Who is the ideal pilot for the Nova MENTOR 6?

  • Flybubble Paragliding reviews the Nova MENTOR 6, their new 'high B' or XC class paraglider. The sixth in a long tradition of Mentor gliders made to offer undemanding performance. Like the one before it, this is a Mentor. The performance comes from it being so calm, and so the pilot doesn't feel the need to interfere with the wing much.
    Nova Mentor 6 S (80-100kg) flown at 93kg.

    Many thanks for the review. I flew with Mentor4 for three years. There may be differences in performance but almost the same character as Mentor4. I have my first experience of flying in the thermik conditions, the first XC and my first competition experience with this wing.

    Really helpful review. This is the wing I'm thinking of getting to get back into the sport after a 15 year break. Will be in touch.

    Great review as always. I really appreciate all these videos you guys put out. One thing though: as a relatively new pilot who hasn't flown a lot of different gliders, it is sometimes hard to make comparisons between gliders based on these reviews. For example, here the Mentor is found to be a relaxing and calm wing. But that's within the "high-B" class, right? For me it's difficult to picture how would this compare with wings of say "low-B" to "mid-B" range. Is it actually more demanging? Or if it's not, what makes it a "high-B"? Just the behavior under collapses etc.?
    And I know, the answer is always "do a test flight". But it's not always so easy.

    • @jonmayo7279
      @jonmayo7279 Před 5 lety +1

      You can look at the EN homologation sheet of the glider. There it's described what the "B" stands for each situation (asymmetric collapse, deep spiral...). Finally a "high B" it's a glider which has lots of "B" on the homologation EN test. Sometimes you can run into a "C" glider which has nearly all of its homologation maneuvers noted as "A" and just one or two "C" (sigma 8) thus making it a "C" glider.
      Cheers from the swiss alps!

      @zakit Před 5 lety +2

      @@jonmayo7279 Indeed that's how you determine what is A, B or C. But nowadays we need to go further than the certification tests when talking of low, mid and high categorization, because they're nowhere to be found in the certification procedure.
      The certification deals with predetermined events and certain parameters of recovery from those simulated events under calm conditions.
      In that respect of low, mid or high, it has to do with the character of the glider, the nervousness, the agility, the feedback, all those aspects that make the glider behave like it does.
      For example, the Mentor 6 is a "high" B. On this review it is said that the Mentor 6 dampens a lot of the pitching, we can conclude that it will give enough margin to correct before a frontal collapse.
      If we compare to the initial Gin Carrera, which was meant to be a C but got classed as B, therefore it's also a "high" B, but it was famous for being much more dynamic and edgy.
      So, even within the pseudo sub category, the mileage may vary.
      So it is important to take a careful reading of what the manufacturer says about it and peer reviews like these, to understand the character of a wing and what best serves our individual needs.
      In conclusion it is my understanding that this is a relaxing and calm in regards to the high B space. It is said clearly that it is not a glider for beginners. So, not so calm and relaxing that a student would be comfortable every time under dynamic conditions.

    would be carefull reviewing a wing like this and making it sound so dull! i have the mentor 5, and as stable and beautiful as it is it still reacts just like the top high b gliders in siv menouvers. you are flying slow and boring uk conditions by the way, put a not to strong pilot who thinks he or she is a good pilot on the mentor in strong alps conditions and they will have a very different time to what you have reviewed. anyway good review, it is an easy stable wing, but it is not as dull as greg is putting it out to be

      @@petersplumbing29 Especially in the high b class a comparison makes a lot of sense, because many pilots fly in this class.
      Maybe something like:
      Mentor 6 (Nova)
      Maestro (Phi)
      Rush 5 (Ozone)
      CrossCountry (Skyman)
      But a report about the Rush 5 would also just be great!

    • @flybubblecarlo
      @flybubblecarlo Před 2 lety +1

      The MENTOR 6 is definitely a high B, not a mid B, wing. It's just this review that makes it sound that way, to be honest. I (Flybubble Carlo) think plenty of MENTOR 6 pilots don't find it quite a dampened as this review suggests. The pilot demands of the MENTOR 6 are at the lower end of the high B class, but it's not a mid B wing. It's an excellent high B wing for pilots who prefer a reassuring feel and lower pilot demands - who maybe fly a lot in places where the conditions are strong and turbulent e.g. mountains, hot dry countries - but not so much for pilots who prefer their wing to be more nimble and give more feedback.

    • @AMJB100000000
      @AMJB100000000 Před 2 lety

      @@flybubblecarlo that’s what I thought, it sounds safer..
      My low b buzz z5 feel sluggish to start a turn even though I fly 2kgs over, so I’d like my next glider to be more nimble I guess you loose some passive safety, but I feel like it would give me a better chance to hold onto those smaller thermals..
