  • Shutters Studio Residency: The Second Episode from Hamburg’s Synthesizer Heaven
Shutters and Kommerz Records are proud to present Sofie & Speckman on the second episode of Shutters Studio Residency, a new video series showcasing songs created in a bootcamp with a breathtaking selection of analog sound machines at Synthesizer Studio Hamburg. Local hero Speckman meets Vienna-based multi instrumentalist and artist Sofie Royer, forming a duo that could not be more different.
The two became friends after Sofie DJed at the same party in Hamburg in 2017 and invited Speckman to play in Vienna soon after. Later Speckman joined Sofie as a guest on her NTS radio show “SOS” before their musical liaison resulted in their first joint single "Leave" (Public Possession, 2021). Since Sofie & Speckman had only worked remotely with each other until then, their Shutters Studio Residency brought the duo together for a first live session. The result is called "Cheerleader”, a new wave track drained in heavy synth production with raw vocals by Sofie. Through Shutters you will experience the original version behind the “Cheerleader” club mix, which dropped on Public Possessions last year.
Sofie, a classically trained violinist, got her foot in LA’s vibrant hip-hop and beat scene through an internship at the legendary Stones Throw Records. Her violin can be heard on releases from artists like Anderson Paak, Knxwledge and Mndsgn. Over the past years she developed her very own sound and released two albums as a singer-songwriter with Stones Throw. After the release of her self-produced debut album “Cult Survivor” she wanted to incorporate different sounds into her music. Speckman's house and breakbeat style, which he elaborated as resident DJ at legendary Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, seemed like an interesting terrain for her. Speckman's distinct electronic productions and creative cosmos were most recently showcased through his debut album "Beautiful Breakdance" (Pudel Produkte, 2021) as well as his collaborations with artists such as Sophia Kennedy, Erobique and Synkro.
Shutters Studio Residency invites talented artists to spend a few days at Synthesizer Studio Hamburg, run by German engineer legends Sunny Vollherbst and Frank Husemann (Tocotronic, Tomte, Blumfeld). Located in the brutalist Feldstraßen bunker, the studio offers a unique collection of around 30 vintage synthesizers, organs and pianos, as well as 16 drum machines and beat boxes.
Shutters Studio Residency and partnering label Kommerz Records are providing this platform for artists to push the boundaries of their sound, explore the possibilities of vintage analog synthesizers and present their creative creations.
