The Good, the Bad, and the Dirty Side of Sailing

  • Sailing can be oh so good, bad or down-right unpredictable, dirty, and ugly! After spending time with the feral horses of Cumberland Island, it's time to continue sailing towards the Bahamas. And what a sail it was, maybe one of the best days we've had on the water yet. But of course, all good things in boat life must come to an end as we meet another bridge that just won't let us pass.

    ❓Why Folsom Ocean Views?!
⚓Because Folsom is Charles’ last name and it’s a play on the Johnny Cash Lyric "Folsom Prison Blues".
    ❓Why a #Catamaran?
⚓Jes gets really seasick while sailing and the upstairs galley really helps when we #travel.
❓You both work full time jobs?
⚓Yup. Charles has a traditional 9-5 position as the Director of Customer Success and Jes owns her own business doing art commissions for clients. #WorkingandSailing
    ❓Where to Next?
⚓We are not sure. Part of the fun of this #DigitalNomad #lifesytle is that you can pick your #adventures

If you look on the west bank, the large towering boat lift you see is for the new yacht repair faculty that being built. The saying that owning a sailboat means emptying your bank account into the ocean is very true. I found that cruising is a continuous failure and fixing of hardware. One has to carry double of all hardware, especially engine parts. Many prospective sailors think that Bluewater cruising is all cocktails with friends. In reality it is moments of abject terror interspersed with boredom and maintenance, this is especially true of ocean crossing.

Hope you took a pic of that fish, so you will know to release it next time. In my book, Tiny Tunny/Bonita are not edible. Also release King Mackerel, which I also do not consider worth the effort to cook. There are too many other good fish to eat, in offshore waters.
Finally, Charles, when you say we are doing x knots in y knots of "apparent wind", it makes no sense to me. Think it more appropriate to state boat speed vs true wind.
Hope to see you in the Bahamas. We are heading over next year, leaving Texas around mid Feb, probably cross around April 1.

As for the wind - I can see that. Our knot log is constantly clogged so true wind isn't always available. I have a good understanding of what the true wind is without it, but that doesn't help you guys out at all. We'll do better 😀

    • @michaelzotzky4378
      @michaelzotzky4378 Pƙed 2 lety

@@FolsomOceanViews Yeah, but as an example, if you are going dead downwind at 4 knots in 7 knots of true wind, then the apparent wind would be 3 knots. So you'd announce, "we are doing 4 knots in 3 knots of apparent wind."
Yep, and I have to pull and clean the barnacles off my knot meter frequently. When at the dock, I usually pull it and leave it out if going to be there more than a few days. You're right, its a pain.

You lost your fishing cherry, Charles! BZ you! Bonito are best eaten when young in my opinion, although I`m not a fan , there are better things to eat. We don`t get them in our waters, they prefer the cooler waters off the south coast. I will eat them cooked on the barby, they taste too fatty from a pan. I do really thin fillets and serve with a hot thai sauce or crushed garlic, lime juice and thinly sliced chilli .
Jess, top tip, buy some baby wipes ! They are far more elegant and don`t make you look like you`ve been mud wrestling ! :)

We are still getting used to it, but it's relatively easy I would say. She works really well between 150 and 180 apparent. To go closer than 150 - I think it would really helps to have a barber hauler, which we don't have right now. Even without one we can get her up and running to around 120 apparent. And once she's set - you can just ignore it for hours typically.
And we went with Oxley instead of Parasailor mostly out of convenience. The guys at Oxley were great at answering all of my questions and staying top of mind so that's what we went with. I have no regrets but also didn't exactly do a hard comparison either.

Shouldn't try to gain views by using a very popular and well known sailing channels name in your title.

I wonder what Clint Eastwood would have to say about thatđŸ€” if you haven’t seen the movie I recommend you check it out. It’s a long time favorite and a true American classic!

Your title was stolen from GBU and you did it on purpose to get viewers. are you not capable to come up an original title of your own.

Or it's a common phrase dating back over 50 years to a Clint Eastwood movie. 🙄

      1. What she said đŸ™ŒđŸ»đŸ™ŒđŸ»đŸ™ŒđŸ»
      2. Not capable of capable of coming up with a title? That’s silly. We are clearly capable of this. See list of videos with titles.
      3. Thankfully using this title has ZERO negative impact on the channel you have mentioned. And while I have never seen their production, I am positive that they are kind people with good hearts and would not sweat a tear over someone using a movie title that they enjoy in their own way.

The Good, the Bad, and the ugly is a western from 1966. Not sure if it was a phrase before that, but it’s where we learned it.
I had to look up what you were referring to. Silly assumption!
