Baroque virtuosi, Il Giardino Armonico prove how exciting original instruments can be by clearing out the intellectual and sensuous ballast that work accumulates over the centuries to allow it to sparkle in its genuine colors. The musicians featured in Paul Fenkart’s captivating film are Giovanni Antonini (flute), Enrico 0nofi-i (violin), Vittorio Ghielmi (viola da gamba), Luca Pianca (lute) and Ottavio Dantone (harpsichord). Salzburg’s magnificent Mannerist pleasure palace at Hellbrunn provides evocative settings for their performances of rarely-performed works from the French-style baroque repertoire, written around the turn of the seventeenth century. This architectural masterpiece still boasts the enchanting gardens, mystic grottoes, water-powered figures, trick fountains and mechanical theatre that delighted its original visitors. In its park, there is also a natural stone quarry that was transformed into the ‘Steintheater’, a unique open-air stage. Viewers are plunged into the world of the baroque as I1 Giardino Armonico performs in locations around the palace in period costume. Members of Musica et Saltatoria are seen performing dances from the time.
The pieces played are by Jean-Philippe Rameau, whose harpsichord music is notable for its variety of texture, its originality of line and its boldness of harmony; Marin Marais, the central figure in the French bass viol school, whose compositions possess eloquence and refinement of line and richness of ornamental detail that perfectly display the qualities of this instrument; Antoine Forqueray, also a bass viol player who wrote music famous for its brilliant exploitation of the viol in contrast to Marais’ more graceful style; Robert de VisCe, the foremost guitar composer of the French Baroque who also wrote pieces for the lute and theorbo; and Georg Philipp Telemann, who composed in all the forms and styles current in his day, including French-style overture-suites and quartets. There is also a composition by Nicolas ChCdeville, one of the brothers in a family of French musette players, makers, and composers. This was so popular in its day that the publishers sought to enhance its status by attributing it to Vivaldi!
Director Paul Fenkart’s creative approach reflects Il Giardino Armonico’s dynamic and lively style.

Formidable de mélanger le concert en montrant que beaucoup de morceaux se dansaient à l'époque.
La sarabande est très étrange, il y a un côté tai-chi-chuan.
C'est un ravissement de vous voir danser la gavotte et le menuet.

The male dancer neutral facial expression while the two women dance the gigue is the expression of a little bit tired old master who has almost nothing more to learn in his art.
