Fun fact for you guys. Did you know that John Landis was a PA/stunt double on this movie and during his time on production came up with the idea and wrote the script for An American Werewolf In London. After he had witnessed a gypsy burial ritual. Who knew that 10 years, that film would become a horror cult classic.

Moriarty: "It's a piece of junk!"
As with a lot of the rest of this movie, there's some accuracy to what he's complaining about, because despite its reputation, the Tiger was actually quite unreliable, with them being more likely to breakdown rather than be destroyed by the enemy, due to them being rushed into service with underpowered engines and transmissions.

Good analysis but the moment when Telly Savana’s and the German get the same view of the guys in the minefield is deliberate. It is not a reuse of a shot on the cheap. It is the fact that playing dead and being dead look the same. I was 7 years old when this came out and I have seen it at 12 and 20 and 24 and 35 and 42 and 48 and 52 and 60. This has been brilliant every time.

Great breakdown guys I can tell you have mad respect for this film. One of the best and you’re right there’s nothing else much like it. These little factoids weren’t mentioned so I’m not sure if you know about it or not. Moriarity, Oddball’s, sidekick and mechanic, was played by Gavin McLeod. He was big in American television. Having major roles in both the ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ show and ‘The Love Boat’. “Colonel” Colt was actually two star General Colt. He was played by Carol O’Connor. This is the role that earned Carol O’Connor his iconic TV role as Archie Bunker in the 70s TV show ‘All In the Family’. And of course, Telly Savalas went on to his police detective TV show ‘Kojak’. Even Don Rickles had a TV show at one time.

There are many interesting aspects in this film, at that time WW2 was relatively still relevant and more wars were going on, it is good the approach they took for this mixing many genres but in a light-hearted kind of adventure style, is indeed well made with a great cast and deserve more recognition as a great film of the '70s

Thanks for doing this. Nice, deep dive review.
Coincidentally, I just watched this movie, one of my favorites throughout my entire 67 year life, but hadn’t watched in at least 20 years. I have it in a two-fer Blu-ray set which also includes another Brian Hutton/Clint Eastwood movie, WHERE EAGLES DARE. Loved it as much, if not more than I ever have. And then two days later Donald “Oddball” Sutherland dies. Sutherland’s Oddball steals every scene he’s in and practically steals the whole movie. And that’s saying something considering the rest of the cast of scene-stealers: Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carrol O’Conner, Stuart Margolin, Harry Dean Stanton, Len Lesser, Jeff Morris and Gavin MacLeod.
I probably have seen this movie a few dozen times or more one my life. But this last viewing was very meaningful to me, and I was so appreciating Sutherland’s performance, and then two days later, he dies.
After I watched the movie, I wanted to re-watch The Critical Drinker’s review of it, and watched a few other reviews. And I think that’s why your review came up as a recommended video.
So many positive waves, man! Rest in Shalom, Oddball (among his many other great roles)! May your positive waves in your work always bless us.

That trivia about Donald Sutherland almost dying during filming really aged badly.
The markings on the "Tiger" are from the 1st SS Panzer Division "Adolf Hitler", who were supposed to be fanatical even by SS standards, so it's highly unlikely that the commander would've agreed to help, at least not in a real situation. It's not impossible, because the Nazis were notorious for looting, but I doubt they'd agree to rob a bank, especially along with Allied troops.
Interesting to note that it wasn't uncommon for each side to use each other's weapons and vehicles, even their tanks. But they'd soon paint their own insignias on the bodywork to avoid being shot at by their own side. I've even seen things like Shermans with iron crosses painted on them in old WWII pics!
