Once upon a time Matty Healy sent this song to Taylor, and here we all are
and sampled it in the song Love it If We Made It - The 1975
"We're just left to decay, modernity has failed us
And I'd love it if we made it
Yes, I'd love it if we made it"
We are all attached to the invisible string 🫶🏼
Oh sh...i have enough to see people putting blessings on this singer, while they were already known a long time before her! they absolutely don't need her: it's even swift that owe them this song! So stop, people, to always refer to swift, because it's all the contrary. Me i know this song, because contrary to most of you, i have learned to listen music by uncommon paths, and to avoid commercial and popular artists. One time again, the blessing should goes to the blue nile, not to swift...But if you would have made the effort to go above the normal way, and normal popular music, you would have known this music before. So it's blue nile that should be thanked, not swift
@@starlucanyaart Youre so annoying and it's important you know.

Taylor sent me here. you too? I'm an 80s kid, I don't remember this song. But they are making some nice money today with all the swifitie clicks.
Listen to Annie Lennox version. That's the one I remember from back in the day.
They were not a mainstream band at all. You would have never heard them on the radio..maybe an independent college radio station.
I find a-ha vibes here :)
In all honesty, I'm not a Swiftie but I'm glad she referenced the song because Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile is one of the greatest vocalists ever & it was sad to see him playing the lottery.
80’s kid too. And I don’t know this song. But Taylor sent me. So here I am.
So I'm not alone, we are all here...Guilty as Sin!!
of course! i must do my research
I see what you did there! 😂
To the Swifties discovering this song, welcome!
Please do yourself a favor and listen to the entirety of Hats. It's an incredible album from start to finish.
It is, and I thank her for the introduction. Doubt I would have heard it otherwise. Loving this album.
And wow, the musical style of this song (tempo, bass line, chords, instrumentation) is so similar to that of "Fortnight," the opening song on Taylor Swift's new album. I think there may be some influence.
Finished binge-listening, I enjoyed it!!
100%.

"My boredom's bone deep
This cage was once just fine
Am I allowed to cry?"
To those of you that discovered this because of the Taylor Swift lyrics: her giving these guys a shout-out is one of the coolest things she's ever done (at least in my book).
The Blue Nile innovated so much. They have sadly become a footnote in popular music history. Their music can be a little challenging, but the technology and recording techniques they innovated in the 80s made a lot of modern music possible. True, they weren't the only ones, Thomas Dolby's work on Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen was another big deal in terms of digital and synth production, but The Nile made another giant leap with Hats.
Please don't let these guys' music die with your generation! They literally made the production techniques that Taylor herself has likely used possible! Even if the style isn't your cup of tea, it's worth giving them a shot just to show appreciation.
I am an 80s kid and thought I had not heard them. Saw it was referenced in one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs off the TTPD album. Turns out my husband who is also an 80s kid has a few songs in his insanely long 76 hour playlist and turns out I have heard them before. Very cool vibe this song.
I love this album. Glad she introduced me to it. Have listened to several songs now.

Nice touch. And such a great track too
Very very endearing to see how the old fans are welcoming the new visitors with so much zeal and incredible suggestions!! This is what music is about, sharing the joy and the experience! Also thanks to Taylor Swift, I just discovered an incredible new band!!
The amazing thing about music is that you never know when it’s gonna have a second life… This group certainly deserves a rebirth.
And with a swift stroke, Swifty introduces the world to one of the best bands of all time.
The Blue Nile history is complicated. But for some of us, we have known about this for 40 years. They don't exist anymore. Paul Buchanan has a voice that makes grown men weep. I still remember Tinseltown in the Rain when it first came out. Which, for you newbies, is better than this
Weep......more like Blub...I was in Saudi on a lonely suburb in Dammam..rooftop late 80's.. New Years Eve next block a lone piper struck up at midninght God I wept. 5 minutes later I hear the opening chords of someone nearby playing (a tape I guess) of Tinsel Town.... I wanted my mummy and my country. Scotland Finset getting a new audience Brilliant. Over The Hillside...give it a go........ hair standing here. Slange
Blue Nile don't need introducing. Been hailed as one of the best bands in the UK for decades....by anyone that's even remotely into music

I love when one artist sends you on a magical journey of hearing what you haven't heard, seeing what you haven't seen, and knowing what you didn't know. Memories shared, legendary.
Downtown lights reminds me of sitting atop a hillside overlooking the city as much as it reminds me of an early morning walk before daybreak. Peaceful, hauntingly beautiful.

I'm Scottish myself, and am old enough to remember buying this on vinyl when it came out. Classic album and a great, very much underrated band. The album this comes from 'Hats' is fantastic. This song is very much an ode to the city of Glasgow at night, in the rain. The city of my birth. So nice to see a new generation of potential fans!

Taylor Swift reminded me of something that I once loved but over all of the time and all of the space since then, I'd forgotten about... It feels familiar and comfortable like coming back home

As a Swiftie, thank you for the warm welcome : )
I went to school in Glasgow in the late 80s. I bought this record in '89 from the HMV on Argyle Street. It is a desert island disc for sure. I can't actually pit into words how important "Hats" is to me and my memory place.
When I hear these songs I'm 15 again, falling in love with that city and my first ever girlfriend, my best friend and Scotland.
Sublime.
Weird . . . Glasgow is one of those places whose name evokes incredibly complex images . . . and music. This music sounds like what a Glasgow band might do . . . like Prefab Sprout . . . I WISH I COULD ENTER YOUR MIND TO SEE THE MEMORIES YOU HAVE . . .

Drowning in the Blue Nile… yes!
This has to be the single most 1989-sounding song I’ve ever heard in my life……and it’s amazing!
I am amazed at how perfectly well you can sing guilty as sin over this song, the rhythm is perfectly in sync, i can see how taylor couldn't get it out her head and it became the soundtrack to the emotional affair she describes in her song
Blue Nile are a great band, who are underrated and under played, glad their getting the recognition they deserve 😊
Im a 33-year-old coaI miner. I was on night shift when i flicked the fm radio on and heard this song. I was out cleaning up on the dozer after a rain event around 2am. I never felt more alone but yet more comfortable and at peace. This song triggered emotions i thought i never had. Such a world putted song. I was first introduced to Blue Nile in October 1990 while at uni in New Brunswick, Canada. My friend gave me his copy of Hats, and I played the cassette on my Walkman while walking on the Tantemarr Marshes on a cloudy October afternoon. I feel the clean, cold air and hear the sounds of the wooden boards creeking under my hiking boots, and ducks flying overhead when I re-listen this song.
Taylor fans, listen to Blue Nile’s first album, A Walk Across the Rooftops. In particular, their song, “Tinseltown In The Rain”.
I listen to the whole album. I don't know if those sounds were common back then, but I think their sounds are very interesting and fun! At first listen, my fav is heatwave. It's gonna live rent free in my mind for some time👍

Amongst the most important albums ever created. The unrequited love and such beautiful longing in Paul Buchanan’s incredible vocals is utterly sublime. No other man sings with such openness, we other men could learn how to actually become men by listening to you. Still so relevant, so important and so loved...
Love for Paul Buchanan. A voice that aches with emotion.

One year ago, this weekend, this beautiful song played at our wedding reception, at a 1920's mansion in the heart of Chicago.
