  • I finished my 8 hour breast reconstruction surgery (aka DIEP) and wanted to share what you can expect the day after a double mastectomy.
I am not in much pain. Just a bit sore but it's manageable. I hope this is helpful in your preparation of your DIEP surgery.
If you have any questions, please leave them in the comment section and I will do my best to answer them.
    Thanks for watching!!!

I'm just beginning my journey. I have invasive-ductal-carcinoma, high grade, Nottingham grade 3, clinically stage 1 and triple negative. I have dense breasts and had an ultrasound then another one last Saturday with 8 biopsies. 😮 Not a single person, (there were 6 - actually 8 if you count me and my husband) could find the lump in my breast they really tried hard to find it and knew the location so be sure to NEVER skip a mammogram. I actually have 2 lumps. They are pretty close together with detrius in between which they're not sure what it is but it might be more cancer. I'm getting chemo first, then double mastectomy, then DIEP reconstruction a few months after the mastectomy. I'll be getting Keytruda at some point, I think it's after I finish chemo. Luckily for me my husband recorded all my appointments so I can listen to it all again because I'm still a bit overwhelmed, I was only diagnosed a week ago, not even a week yet it's been 6 days. Everything is moving really fast. I'm having my MRI this week coming up and getting my port. I still have to get heart function tests because of the Keytruda, I think or it might be the chemo. I will be getting the red devil plus something else. I was also checked to see if I might get CELLULITIS in my arm. I don't have the results yet but was told that if you could get cellulitis that there are steps they can take to prevent it, apparently once you get it there no helping you then, so anyone who is reading this should find out if they're suseptible to it before surgery. I am also waiting on my genetic testing. I am so glad I found you, you're very tiny and you managed a DIEP. My surgeon wondered if I had enough fat for the surgery. Trust me I'm like a moose in comparison to you. Now I'm sure I'll be able to get the procedure. I don't have big breasts and I'm almost a B. I don't want anything more than what I already have, ok... maybe I'm hoping for a whole B. 😂 Thank you for your videos, I'm binge watching them right now. 😊

Hello, my name is Stephanie I’m current in my breast cancer journey.. I just finished my 2nd round of chemo. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma stage 2b her2 positive.. I wanted to ask more about your surgery. I will be having a double mastectomy as well but having made any decision yet on reconstruction. You stated you had a cut across your abdomen, is that because you had tissue removed to put in your breast or did you have your ovaries removed since you tested possible for the gene. I know one of the option I have is removing fat/issue from my abdomen and thighs to be put in my breast. Again I’m not sure which way I will go implants or if I’ll just stay flat.. just interested in hearing from other women who’s been there. If you have any questions for me feel free to ask.. I’ve made videos of my journey but I’m not sure about uploading just yet. Thanks a lot for sharing your journey.

Hi Stephanie, I'm sorry you are on this journey but I am glad we connected. I had the DIEP surgery which after the double mastectomy, takes tissue from my abdomen to fill in my breasts. I didn't want to go the implant route so I chose this option but it's just one of many options out there. The surgeon actually cuts from hip to hip (in my case it goes a little bit more around the back), right above my pubic area so it can be hidden by underwear. Do let me know if you have any more questions. I wanted to post because I didn't find many women of color sharing this story and of course, our healing journey can look different.

Hi there. My surgery was around 6 hours which was what the surgeons told me. Anywhere from 6 to 8 hours depending on the work being done.
