Here's a video of BNSF AC4400CW on a Metrolink Test Train on I-10 freeway in Alhambra and some of Metrolink trains in Burbank, LA and others.
Two sort toots at 4:07. Saying hi! Thanks for the post. I live in Ventura and the accident at Oxnard (2-24-15) showed "mostly" the Hyundai Rotem cab car worked as expected. Unfortunately the engineer passed. Oh well if they can afford the BNSF lease I am sure the Metrolink engineers are going to enjoy their new ride!
It would be interesting to see ML buying these units, or at least longer-term lease, maybe we could see an AC44 in Metrolink paint. Unlikely, but possible.
Wish I coulda been out there to see this. I'll return one day! Cheers from WV
I've been anticipating this moment! Also, rare catch! BNSF on metrolink + AC4400CW??? two rares in one video!
It's now not as rare as before. Soon there will be BNSF's running on every Metrolink train possibly before March.
+Amtrak and AWVR Fan it's June and about 10+ BNSF AC44CWs are sitting idle
JoNaLgAmInG
Most are already on. Art (CEO of Metrolink) wanted 30 to be running by the end of May. But the rest might be until later.
Yep, about time this happened, I lost my father
over those cab cars.
I'm sorry about your father. I saw it on the news. :(
+Snuffy's Cat Productions thanks Snuffy, keep up the good videos
+Shawn Steele I am sorry for your loss. I suspect you know much more about this, but some of the Rotem cars had a defect in them, and thus they decided to lease the BNSF locos after the tragic Oxnard accident. For the crew out there today, the deployment of these leased locomotives are not being utilized. Tonight in Montalvo, I saw a Rotem ready to head out for tomorrow morning without the BNSF heading. I have seen the BSNF loco heading mostly in the last couple of weeks, but not tonight. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.
I did not know your father was an engineer btw how old are you
What happened
Nice video...but I believe cabcars will just trail when the AC44s are in service and not going bye bye. However, they won't lead anymore....and several cabcars will likely get inspected at a certain time while the rest trail behind the new units. ...
Jon great to have you in snuffed channel
Since BNSF is leasing the units to Metrolink, does that mean that Metrolink engineers operate the BNSF units? Just curious.
It's also tragic that Metrolink invested so much into newer "safer" cab cars only to have them taken out of service for the same reason that the Bombardier Tri-levels are being cycled out.
the metrolink engineers operates the bnsf
We just got a ton of CTC-5 cabs on the MBTA. In short, they work great. The likely question is are they safe, for surely the widecab GEVOs must be safer? Actually, any train should be solid in a crash, even a cabcar. Otherwise they wouldn't be a common sight. For perspective, the Keystone corridor has cabcar operations over 100 mph, and those are amfleet cabs, which are old. Brand new Rotems should not be a question of safety. Food for thought, stay toasty my friends!
They are still in operation today >:C
Man those were short lived but hey I'll gladly take having freight power taking car of passenger trains but would be nice if they used the Santa Geeps to power the trains at least the local power would be used more frequently then for us to enjoy. Nice catches Snuffy
I think they are doing this so in case a train in reverse is to hit a car, passengers won't be in the train car the is the initial point of impact. This is going to be costly though.
interisting as these cars were restult of the horrible chattsworth accident . metrolink was the only railroad that was required to have these cars . keep up the good work snuffy.
allan egleston Its Chasworth Not Chattsworth
What's happening with the Rotems? Did it turn out as a disaster like the "Silverliner V?"
I don't think the problem really is the Rotem cab car. If you look at Metrolink's tracks there are galore of grade crossings which are always prone to accidents with trespassers. Most of them should be replaced with bridges or underpasses. Also a lot of tracks you can access without a problem, no fences, no barriers. The dumbf... who caused that derailment just drove his truck on the tracks and walked away, why had he been able to access the tracks at all? I understand the state doesn't have the billions it would cost to make tracks unaccessible for the public but even if you would couple a tank to the head end - hitting a truck at 79 mph you're always in dire straits
The Oxnard crash happened because that crossing is dangerous and yes, the rotem cabcars had a flawed prow, making underpasses and bridges at crossings would significantly reduce collisions but you can just make safer railroad crossings
They don't have enough engines and the BNSF engines are also their for that reason to metrolink has a lot of old engines that need matinence but new engines arrive next year the rotem cab cars are being looked into as the NTSB believes their might be safety concerns after s collision with a car caused the rotem cars to derail
At least half of all Metrolink trains have better-sounding horns now.
Superb ! Greetings from France.
RAILsIMAGES Your trains are better than ours.
Their still Here Homeboy
Back In February 2015 Metrolink 102 Slammed Into A Pick Up Truck In Oxnard And That Driver Of The Truck Turned Too Soon And Turned On To The Tracks And 3 Cars Fell On They're Side The F59PH And The First Hyundai Rotem Coach Were Still On The Tracks And 25 People Got Injured 4 Crittically
The bnsf horn is far better than the rotem cars' and certainly the last engine. I also take it that the bombardier cabs are no better than the rotems in this circumstance? Why not use them in the interim?
At 2:18 metrolink should paint that old car like the rotem car at 2:18.
Cool Video
2024 May 15th
BNSF is going into passenger service market, like in the 50s ,60;s
they should being back bombardier but as passenger cars only
Yesterday I saw a northbound Metrolink with 5 passenger cars at San Juan and one of the 2 bombardiers was SCAX 604, a bombardier Cabcar. Bombardier cabcars are in service but they're in the middle of trains, I also noticed that the front of the Cabcar was painted all white, the horn and bell were removed
JoNaLgAmInG why they removed it well at least there in service
Hey, while they are using the BNSF locomotives, are they just inspecting and modifying the Hyundai-Rotem cab cars?
