Adjust that slide as you change through the harmonic partials......Er...WHAT?
This video hopes to unravel the mystery of our beloved trombone slide.
With three playalong videos, giving you a mighty low brass drone to aid your improvement through all seven positions.
Remember: each position needs a bigger distance between partials!

A fine demonstration of the need to correct slide positions depending on which harmonic the note is. That is absolutely what we experience playing the trombone. But from theoretical view we know, that tuner devices are adjusted to the equal tempered tuning . So any fifth would be required lower by the tuner than the perfect/pure fifth .
So my conclusion is, that the harmonics on brass instruments are not exact harmonics
    with frequency relations 2: octave, 3: octave + fifth ,4: two octaves , 5: two octaves + third : 6: two octaves + fifth 7; two octaves + minor 7th .
I assume it depends on the geometry of the trombone's tubes and the bell.
Octaves are normally very good in tune on my trombones . On small bore trombones the 7th harmonic is often flat/low .
The only trombone I have with the first harmonic (the octave auf the root/fundamental ) too high is my bass trombone (Yamaha YBL 612R) . But better to high than to low ;-)
So, absolutely right ! Every trombone player has to find out , to learn and to remember what not has to be adjusted how much in which direction on the instrument which is used,

      Right on!
By the way: the octave above pedal B flat is the ‘first partial’ (Erster Oberton auf deutsch?)

The reason your lower tones are going out of tune (sound of the 5th is too wide) is because the adjustments have be to larger as your entire trombone becomes longer. Just as a tuba's adjustments are greater than on a trumpet, your adjustments also have to be greater as you go lower. The exercise is a good one as long as you can hear the tuning correctly.

I already do this, but I still found this video to be a great lesson! Thank you for sharing! What are your views on using T1 instead of 6th, and T2 instead of 7th? I regularly use T1 instead of 6th, and only use 6th when necessary due to the slide positions of the notes before or after. And I always use T2 instead of 7th.

      Thanks for your input.
Ultimately, we need to be ready to go with all available positions. The valve plays quite differently to 6th/7th position.
It’s really a good idea to keep an open mind and be flexible in this regard.
It’s an interesting idea to also do these slurs with V1/V2 occasionally- I imagine many players only go down the slide.
