La cumparsita is a tango whose melody was created and written in early 1917 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez.
Shortly after, and at the request of Matos Rodríguez, it received musical arrangements from the Argentine Roberto Firpo who, subsequently, played it with his orchestra for the first time in public on April 19, 1917 at the Confitería La Giralda, located in Plaza Independencia. from Montevideo.
It is considered one of the most widespread tangos worldwide.
