ABC-TV Still the One 1979 ending

- For many years the major TV networks in the U.S. would each create a "fall campaign" to build their promotion efforts around. The campaigns included custom graphics and a song, which could be either an established hit or an original composition. A full length version of the song would be produced with special lyrics, and become the sound track for a lengthy video designed to introduce the new fall programming line-up at the annual affiliates convention.
In 1979, ABC-TV secured the rights to use the song "Still the One", which was an appropriate campaign theme because they were the #1 rated network again that year. Influenced by the most popular music of the day, they went for a disco arrangement. Here is the end of the 1979 affiliates video, which includes a rundown of all the network's stars announced by Ernie Anderson, the iconic voice of ABC primetime from that era. JAM sang several versions of this track, as well as customized shorter versions for all the ABC affiliates. The custom graphics for the network and the affiliates were created by Harry Marks.

You have to praise Ernie Anderson for talking along with the beat so perfectly...
Ken George Jones I wish narrators would do this today...
I'm sure it took plenty of takes to get it just right. They said "just one more take please" and I bet he was like "are you buying lunch?" Haha! They said "we'll see" and he's was like "alright then let's see, where was I again?" ROFL!
@@Mysterwright I bet there were way more curse words from Ernie
In those days, Ernie would've been narrating this live as this played on screen in front of him. Today, it would be recorded separately and brought together in post-production.
Is that who it was? To me, he's the voice-over of that era of ABC, and they haven't been the same to me without him!
Crazy that I was born in 2002 and I love these guys. Today's generation will not know these people at all. It's just a shame
My sentiments exactly. It is indeed a low down dirty crying shame that many of the television icons--both living and deceased--in this promo are largely unknown to today's youngsters. Although it's only been nearly nine years since his tragic and unexpected suicide, even Robin Williams (may he continue to rest in peace) will eventually be forgotten by future generations in the years and decades to come.
Oh my goodness... I bet it took the late great Ernie Anderson three days to do this! I loved Ernie! The out takes reel must be pure gold!!!
I enthusiastically concur. I'll bet dollars to donuts it took Ernie Anderson several dozen takes to correctly recite the list of television icons mentioned in this promo. May he continue to rest in peace.
Remember when networks mattered? Ah, memories.
I love how Norman Fell was the ender. I salute you Mr. Roper. I salute you.
This was after ABC revamped its news department, with the longest-running and famous four-note musical logo.
The music logo and the comeback of Peter Jennings was only the beginning. Peter had three co-anchors: Max Robinson in Chicago, Frank Reynolds in Washington, and Barbara Walters and her special assignments from New York.
I found this by accident and now feel nostalgic as hell. I was nine when this aired,. And I just lol'd when the announcer said "John Forsyth" and they showed a speaker-box.
Two years later, he'd be seen in the flesh on "DYNASTY".
Arguably the best bit in the piece, yes.
The announcer was the legendary Ernie Anderson
ABC 1979...kickin' ass and taking names. It was a great time to work for an ABC affiliate.
It's amazing how many of these people have come and gone. It's also amazing how I was only born in 1988 and yet I recognize almost all of these people. I'm such a geek lol
You and me both, bro. I'm a tad bit older than you (out of respect for my privacy, I refuse to divulge my age) and I also recognized all of the celebs and icons in this promo.
Im from the UK, but this is seriously impressive. Never mind its a few years old, its imaginative, and quality, big time!! You will never see anything like this in the uk, very interesting material.
Jonathan Waterhouse BBC or UK networks never made their actors do corny ass contractually obligated network promos for the new TV season?
I believe that's Ernie Anderson himself in that opening shot.
It's unfortunate that many of the celebrities mentioned in this promo are now deceased...may they all rest in peace.
Not all of them.
That's true, @@ashleysmith8402. A few of them are still alive and kicking.
@Jozar S. who is this person at 1:44 and at 2:19
Peter Strauss is still living, just celebrated his birthday on February 20th.
It just makes you feel good inside, positive and uplifted. That was some power they had. They let it go and replaced it with angst and vulgarity. Sad.
Yep. Nowadays all we have on the small screen are reality television glory hogs (such as the Kardashian clan) and social media celebs.
What a fantastic compilation, and so many of the NAMES that GAVE us all that fun and enjoyment back in those years, much of what lives on today! I'm struck, though, by how many are no longer with us...too many who still should be. Bitter-sweet, but beautiful piece. Thanks for uploading it!
facts. that was wonderful

ABC Promo (1979)
1979 was the year that both WRTV Indianapolis and KSTP Minneapolis/St. Paul just joined ABC. Those two stations are still affiliates of that network to this day.
As did longtime NBC affiliate WATE in Knoxville.
1979: The '80s are about to arrive...
2019: The '20s are about to arrive...
You gotta keep in mind back in the 70’s all you had were the networks ABC, NBC , CBS, so there was huge competition with ratings
just me and fox wasn’t even born
Justin Fencsak Fox appeared on the scene in 1986 but it took them until 1994 for them to be #3 behind ABC and NBC when they got the rights to the NFL from CBS
ABC Didn't Forget About Dick Clark And Richard Dawson
ABC Really Missed Them
RIP Dick And Richard
Even though their daytime lineup on both weekdays and Saturdays was booming at that time, ABC did indeed overlook not only Dick Clark ("American Bandstand" and "The $20,000 Pyramid") and Richard Dawson ("Family Feud"), they also ignored Susan Lucci ("All My Children") as well as Genie Francis and Anthony Geary ("General Hospital").
Wow! Neat promo. I would like to request the 1979 ABC Saturday Morning Promo which includes the same jingle, "Still The One" to be uploaded on CZcams. Because that would be so cool.

