- Join us as we visit the delightful village of Chilham nestled in countryside on the outskirts of Canterbury in Kent.
We explore the village centre and discover the secrets of its past, from catching a glimpse through the iron gates at the spectacular Chilham Castle to exploring the grounds of an unusual looking church.
Wander the winding lanes lined with historical buildings and one of the cutest post offices we have ever seen and then on past a field of sheep to the old Chilham Mill. This hidden gem in the heart of Kent is sure to leave you wanting more.

My mother in law used to be the cook at Chilham Castle many years ago. Chilham is a lovely little village.

My grandparents met in the castle in 1905, he installed the first electricity to the Castle and she was working there. I love visiting Chilham.

I visited Chilham Castle Gardens a few years ago. They sometimes have open days, so it's worth checking their website. I couldn't go inside the castle, but the gardens were lovely. As you walk around the grounds, you can still see part of the original Norman castle, which you can't see from the entrance, where you were. And then when you leave the castle, you're in one of the prettiest villages in the area!

Some time ago you asked about places you should visit. It's unbelievable, but with Chilham you have actually visited all of my suggestions (even if it was probably not because of me😂 ). Thank you so much! What you really missed in Chilham were the cream tea and sandwiches in Shelly 's Tea Rooms. They are really great. Thanks again for your fantastic work.

@@JJExtra If so, I have another suggestion for you. I was very fond of Rye. It's a good hour's drive from you and is a really nice little town. As a dog owner, I was very pleased that dogs were allowed in the local church. As a result, our family was finally able to visit a building together without someone outside having to look after the dog. The castle, just a few meters from the church, is also worth a look.
Chilham is a beautiful little village, I really like the half timbered houses! Yes, the Woolpack is Emmerdale’s pub. Jason, It was funny when you spoke to the sheep and they stopped and looked at you! The sound of falls any creek, River is enchanting, love listening to them.
I think I found new friends in those sheep 😂 such a beautiful place but we need to return when the tea room is open 🤤
I'm lucky enough to live her. You missed out on Mountain Street and tons of others ! It's usually rather busy and yes, most of us live in the pub,:-)

Interesting fact, there is a tunnel under the square from the church to the castle. This was for the rich castle dweller to gain sanctuary in the church way back.
Elephant House is named as such because elephants were kept there in the 1800s. I toured the garden and there are archways that housed them but they are bricked up now.
What a gorgeous town. So hard to imagine living somewhere like that. I called the church a castle church just before Jason said it looked like a castle. That train was definitely a bit fast to wave at :-)

Why describe Chilham as a Secret Cotswold Village in Kent? Surprise, surprise, Kent is FULL of very lovely villages, and the North Downs are just as beautiful as the Cotswolds.
Chilham has a lot of my family history in it my great uncle had a butchers in chilham which my nan grandad and uncle ran it's now Thompson house and Goldup lane is not far from chilham.
