You’ll see that quite a few actors in Goodfellas later became cast members for The Sopranos. 27 to be exact. Some had very small roles in Goodfellas but you’ll recognize them it down the road you watch the film again after your Sopranos journey. I also highly recommend the audiobook of Wise Guys which the film is based on. Fills in a lot of back story and is a bit grittier. A lot grittier. Like that scene where he is beaming car windows and setting them on fire was a rival Cab Company that was cutting into Paulie’s territory. Little things like that. It’s fantastic.

    Trivia:
    1. Ray Liotta (Henry Hill) was previously on this channel in the "Field of Dreams" reaction as Shoeless Joe Jackson. In addition to Cape Fear, Robert De Niro was Shadow in Backdraft.
    2. David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, obviously used this movie as inspiration. 27 different actors appear in both projects, most notably Lorraine Bracco.
    3. Nominated for six Oscars in 1990: Best Picture, Best Director (Martin Scorsese), Best Supporting Actor (Joe Pesci), Best Supporting Actress (Lorraine Bracco), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. Joe Pesci won in the Supporting Actor category.
    4. Editor Thelma Schoonmaker has done most of Scorsese's films since they were in NYU film school together.
    5. Two famous lines are still well-quoted from this movie: Henry's opening line, "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster," and the "You think I'm funny?" line. Much of the "You think I'm funny?" scene was improvised by Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta.
    6. Martin Scorsese's parents appear in cameos - his mother plays Tommy's mother, and his father plays Vinnie.
    7. The American Film Institute (AFI) named this as the second-greatest gangster film of all time, ahead of Godfather Part II and only behind the first Godfather movie.
    8. Scorsese, De Niro, and Pesci all previously collaborated together in Raging Bull, ten years earlier.

Not only did Scorsese's parents have a cameo, but when the Hills agree to turn state's evidence and enter witness protection, the federal agent with whom they're negotiating ("I don't wanna go anywhere that's cold.") is played by the actual federal agent who handled the real Henry Hill case, and who had that same conversation with them for real.

The scene where Tommy is hitting Billy Batts is shot really weird, so it's easy to miss what happened with the gun. Tommy beat Batts with the revolver so hard the gun broke apart, which is what actually happened in real life. The thing where he wasn't dead and him getting stabbed in the trunk really happened too, but they didn't shoot him, that was just for dramatic effect in the movie.

Tommy didn’t need to be a made man. He wasn’t emotionally stable enough & he’d have tore the whole family down. Tho my favorite line of his is: “There’s a leg! There’s a wing!!! Henry, Waddya like the legs or the wings!!! Or do ya go for the ol’ hearts & lungs?!??” He was a twisted SOB 🤯

Are there many Godfather spoilers in The Sopranos? I seem to recall the characters regularly referencing them by number (1, 2, 3). Hopefully your Patrons make sure you've seen them all before any potential spoilers come up in the show.

What software do you use to edit out the music? It's great! It is like the music is never there! It even edited out the gunshot sounds when Tommy (Joe Pesci) was shooting stacks and heard the hammer clicking and the shell casings landing on the floor!

The Sopranos is my favorite of anything. It's a comedy that accidentally became the best drama of all time.
Season 1 is rough though and even I didn't like the first 5 episodes. Season 1 episode 6 is where it hooked me.

Okay, this might be the 50th time "seeing" this. They never explain why Jimmy isn't held just as accountable as Tommy for Billy's murder. My favorite scene is when they stop by Tommy's for a shovel, that actress who plays his mother is exactly like my grandmother. I think it may be Martin Scorcese's mother

Tommy was a loose cannon and Jimmy was a top earner. But Tommy was considered to be part of the real "La Cosa Nostra" due to his Sicilian bloodline. Therefore Tommy Knew better than to kill another Sicilian made guy.

@@laudanum669 I suppose...although I kind of feel like that would make Jimmy more vulnerable to the vendetta. Being a top earner yet not immune from retribution(?) Anyway, always a good watch.

*Also, when Henry was locked up and Paulie came home, he had an affair with Henry's wife Karen. One night, Tommy beat up Karen and tried to rape her. That was the last straw for Paulie with Tommy and he decided to finally give the order to have him killed.
