They did it again in 1998 when his son Akihito came on a state visit to the UK but this time the police lined the Mall with vans blocking the view from the road. The police also manhandled many of the veterans who ignored their orders to move. One of them was my great uncle Ernie Wilde whose son recorded the whole thing and sent it to the newspapers. To say there was national outrage over it would be an understatement.

During the MPs' expenses controversy he "accidentally" destroyed his records just before he was required to hand them over.

My grandfather passed recently. Some of the best memories I have are of him teaching me marksmanship and weapons history. He was a collector and had to carry a revolver on a lot of business trips abroad in the 60s.
When Blair pushed for the handgun ban, the police came to my grandfather's house and confiscated everything.
Hundreds of rifles, pistols and shotguns of historical value were stolen and turned to scrap iron without compensation. Now, I cannot pass the skills he taught on to my child if we continue to live in this country. That is just one of the ways that Blair ruined a way of life that we used to hold dear

A very sober and rational presentation of facts . As a veteran of the Iraq war , I did meet Blair in Basra . Talking to a crowd of people he is charismatic and appears able to lead . On a personal basis he is cold and worrying . Thank you as always Mark . I just wish the right people would get into politics ....
He is an accomplice to War Crimes by endorsing and enthusiastically supporting the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Remember the Minor fact that so-called WMD were a fiction dreamed up in order to justify the invasion that resulted in the deaths of approx. 1 million Iraqis. I figure that's of trifling significance to most upstanding morally superior British people, but it was an crime against humanity.

I had no idea Hirohito received the highest level of knighthood, let alone had the knighthood restored a mere 26 years after the war ended with Japan. What a slap in the face of the British and Commonwealth soldiers and civilians, and their allies.
The same year Nixon gave Okinawa back.
I remember the kerfuffle when Prince Philip was set to attend Hirohito's funeral. Philip was the royal patron of the Burma Star Association!

To the best of my knowledge, Hirohito wasn't responsible for anything that happened. Japan was under a military shogunate at the time, Hirohito was basically placed under house arrest for the duration of the war. Tojo "acting out his wishes" as it were. under Hirohito's tutelage, Japan was democratic.

Great piece Mark. Some historians tend to present only facts and leave it up to the viewer to draw their own conclusions, but I find your style much more interesting and entertaining- giving us the facts and then your own opinion on them. Great stuff
The bar is sometimes set pretty low to get a knighthood. Jimmy Saville, Rolf Harris, Prince Naseem Hamed, Klaus Schwab and now Tony Blair.
Sir Jimmy was mates with Charlie, Rolf painted the Queen. Mountbatten like Jimmy and his personal diaries are not fully available to the public for some reason. Lovely.
In the US you just add it to your name - Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Baron Trump!

Agreed, the last words in the video really sums up why so many people feel he shouldn't be rewarded with the highest honour in Britain. It seems quite similar to if Churchill was awarded the same because of Gallipoli. Unthinkable basically.

Just wanted to pop in and mention that my boss at work, another armchair historian, is also a fan of this channel. We both agree that the difference between Mark Felton and the rest is the quality! It's always high here. Furthermore, the topics are always obscure/interesting. We both consume a lot of history so the more common subject matter won't capture our attention.

Politicians should not get such honours. Nor should anyone simply good at what they do and well rewarded as a result, i.e. celebs, pop stars, musicians, sportsmen/women and actors. These should be given to those who go beyond the call of duty or do something truly beneficial to humanity. This is why I would not single out Blair on his own. Let's not forget, Ceaușescu received a knighthood. Later rescinded, of course. Good and informative video as usual.

I had a very "dramatic" History teacher (Who also was the Drama teacher) and I loved History lessons because he brought it to life and made it relevant to how it all developed into todays world.

Tony Blair did the most dismantling of British aristocratic and chivalric systems in modern history. He even took away HMS Yacht Britannia, the Queen's favourite home. To be consistent he should have refused this honour or at least settled for a KBE.