They're gonna use some rotems to investigate the 2015 Oxnard derailment. While that's happening, most cabcars will still be in use to maintain passenger capacity. They'll just have a BNSF positioned in front of the cabcar.
I thought they were advertised as "safety cars", they were only introduced to replace the Bombardiers after the Chatsworth collision weren't they? They were supposed to be safer. Someone seems to have goofed there. Are Metrolink publicly funded?
It was a few months ago when the found out that they're sort of unsafe because of the cow catcher. The cow catcher wasn't designed right to prevent a train to derail when it hits a vehicle at a crossing. Back in February of 2015, Metrolink 102 derailed in Oxnard when it hit a pick up truck on the tracks and some debris went under the wheels, and that's what caused the train to derail really bad.
Why? Weren't these cars just placed into service?
+pittsburgh railfan yeah, 3-4 years ago
The reason why they are putting BNSF engines on them is to enhance safety on the Metrolink trains. This way, there will be a locomotive on both sides of the train so it will have a less likely chance for it to derail when it hits a vehicle. A cabcar led Metrolink 102 on Feb 24 of this year and hit a truck at Oxnard and derailed, and i think the reason why it derailed is that the plow was mounted a little too low. So if a BNSF was leading 102 that day, it wouldn't have derailed. So basically, they are leasing BNSF locos to enhance safety while a few Rotems go on inspection. Hope this helps.
Lirr deserves to get the rotems. Lirr needs some more service.
I'm sorry but they won't because the rotems are too tall for clearances on the LIRR and NY penn station also the LIRR is high platforms which the Rotems have low platform doors.
I saw thses train's recently on union station
not bad cool
how did the test performed ?
So the totem ones are the ones that look like the cargo ones?
Geminijets140 *rotem
The crash in 2008 Gives you a lesson why not to text and drive at the same time a Accident could occur
Metrolink, Bnsf, Union Pacific, Csx, Amtrak, Metra, Caltrain Have Postive Train Control (PTC) When the driver doesn't Respond to PTC To Brake the train to a red signal or a incorrect switch then PTC Will Bring the train to a Safe Stop, But it not Prevent the train from striking a Car or truck that drives around railroad crossing Gates.
Those BNSF GE Locomotives are a far way from being CARB compliant. They smoke much worse then the existing EMD locos. Time to rethink using freight locos on passenger service.
So will Amtrak take all those locomotives that Metrolink is getting id of?
+Satchel Hogan no... why would they do that?
SoCal Train Productions More locomotives for their fleet..?
Satchel Hogan No... Amtrak has more than enough. Metrolink is just doing testing on the cab cars while the BNSF locomotives are leased.
Okay.
what's wrong with the rotem cars
Maybe Caltrain should by them.
:(
I was mad when they did that
Makes absolutely no sense. I don't understand why Metrolink is doing this.
The reason why they're doing this is to enhance safety to the passengers. Apparently, some investigator found out what caused the train to derail at Oxnard in February. It plow the mounted too low, and when it hit the truck, the plow made the wheels come off the tracks. Metrolink doesn't have enough locomotives to have a locomotives on each end of every train that runs. So they had to lease BNSF locomotives for one year for 40 million bucks, while a few Rotems are taken out of service to be inspected. Once they fix the problem with the rotems, then they'll possibly go back in service in 2017.
Well, if the Rotems come back to service, that would be cool.
The Rotems are very smooth but also very weak. There was a derailment in Oxnard or Ventura where a Rotem hit a truck and derailed. Metrolink is already worried about accidents (every collision they’ve had has been fatal), so I assume this is temporary until they can fix the Rotems or find another cabcar to run.
The rotem cab cars don't go well with certain metrolink locomotives
Rotem cars only go well when the locomotives have the blue ribbon paint scheme
reallly?
why?
It's a joke bud.
+Randomguy6527 Productions lol sry! Sweet video btw!
+Mbtafan1062 Productions It's a safety issue for train engineers. Google Metrolink & BNSF locomotives.
+Snuffy's Cat Productions ah ok
+Snuffy's Cat Productions Great video, looks like I'd better go to Main St. bridge to make a tribute video on the last of the Rotem cars, also I never knew Metrolink ran trains on UP side? Maybe it's an express and doesn't stop at Union Station?
it going to cost to use bnsfs locomotives so just find a new cab cara
It's a $40 million lease for just one year. New cabcars would be costly too.
+Amtrak and AWVR Fan Those ugly rotems need to get scrapped!
+Amtrak and AWVR Fan FWI, Can you make a grounded video out of Metrolink Rotem Cabcar? (His grounder will be BNSF H2 & Bombraider Cabcar)
Officer Benthetrainkid But Then They Won't See The BNSF Logo
were they built without collision posts.maybe that is wy they are having so much trouble.Hyunday should retrofit them or pay the famiies for their loss.Be blessed.!
Farewell rotem cab cars.😞😪😪😪😪
+cool bro productions Eddie C Rotems will still be running, but trailing behind AC4400's.
Honestly I'm not sad at all this is happening. Those Cab Cars were kinda ugly in my opinion...
This was uploaded in 2015....
I Hate The BNSF Locimotives Being On Metrolink
Good I hate rotem
