Always interesting stories. Sorry you didn't meet your goals, but that's the way things go sometimes. In the past, it seemed that about 1/3 of pennies were still Copper, and today it's usually hovering between about 10% to 15% being Copper. Just like with Silvers, I think people are just pull Copper out of circulation more than we would expect. You do it regularly on CZcams. I do it in the change that passes through my hands and have been for 30 years. How many more people like you and I are out there? Probably quite a few... Take care & keep stacking those monetary metals!

I’ve been collecting wheat pennies well over 50 years ago.
About 10 years ago when I was able to I bought other peoples pennies so they wouldn’t have to take them to the bank, (win-win for both of us) and search for Wheaties.
About a year ago, I started digging the copper ones out of the pennies I came across and about a month ago I started buying rolls of pennies from the bank. $5.00 at a time and I still yet have to go through them.

About ten years ago, a clerk at my local convenience store handed me my change and I noticed three wheat pennies among the change. When i turned them over, I was shocked to see two of them were in the teens and the other in the 20s. Since business was slow in the store, I asked the clerk if she had any more in the register. She said, "Yes, I've been giving them out in change all day." I asked her how she happened to come by so many of them? She said an old man walked into the store and paid for his purchase with them. She let me pick through the cents and I walked out with 42 wheat cents. All of which were dated prior to 1945 and most were in the teens, 20s and 30s. The earliest was coin was dated 1914. And though they were well circulated, all the dates and mint marks were easily readable. The sad part was - she said the man had given her four rolls and that the 42 I took was the last of them. I wish I had stopped in earlier. 😥

@@TwoshedsGabby I have always wondered what else might have been in the rest of those rolls? I don't know why anyone in their right mind would spend them like that because he could have gotten more for the coins at our local coin shop. The only thing that makes sense is he just didn't realize that - though worn - they were worth a lot more than face value. At the time, even sight unseen, I would have given him $25 for the four rolls.

@@TwoshedsGabby That wasn't the last time I got some great coins at that store. One day I popped in to pick up a lottery ticket and a drink, and the clerk handed me three Mercury dimes in change. I pointed out to her that they were worth a lot more than ten cents. She said, "I don't care you can have them." When I asked her who she got them from, she said a migrant worker came in and spent them to buy his lunch. She said she noticed they were a little unusual looking, "But hey, it's just money to me." That convenience store sits on the outside of town and a lot of migrant workers go there for food and drinks.
Over the years, I've managed to pick up a lot of wheat cents and even a few pre-1965 Washington quarters at that store. I keep them all in a special jar with a note saying, "Believe it or not, I picked these up in change!" 🤑🤗

Love at first sight I’m not too sure about, I think love has to grow.
I have a question about the 1982 weights that I’ve come across. Maybe not a question but a scratching my head moment. Just wondering if you can help me out.
    Here they are around about:
    2.55 / 3.07 / 3.11 just wondering why there’s 3 different weights?
I cringe every time I hear the price of copper dropping. Only because I have about 800 to 1000 pounds of copper wire I need to strip and I’m nowhere close to doing it. 🫣
Sorry you didn’t reach your goal. And looking forward to your next hunt. Take care.👍😁🙏

      @TwoshedsGabby  Před 3 měsíci

Thank you for writing, good to hear from you.
Thank you also for you condolences.
The 2.55 g is the zinc, and the 3.07, and 3.11 is copper, not sure why the variation. But I see that too. Could be slight wear, could be the scales, but I think it's another answer, I just don't have it.
For my collection, anything under 2.99 g I toss in with the zink just to be safe, unless it is an obvious copper coin with a lot of wear. If I sell copper to someone someday I don't want them to say they found some zinc cents in there.
But sometimes I weight a coin and it says like 2.97, then I weigh it again and it's 3.1, so I do feel like my cheap little scale is not perfect for sure. In fact, I've dropped it once or twice and need to just get another one
I think I have a back up somewhere, but not sure where. LoL.
Copper is on the rise, but like all commodities, it fluctuates as it goes up.
I have another box of pennies I hope to get to in the next day or two. Spending most of my day at the hospital, and going home in the evenings.