Mark I so dearly love this channel, I'm a veteran and I served in both Afghan and Iraq. The blood on this mans hands is truly unbearable, he sold out veterans of the Ulster troubles and then sent Troops into Iraq looking for the unfindable (WMD). In 1923, Italy's new Prime Minister, Il Duce, had been awarded the "Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath,' entitling him to be listed in the latest edition of Who's Who as, "Sir Benito Mussolini". Not surprisingly, this honored would be annulled in 1940

Edit: I didn’t mean to sound like I had anything against Major. To be honest I don’t remember a great deal about him given my age at the time. Just that to be probably the most popular PM since another when was only one between is a statement that sounds more grand than it should be.
In the USA, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama were also "popular" (and Joe Biden will be too, as soon as the pollsters figure out how to frame the questions and whom to poll) -- so what does that tell you?
The only thing 'Major' about him is his surname, everything else about him is very minor indeed.

Reporting politics in the UK is usually without bias
A tiny side note: the Order of the Thistle was *re*-established by James VII in 1687, but existed in some form significantly earlier: there's a painting at the Palace of Holyroodhouse of James V (r. 1513-42) wearing the collar of the Order. While there's a story that it was founded by Robert I (Bruce) after the Battle of Bannockburn, this is almost certainly not the case, and the most likely candidates would be one of the Renaissance monarchs James III and James IV, following a trend for establishing Orders of Chivalry in leading European kingdoms.
That is why although the Garter ranks higher, the Thistle has the honorific 'Most *Ancient* and Most Noble Order of the Thistle'.
I'd like to see the order of the thistle rammed up Blairs sphincter, and no anaesthetic preferably! I think it'd look splendid lodged there.
Actually, there are some claims that the Order of the Thistle was founded by Hungus, King of the Picts in the 700's.
Not sure about that, though.

There’s a great deal of irony in justifying Tony Blair’s knighthood based on tradition, seeing as one primary criticisms of him was his merciless destruction of so many of Britain’s oldest traditions.
Similar to the irony of Thatcher's funeral being paid for by the public purse after her privatisation spree

Daniel Marsden: Which of Britain's oldest traditions did Tony Blair destroy? I can't think of any. I and many others felt his election as New Labour prime minister in 1997as a reason for joy and hope after the horrendous years of the 1980s when so much of Britain was destroyed by an ideology driven government. The former prime minister who should never have received any honours was Thatcher nor should she have received a sent-state funeral. Dumped downn a former coal mine to the sound of, " Ding dong the wicked witch is dead", would have been more appropriate!

I always assumed that to be "knighted" was a generic title that could be handed out to whomever for whatever, hence so many British actors or scholars etc with the prefix "Sir" in their name. I had no idea there were different orders, with different levels and that some were limited. Very educating video for this non-Brit!

The honours system in my view needs a complete overhaul, along with the House of Lords. I am not against recognising people for great contribution to society but handing out honours to people who have just been doing their job should stop, in particular to politicians unless they have made some lasting and outstanding contribution beyond their political service.

I will have to agree with the House of Lords: with two exceptions (the Duke of Norfolk, as Earl Marshal of Great Britain and the Marquess of Cholmondeley, as Lord Great Chamberlain), the 92 elected Hereditary peers and all Life Peers should be required to retire at age 75, much like the Senators in the Canadian Senate; the exceptions being the twenty-six senior (arch)bishops in the Church of England, who are required by law to retire from their (arch)bishoprics at age 70 and are only Lords of Parliament by virtue of their office, and the two hereditary Great Officers of State, however upon their 75th birthdays, their spots in the day-to-day deliberations are to be taken by their oldest sons, "lawfully begotten", via Writ of Acceleration, as Lord Maltravers (Duke of Norfolk) and Baron Newborough (Marquess of Cholmondeley) respectively.
As for the knighthoods, being the Garter and Thistle, there should be a requirement that only those from the lower knighthoods (Bath, St. Michael & St. George, Royal Victorian, and Order of the British Empire) who have distinguished themselves beyond their initial knighting in the above-mentioned junior orders would only be considered for the Garter (England and Wales) or Thistle (Scotland) when an opening comes up. If anything, the Knight or Dame Commander of the British Empire should only be given to the PM, and only if their service to the Crown warrants such, although HM can also drop a male PM's recognition down to only a Knight Bachelor or not recognize them at all, particularly if a PM was forced out due to a Parliamentary snap election.
So actors shouldn't be recognised either, even if they've won an academy award, because they're just doing their job.