Thank you for the reminder, Alfonso! I just revised my original comment to add Frank Reynolds to my list of the deceased celebrities mentioned in the promo...for the life of me, I don't know how I could've missed Frank Reynolds; I must've been thinking about the holidays when I first posted my comment.
Ernie Anderson was truly the voice of ABC during the '70s and '80s! May he rest in peace...he is still missed! Thanks for commenting, wecontrolthevideo!

abc number #1 in 1979 now #3 2017 better go back to the 1980's for tv shows ideas
peter kenth ABC started the season still #1, but in the end, CBS would be #1 once again.
@Jozar S. And Good Morning America the #1 morning news program.
On the NBC side: Sunday Night Football is still the #1 primetime show overall.
You're absolutely right,@@johnnyballenatl. CBS ultimately rebounded and regained the top spot as America's number one television network midway through the 1979-80 season thanks to not only "Dallas" (during the "Who Shot J.R.?" storyline), but also "The Dukes Of Hazzard" (which preceded "Dallas" on CBS' Friday night schedule), as well as the continued successes of "60 Minutes," "Lou Grant," "The Incredible Hulk," "M*A*S*H," "One Day At A Time," "Alice," "WKRP In Cincinnati," "Knots Landing," and "The Jeffersons."
No mentioning on game show emcees like Dick Clark ($20,000 Pyramid and American Bandstand) and Richard Dawson (Family Feud).
Is there a CD quality version of this minus the dialog in the beginning available?
If you write a note to Jon Wolfort, and ask him very, very nicely... :-)
Half the people in this clip have died as at now. Sad.
Indeed.
Wow they named everyone but God!
In 1979, everyone but God *was on ABC*. :-)
Is this a list of names or a rap?
RPN-TV 9
Can't forget one very important name not mentioned too: Ernie Anderson. I have to ask, in the full vocal version (not heard in this video but is posted by others on YT), is the female singing in the beginning indeed Florence Warner? It sure sounds like her.. Mainly known for all those Frank Gari "Hello (city/region name)" campaign songs.
No, it wasn't Florence. However we did post a stereo remix of the entire song on the JAM website here: www.jingles.com/jam/fans/bits.html Just scroll down a little and you'll find it under the video. Enjoy.
@@JAM-PAMS Thanks Jon- I went to listen to those on your site, and I enjoyed the lyric "Still the One, for Shirley & Laverne" (so that it would rhyme with the previous line, LOL)... thanks for the laugh!
This is great, but where are Richard Dawson and Dick Clark?
Yeah. Dawson hosted Family Feud while Clark helmed The $20,000 Pyramid (weekdays) & American Bandstand (Saturdays following the morning cartoons).
Jon: Was there discussion about slowing the tempo down from the original song? The 77 package was a bit slower, but this one much more so...
Theme songnya RCTI OKE tahun 1994.
I am looking for this promo but with ABC daytime stars I can't find it anywhere...if anyone has it please post it
There are two versions of the abc Daytime 1979 Fall promos, here's version #2 czcams.com/video/eKzqeKF86Rk/video.html ---- version #1 has all hot air balloons. I have that one on my Blog post called "Fall"---which is on my September Videos page found in my links. A bit confusing, hard to find things, these days, and my organization skills are not what they used to be !!!!!

I would like to know if I could make requests of what I would like to see on your CZcams channel.
Does anybody have an idea where all the balloons were filmed?

@JAMcreative
I would like to know if you take requests.
What about ABC Daytime. Family Feud was number one and All My Children was the number soap.
But before the end of 70s, General Hospital dethroned its 'sister soap' All My Children from #1 spot in the ratings.
@@JozarS.-ol4fj AMC was only number 1 for 1978-79 beating ATWT after a 20 year run at number 1. ALSO prior both ATWT and AW shared the number spot in 1977-78. AMC was never number 1 again, but it was kinda giving Y&R a run for it’s money in the early 90’s at number 2 from 1992-94. Both soaps were very good.

This isn't completely right. While JAM may have done the 1979 campaign, ABC already had the rights to "Still the One" before that. They previously used it in the almost legendary 1977 fall promo, which eschewed this focus on the stars in favor of unknown actors and people on the street.
The 1977-78 campaign was "We're The One", which is a completely different song. 1978-79 was the first use of "Still The One", which was used again (with a different arrangement) for 1979-80 which is what's posted here.
+JAMcreative Nope, Still the One was used in 1977.
My understanding is the same as Jason and Roy's; that Still was used in 77 and 79...
