  • Welcome to our build series for our 4” scale Burrell DCC Road Locomotive Traction Engine kit by Steam Traction World of Daventry, England. This is supplied as a series of 30 fully machined kits to build a fully operational steam traction engine. Each kit includes all parts, hardware detailed packing list, assembly diagrams and instructions. Kits arrive approximately one per month. Parts must then be cleaned, fitted, painted and assembled using standard workshop hand tools and a few basic power tools. No machining on a lathe or mill are necessary.
When complete, the engine will be 33” wide, 83” long, and 48” high with a weight of 1650 lbs. The boiler is 10.5” diameter built of welded steel boiler plate and designed and tested for an operating pressure of 180 PSI.
The engine features a crankshaft driven water pump and steam injector. Stephenson’s valve gear, rubber tires, an operational governor, working rear differential. It has a three speed transmission and an axle mounted winch drum. A steam siphon, blower, and whistle are also included. It is capable of carrying 2 adults and can pull about 5 tons.
Our intention will be to show the unboxing and photos of all parts included in each kit. We will highlight each assembly step in order with a combination of still photos, video and time lapse. In the case where the same task is repeated, we will show that task only once to save time. Tasks such as removing mill scale, deburring, sanding and cleaning parts, painting and linings will only be demonstrated in this video but will be common tasks throughout most kits.
In this installment we will be constructing Kit 3- Smokebox.

I have just watched you build the smoke box kit and it was just as I found it. I am about to start the rear wheels have you a video of these kits out.

The video for the rear wheels is nearly ready. Probably will finish it sometime next week. I still have a couple more coats of paint to do on the right wheel. The video will not show them lined as that will probably not happen for a few more months.

Can I recommend you make up a heatproof baffle for the front door, I have been told it helps protect your lovely paintwork on the brass rings. I am planning to use a ceramic board in between. 😀 I’ve shared to the group.

Thanks, I've seen this mentioned other places too. My plan is to add something once I have the other brass casting to install. If I think of it at the time, I'll perhaps add a clip of that assembly too.
