I'm Anita Sites. I'm a nurse practitioner. And my primary role is working with our living donor population. There's close to 20,000 people waiting for liver transplants in the United States, and there are just not enough deceased donor organs to supply all those people in need. Donors are, of course, the heroes of transplant, but living donors are especially special. They are giving of themselves in the most ultimate way, for no benefit for themselves. So the evaluation process is a really thorough one. You know it's not an overnight process. And we have to make sure that at height of our priority list is the donor’s safety and well-being. It's a commitment to the process. It's also a commitment to the recovery. And then we follow them for at least two years. So it's a commitment to that process as well. Donors are heroes. They don't always want to be recognized as heroes, but they are heroes. And that's how we get to come to work every day and take care of them and to transport people and to save their lives. Multidisciplinary team members
meet with each potential donor. There's a ton of blood work that we do to evaluate them, and then we really do extensive imaging of their abdomen. We do a CT scan, we do an MRI. So it's really a head to toe very thorough evaluation to make sure that no stone is unturned and that any risk that we find along the way that we're able to eliminate those risks, to really minimize the potential for negative outcomes for the donor or for complications. And then once a donor is approved for surgery, we really work with them to see what would work best in terms of their schedule and their life to be able to do this.
