I love wood, and when I see you cut the ugly off the outside to expose the beauty on the inside, my heart fills with joy.
The beauty that lays within a tree is a wondrous sight for the heart to see ❤️❤️
From the bottom of this Yankee from Massachusetts heart... I have to tell you, your work is SO SATISFYING to watch. I’m a 40 year auto shop owner that has recently discovered woodworking. You’re an inspiration to me! Keep filming and I’ll keep watching
I am not much of a woodworker, just make walking sticks and canes out of natural fall from trees in the Galilee forests, oak, carob, pine, acacia. But your videos I love. Tree grain is one of God's great works of art. And your videos take my mind off of life's silliness. And any man who cares for his cats must be a good fellow.
Peace and Blessing

Amazing lumber once the daggy exterior was removed. Thanks for sharing Nathan. cheer, Don from South Australia.
Nice video, that old tree was given a second chance on life, very well done🙋🏻♂️
I'm a shop teacher in Wisconsin. Kids are learning virtually right now. Your videos are keeping me sane. I love the production quality and all the information you pass along. Excellent work!!
Good morning in Philly and woke-up to another awesome video. 😎 thanks
What a fabulous voice - love the accent
You will love that edger ... it does a great job and saves a lot of time of not doing it on the mill.
Old dead red oak. What wonderful stuff. Hard to find through commercial sources. Nice to see you make some available.
That spalted red oak is BEAUTIFUL. I would love to have some scales of that to make knife handles. 💖 I bet that there are custom guitar makers who would love a couple of slabs of it too. 💖
“What else you gotta do?” Good point!
That log is just like some folks and life. " May be ugly on the outside, but it's what's inside that counts. ". Lol😸
Great video! Nathan, don't put that scrap on the burn pile! Burn that Red Oak into hit goals, band you will never have as tasty chicken, pork, butts, turkey, etc. When grilling, throw some Red Oak chips or small chunks onto the hot charcoal. Unparalleled flavor from Red Oak!
You've definitely got some good timber from this log! Nice one!
Love every video you do what a lifestyle 🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳👍👍👍
Based on what I've seem with Oaks, if the bark falls off fairly quick after the tree dies, that old log beneath the sapwood can often be a lot better than one would expect.
Added bonus of trimming down those poplar boards: ready made stickers for your lumber stacks! My grandfather used to say that when he ran out of stickers, it was time to move inventory.
You know Nathan, sawing these logs often remind me of people. They may seem rough on the outside but inside there is beauty to behold. It's a lesson to not judge a book by its cover as we shouldn't judge each other by what we see on the outside. Indeed another Christmas and I Thank You Kindly Nathan! Blessing to you and your Family! DaveyJO in Pa,
Wow. Some of the video perspectives you think of are amazing. Also like the tunes
Great spalting!!
Great salvage there and a beautiful grain, too. You do know your stuff.
Nathan, A friend of mine is giving me 3 10-ft long, 26 inch diameter Red Oak logs. He just wants a 3
inch slab for a bench. This video was perfectly timed. Looking forward to slabbing those logs in two weeks.....
Wow Nathan , one look at that red oak and you would normally not give it a second glance!!. Good bit of spalting. One look at that end and you would think “yep, that’s firewood!” It just goes to show that you can leave it for years and you can still get some great lumber out of it. Nice video Nathan. Love your videos as there is nothing else to watch while we are locked down again!! Take care and be safe. Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧🌲🌲🌲🌲👍👍👍
Very nice job. I love getting a log and cutting it on my mill to see what's inside of it. Can't wait to get my shop built to find out what I can build with it.
You and me both! Hopefully I'll get my mill and have my shop built by mid next year but can't say for sure (which drives me bonkers).
My kitchen countertops are all made butcher block style from spalted oak blown over in my back yard...the look is stunning.
I've never seen spalted oak like that. Would look great coming off my lathe. Great stuff!
NATHAN, that is just like the "wild" cherry we have around here, it rots from the outside in!! when ever i stumble across a dead down cherry i check to see just how " rotten " it is, a lot of times i hit the "jack pot" and able to use the chain saw mill to cut some nice useable lumber out of them! thank you another great video
Love the video. Looking forward to see if you quarter saw your half. Really amazing grain.
Good looking stuff from that old log!
Got a lot of buildup under your mill..
Dang! That is a beautiful oak inside!!
I agree with you on the 4 degree blades. They handle notty pine better than most.
You have lors of fun tools. Very envious
That is some beautiful oak.
I REALLY want to see a full video of the burn pile bonfire! (If you don’t mind making a video of it...)
You live in a lovely spot.
I enjoyed this video👍 some people may not realize how long it took you to "run down to the burn pile" all those camera angles and drone shots, and editing. ....oh just to drive to the burn pile drop the load and come back to the shop😊👍
Nice saw
That must be a mighty nice bonfire pit to stand by. Given how dry it here in the Rockies, a bonfire would be nice..
You need to take that stihl down to your local saw shop and have them turn it up a little bit! That saw is capable of much higher performance without cutting down its life span much! Nice saw!!
Good evening from St John Parish, Louisiana 09 Nov 20.
