  • This clip features Warren Oates, Peter Fonda, R.G. Armstrong and Wes Bishop. The previous evening, Oates and Fonda witnessed a human sacrifice at a satanic ritual and they're on the way to the crime scene with the police.
The cops soon direct the topic of conversation to the negative impact generally experienced when hippies and / or satanists move into an area. The cops are played by R.G. Armstrong (the sheriff, in the passenger seat) and Wes Bishop, the deputy at the wheel. Wes Bishop co-wrote the screenplay for this feature and was originally hired as the director, but was fired after only a few days when the studio was unhappy with the footage he'd shot.
Are these two lawmen way too gleefully psychotic, or what?
Note that at the beginning of the clip, R. G. Armstrong refers to the officer driving the car behind them as "Harry Dean," surely a reference to Harry Dean Stanton, a friend of both Peter Fonda and Warren Oates. A year or two earlier, Armstrong and Stanton both appeared in Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid.
Also worth knowing: in one of Race With The Devil's first scenes, Warren Oates calls one of his employees "L. Q." which is clearly a reference to character actor L. Q. Jones.
