100% of what is listed here and what Scotty said is in every single owners manual (except for trannies). in essence just RTFM and live by it. It will matter less about the model you choose and more about proper upkeep to prolonged the lives of vehicles. Toyota and Christler and every other manufacturer know that the owner of a dependable car will come back again some day so they tell you how to make it dependable. Might as well just do it...

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide Před 5 lety +3

A dirty air filter shouldn't affect mpg or air/fuel ratio in a modern car- it'll just limit power. The biggest restriction in the intake is the throttle. If the filter is dirty, you just open the throttle a little more and- boom...you get the same air pressure in front of your intake valves. Air fuel ratio is maintained by the O2 sensor and mass air flow sensor, which measures mass flow, not volume.

Dear Scotty, one of your last videos said change your oil your self. I live in Thailand and have an Isuzu pickup and a Corolla plus two scooters. I fully agree with you about changing oil and filters (oil and air) by my self. Why? My first Forza 300cc scooter I went to the Honda dealer to have the oil and filter changed after 1,000 km as required they did not have the filter but they told me it was not important. Bull after a break in of the engine it is the most important time to change an oil filter as it accumulates the metal of the engine as it breaks in. So I left the scouter there until they had the filter and then picked it up. Then when my brake pads wore out again they said it was ok and I said NO! I left the scooter there until they had the pads to replace them. If I had continued driving it would have ruined the disks. Since then I do all of my normal maintenance my self. Scotty you are a star... Yes I knew this already but I only share my info with my friends and you do so world wide!

Hi Scotty, all the information you provide is Great and easy to follow for all drivers. I am as old or older than you are and my vehicles regardless of brand have all lasted my well over 200,000 miles before any engine or transmission problems developed. My 1982 Dodge 318ci 2 wheel drive Ramcharger has 498,000 miles and still has original engine and trans running strong after towing my 2,000 pound boat 25 times 1,350 miles each way to the Fl Keys.. My wife's 93 T-Bird 5.0 has 200,000+ miles and engine runs great. Unfortunately even with a few trans. fluid and filter changes the Ford AOD trans is on it last legs and I will pull it and rebuild it myself soon since while 1,2,3 and reverse are ok the OD band is shot.
If is far, far , far less costly to maintain them well than pay for repairs or new replacement vehicles. As usual it is always about the Nut behind the wheel (The steering wheel) .

It's also very important to change your PCV. I change mine around every 35,000 kms and my 2015 Caravan has nearly 250,000 km's and I've never had any issues with it's 3.6 V6 Pentastar. Then there's my brother-in-law who has a 2014 Equinox and around 170,000 kms his engine blew the rear seal and it cost a fortune to repair. While the Equinox was in the shop, they found out his PCV was so badly clogged up that it eventually lead to blown seals in the engine!

Thanks for the advice about changing the PCV valve. I have not even thought about that part being replaced. I have approximately 105,000 miles on my 2007 Honda CRV and run great. To be on the safe side, I’m going to be ordering a this part very soon, it looks like a very easy install.

Well, if you bought a used car, which you plan to keep.
First of all check the timing belt, and my sugestion is changing it and any other belt on that car. That is like the first thing you should do on SH car.
      Engine oil.
      Breaks, and all about it.
Transmision oil, and pretty much everyting which has oil in it.
Check for rust, stop and repair where is spoted.
This would be the things you should check, and replace even if ex owner did 3 days before he sold the car.
NEVER, EVER, Use Aftermarket parts in your engine, or anything that has to do with steering.
So, the list depends, by how used is the car. And belive me! ALWAYS! 100% a sh car will always need some repairs, which the dealer or whoever sold it didn't said, and most of the times those repairs are not cheap.
So before thinking of what you should change in a sh car, you should know something about cars, or someone who does before considering buying a sh car.

Hey Scotty. Sometimes I wonder if the OBD system is a good or bad thing. Since it’s constantly trying to optimize engine settings it seems that as the engine wears it would tend to place more strain on a wearing engine. With carburetors and ignition systems they tend to detune away from peak performance which might lessen strain and save the mechanicals of the aging engine. What do you think about that? I think those shut down at stop systems are infuriating. Not only does it increase engine wear it also shortens battery and starter life. You can’t replenish the charge fast enough to prevent it from depleting and shortening battery life. I don’t know how long they’ve used it but as things age it’ll take more and more cranking for it to restart. I’m waiting for some problem to develop where it restarts when it shouldn’t or just simply won’t restart.

Something worth keeping in mind when buying replacement auto parts is that many parts are not made by the car manufactures but by companies like AC Delco or Denso. If you can find out what company actually made a particular part you can often buy an exact replacement for far less than getting a car company brand. In the last year, I needed a headlight switch, ignition coil, and an emission hose. I found numbers on the parts and googled them(there are also cross-reference books), the headlight switch was competitively priced so I bought a Motorcraft, the coil was made by Denso and sold for half as much as Motorcraft, the hose was no longer sold by Ford but had been made by Gates and was still available from Gates. Over the years I have saved money and succeeded in getting exactly the correct part many times doing this(recently a friend needed a heater valve for his 1965 Plymouth, $75.00 from a restro parts Company $12.50 from AC Delco).

@ISSA VIBEZ On GM cars, aftermarket can be an upgrade from a factory part and make the car much more reliable. (Not cheap made, but more mid-range without getting into the stupid hype marketed stuff.) Just switching those plastic engine parts to metal for instance.

When it comes to electronics, the best stuff is made in japan. The bad stuff is made in china. If you have a choice and can tell where it's made, always choose electronics made in Japan over those made in china. The problem is it's getting harder and harder to source the good parts as more and more of them are made in china because everybody wants cheap. And to make matters worse there are lots counterfeit parts that are labelled and market as higher quality parts but are cheap fakes.

I'd say any car that can tell you the date, average consumption and average speed and has adjustable headlights basically if the area in between your rev counter is a screen, i would consider that modern. old fashioned cars had no trip computers, but they did have much more basic computers and sensors than the newer ones that beep at you if you aren't wearing a seatbelt