I have no idea why the Lords didn't go down fighting Veto the bill. And why the monarch signed it. A complete destruction of British culture and history. I was under the impression one was awarded a knighthood for outstanding chivalry. Blair certainly did not display a modicum of chivalry. No matter how you look at it he & Bush were responsible for untold devastation & mayhem resulting in countless hundreds of thousands of deaths in the ME. The devastation continues to this day. Two million people marched through London in protest at what he was about to do. Awarding him a knighthood brings into question the integrity & honesty of those making the decision to continue with this award. I don't say that lightly.

A knighthood should be a recognition of the honour and respect earned through service to the people. This politician was never working for the people but was only ever trying to change society according to his own self serving partisan agenda. Blair is an iconic example that dishonourable individuals can be elected, “Most noble” my arse, the honours list is a crock.
New Labor did end stagnation of the British economy, so Blair did do some good at number 10. He does have blood on his hands for sure though.

@@hafmaint7557 That was Gordon Brown and he didn't sell ALL the gold reserves. From the Daily Mirror "Between July 1999 and March 2002 Gordon Brown's government sold 395 tonnes of UK gold, about 58% of the government's total reserves of 715 tonnes." So Blair was no longer in power

Just to add a small consideration on your last point (as I haven't formed a particular opinion on the whole question): the granting of the Order of the Garter by default to former PMs might seem silly, since as you say it should reward excellence, but the fact that it is an honour in the sole gift of the monarch in my opinion prevents it being given to political leaders on any other criteria. For the monarch to award one PM and not another with the Order would be perceived, in essence, as a political choice, and one which they shouldn't make at all. So you either stop awarding the honour altogether, or you give it to everybody in recognition of the role and office they held within the realm, regardless of their actual merits (for which there may be other specific honours, perhaps awarded on the advice of other bodies and institutions).
Well said. The Queen cannot seen to be declaring a political position, so as you say either every PM gets the Order or none of them get the Order.

@@vk2ig It has nothing to do with the Queen's personal political opinion, she has awarded the Garter to politicians of all colours. It is all down to who she believes deserves to be honoured, for whatever reason she chooses.

Lewis Hamilton getting a knighthood was another shocker. Two hard fights in F1 his whole career and lost them both. Lennox Lewis didn't get knighted, he had a great record of winning 91% of his fights.
Mick: And Less Hamilton is a tax cheat, which should disqualify him from any honour, who is too quick to play the 'race card' when actually he is not an uderpriviledged man from an ethnic minority background! I'm not a particular follower of F1 but for years now I have always hoped for anyone but the thoroughly unpleasant Lewis Hamilton winning races or gaining titles. I feel this handing out of knighthoods to sportsmen for just winning a race or receiving an Olympic gold medal, Mo Farah being a classic example, debases the honours system. We can only hope that when Prince Charles becomes king the whole honours system can be brought up to date, for a start removing the word empire from the minor honours, totally inappropriate, years after the dissolution of the British Empire and creating new classes of honours for sporting prowess and the rewarding of 'national treasures' in the arts and for achievement in science, engineering, design etc. We should also cease giving honours to business men and women just for being successful and making lots of money. Isn't that reward enough for them? The other point to mention about Tony Blair's knighthood is that it is merely an honorific and does not confer any real power or status, far more troubling are those men and women made life peers, often for very dubious or even nefarious reasons who sit in the House of Lords where they have real influence on the lives of their fellow citizens!
