It is always a good idea to use a wedge even if you have your crew pulling on the tree, this will prevent the tree from setting back if the tree is to much for your crew to pull over

So the house doesn’t get cleared of it’s residence? We do crane work all the time and the #1 safety rule is we clear out the building, things can go wrong and if they do the last thing you want is to have people in harms way.

Very lucky result. I'd have made the felling cut much shallower and much wider and then taken out the middle with a plunge cut leaving an uncut strap at the back and a much thicker hinge. Put in some wedges and then cut the back strap. The thicker, more open hinge will then stay intact and control the fall of the tree all the way down instead of snapping off completely as it did in this film.

I've seen these big cedar trees barber chair when cut, for those of you who don't know, it's when one or more longitudinal splits forms while cutting a tree down. Alder's are infamous for it. You can get caught and flung away, or the tree can just fall on you as the fall pattern becomes highly erratic and difficult to predict. To prevent this guys will wrap chains around the tree above where they're cutting. How can you tell which trees will or won't do this?

I'm not a professional tree guy. Though I love cedars and have been collecting them locally in Louisiana. Looks like you are in seattle, the architecture of the house, the color, and those western cedars have a small range. But the notch does not have to be that big does it. Isnt like 4 or 5 inches on a tree that size going to be sufficient? And what about the notch under the horizontal cut? And finally what about some wedges on the backside? My data is slow, all I see is a notch and a spinning loop on my screen loading the video maybe in 40 minutes. Edited next day. I see why a larger gap in the wedge is beneficial. Man I wish I had that tree for my saw mill. God that's a nice tree.

I once had a very old oak tree that was cracked and seemed to be likely to fall, so we arranged to have it cut down, my neighbor was furious that we would cut down a tree that might kill us, she almost went to court over it and yelled at the tree cutting company so much that they left and didn’t come back. Thankfully we moved away and never saw that neighbor, or the tree, again
