. And they got one thing right. It will be impossible to replace Larry Merchant. No One is that God-Damned-Dumb. On TV that is. NO ONE!!!!!
Say what you will love him or hate him. Merchant made you think. Isn't what it is all about? Different opinions coming as one. Whether we agree or disagree. Boxing is missing that I do not know if it will ever get that back.
He is a biased reporter, he also try to talk down Bernard Hopkins not only Floyd, the man maybe be brilliant but he is also a dick, the whole point of being a journalist & commentator is to be unbiased and a professional.
Why the hell do I not know this....I'm gonna kick myself when I find out the answer....but who is Larry interviewing from 3:51-4:01? I cannot for the life of me remember who that is. Does anyone know?
+blackelk7373 He didn't stand up to floyd mayweather, he only made himself look like an asshat. He personally hates Floyd as a person and totally dismissed all his highlights in that fight.
blackelk7373 Floyd was the bigger man for not beating his old ass to death. The whole interview Larry antagonized him and floyd tried to contain himself but lost it when Larry kept on dismissing him as a fighter. He had the right to be angry and Larry is just an unprofessional ego driven asshole that always has something to prove
love him or hate him..the guy was entertaining..period
if by entertaining you mean, for lowbrow, uneducated hacks...you nailed it.
who would hate him?
@Tucker Johnson Agreed
@@anthonycampos8057 People who can't handle blunt truth.
Love him!!!
Love him or hate him Larry Merchant was a show in itself. I used to love his interviews!
who would hate him?
Anthony Campos me was kind of a mayweather hater
@@ethansia6299 May weather dk riders hated him.
Larry is a true journalist. No "That's my boy" bs. His job wasn't to praise the fighters but to be critical. I know I'll miss him on HBO!
Love him or hate him, Larry Merchant was a legend and had enormous gravitas. He gave numerous memorable quotes over the years. And he didn't mince words. You have to respect that
I loved him for that because he always seemed to ask the questions I always wanted answered after a fight. He was true to journalism.
+Soxfan73 he is boxing's poet
@@winycityfightfan yup loved it when he interviewed mayweather " I wish I was 50 years youngers so I could kick your ass"
I honestly cant think of one memorable quote that wasnt unprofessional.. larry sucked. Type of guy who says "do you know who i am?"
Idontknow Iforget Sure he had that, but sometimes that isn’t a bad thing. He wasn’t a pandering interviewer tossing up softballs. He had a good balance in those post fight interviews. Larry we miss you! As long as you can still walk and talk, please come back!
Manny Stewards passing ánd you leaving HBO is too much bad news
Loved larry, the man always said it like he saw it. He was honest. 🐐

I MISS HBO Boxing: Legendary Nights.
Larry Merchant was in a class by himself. Salute

Larry Merchant is to boxing what Peter Gammons is to baseball; both great legends.

Oh man I miss him. Saturday nights in the 90’s.
Loved Merchant thank you for all the years.
He had an arrogance you couldn’t help but like. Also liked his no bullshit demeanour during interviews. Gonna miss HBO boxing.
HBO Boxing & Merchant both missed on our screens 😪
Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley complemented each other on ringside commentary.
45 years ago Larry Merchant was old already.
Sin lugar a dudas una leyenda

NOTHING COMPARES TO MERCHANT!!!
When I think back to my earliest years of being a boxing fan I remember Marciano Ali Tyson and Merchant. Larry was as much to do with boxing as anybody. Enjoy you're retirement sir 👍🏻
What about his continued comments about how good looking Wladimir Klitshko was back in the day. Not only hilarious but actually rather creative🤣
Star Dust yes lol, I love it when he said Wladimir is the most beautiful boxer ever and like a Greek god statue that came alive.
Thanks for the memories Larry!
2:30, awesome line from Merchant to the Prince.
Larry has had one heck of a broadcasting career. And while he did cover other sports at times, I'm sure boxing has been his greatest love.
lol i remember watching douglas upset tyson and larry merchant saying "this makes cinderella look like a sad story" brought a smile to my face
I never thought Jim liked Larry. Case in point, Lamps never shed a tear at the end, and my man will get emotional over anything!
My favorite. Ever.

Only someone as great as Larry can come up with a line like that. The greatest boxing commentator that ever lived.
BTW, I also loved when he called muhammad ali "Mark Twain in boxing gloves"! Unbelievable!
Straight Badass !!!!Legend Larry Merchant!

He was retired 10 years too late.

i used to hate larry merchant, but I know realize he was trying to help a business by creating controversy. Enjoy retirement, you've earned it!

The GOAT Larry Merchant 🥊
I was`nt around for Howard cossell however Larry merchant is the greatest commentator of my lifetime period!
never was a fan of Larry until that moment when he stood up to mayweather.
+blackelk7373 He didn't stand up to floyd mayweather, he only made himself look like an asshat. He personally hates Floyd as a person and totally dismissed all his highlights in that fight.

blackelk7373 Terrible attempt at dodging my point mate, do you really believe i'm trolling or have you nothing else to say?
He didn't stand up to Mayweather, Mayweather stood up to him. Merchant was stupid to disrespect the world champion like that.
larry was a G