Daniel from Arms Family Homestead sent me over. Looks like he’s helping you get across the 100,000 subscriber mark.
Good eyes to see what others do not and making good timber out of rejected logs.
W-O-W, I was anxious to hear your comments on that spaulted slab. I loved it! I was imagining that resined up and used as a coffee table or counter top!---I was happy to see the maple tree's haircut! Kinda punk, kinda bonzai, left in place!
My spalted oak slabs are ear-marked for electric guitar bodies. I just need to get a shop set up, and that is probably going to take a couple of years. :(
@@pulaski1 How would you address the finish? Kept clear, to show the natural design?
@@alanatolstad4824 With spalted timber, IMO it's the only way to do it - maybe with a slight rimburst, so darkened, not blackened, around the edge.
I would like to try to get one to look like this (which is maple): czcams.com/video/6MoMmh6mgk0/video.html Jump ahead to 19 minutes to see the polished result.
@@pulaski1 I watched the part 2 and part 3. Great work...wouldn't have been my choice of colors, but skilled talent nevertheless!
Nice.
very nice
Wood turners would love 2x4x4 spalted wood for bowls.
You had a UFO in the sky as you drove away from your shop on your tractor lol.. Amazing wood. Thanks
well that old rotted red oak paid off in the end.
Now that's my kind of log
Closing in on 100k subs right quick like! Congrats brother! Keep the great content coming! 🌳 🪚 🪵
Dude.... you make me feel so good about the logs I have had sitting for some time.... just got my saw mill up and running and now cannot wait to get into them!
Thanks for what you do. Curious.. what model is your sawmill? Cost over $25k?
that would make a nice kitchen worktop
What type of scaper are you using to clean to saw dust of the log ????
You sound like a softer version of the iconic Steve Cross!
Wish I had your burn pile--it would keep me busy for a long time=birdhouses and such :)
Ive taken cuts like you took to the burn pile and made platters on the lathe.
I'd have liked the sawdust removed before the video of sawing that board so we could see the grain. I'd have liked some water on the last board you showed. I just love to see the grain of the wood. I think you got some good wood out of that log.
Brother, You'd lose your mind if you came up north here and got into some of this hard maple that's come out of the sugar woods. When these old trees that have been tapped for maple syrup they get vaines in them, Its some of the most beautiful wood there is. The whole you are here, I'll send you home with 3'and 4' Black Walnut that's been cut and the stump was dug up. You know whats hiding in that stuff 😉🍹🇺🇲
Bout time to light that burn pile. I'll be able to see that from here!
I was thinking if it gets much bigger I might see it in Missouri. : -)
your burn pile looks like my supply pile
Having been a Carpenter I could taste the Oak sawdust in the back of my throat while watching this, LOL!!!!!
I had an old red oak stump on my place , it was about 40 inches in diameter . Figure it was 10 years old or older , the stump . I got the bright idea that I could take my chain saw and cut down in the top and maybe it would rot quicker ,I could not believe how hard that wood was ,there were literally sparks flying and there was no metal in the stump . That was 30 years ago and some of that stump is still there .
That's a beautiful log from the outside, but I'm 10 seconds into it. I like to gamble when cutting logs
Look at that spalted wood!
Man...if I lived closer I'd DEFINITELY be talking to you about going through your burn pile. Looks like a lot of carveable wood.....
Recycling at its finest! How many good boards or bowls are discarded or burned as firewood?...
Question: with logs like this do you have concerns termites or invasive species may be in wood for applications?
Beautiful oak! I think I saw a UFO over the trees at 2:20, Nathan.👽
I had an oak tree fall this past week when we got a huge downpour of rain. It had been standing there dead for about 15 years. I thought if it ever fell it would just turn to dust when it hit. It has a couple of limbs holding it up. The bottom didn't split either. It fell over roots and all. Well, what was left of the roots.
When you saw a customer log, and find a gem, how do you keep track of the slabs (boards) for 6 mos/year of air drying, then kiln drying with other wood? How can you remember each piece?
I would love to have some of your scraps. I live in Bryson City, NC.
What is quarter sawing???? Thanks
Hi did you ever saw up any China berry?I new to this I am running an lt35 and cut up a crotch log yesterday it looks a lot like your walnut logs real hard .I live in southwest Ms.how can I find buyers for hard woods cut 2 inches thick.
The last cut you make shows a lot of water dripping from the following side of the balde. Is this the natural moisture of the wood or something else to do with the saw?
that was me hitting the blade with a lot of water, trying to keep the blade cool, dense wood heats up the blade,
OMG I saw the burn pile and my hands started itching. Surely something could be done with it? other than burning? Even if it is for heating homes in the winter? I know nothing of where you live, resource wise. I'm in Phoenix and as you know, it is hot.....this winter hasn't been very cold either. I love wood - it is so beautiful. Your analogy of Christmas gifts because you are the first one to see the grain is perfect. So lucky!
where do you find this _wonderful_ music ?
Nice spalt. Some electric guitar makers would dig on this [oake is a bit heavy for guitars but... maybe a top for a les paul a weird Les Paul but a cool one for the braver sort of builder] lol
seeing your burn pile made me sad. You are definitely wood spoiled haha I envy you.
