Carpenters: Bob Messenger Interview 2016

  • A rare look at the legendary flute, sax man and bassist (live) for the Carpenters, Bob Messenger. In early '16, I recorded this interview at home for a tentative project I was working on. As this was not originally intended to be aired on radio or published as a podcast, the interview was not taped in a studio. Bob has not recorded any interviews to either of our knowledge since Karen Carpenter's untimely passing in February 1983, and whatever earlier interview(s) to which he may have contributed with the Carpenters would be considered extremely rare.
    I created this in a video timeline as I normally did with my radio show archive interviews for The Download (originally aired 2013-2014), and peppered in some occasional rare photographs that were mostly provided, courtesy of Bob and Joan Messenger.

      Suzanne... my heart goes out to you and to your mother Joan. I haven't spoken with either your mom or dad in a few years, but they were so enthusiastic and supportive. Your father taught me a lot through his music-and even more so through his humility. He contributed so much to the Carpenters' legacy. He truly did not know just how gifted he was. We mention him often in our new book "Carpenters: The Musical Legacy." Bless you!

    Being a Carpenter addict in my teens I grew up on Messenger, Strawn, Osborne, Peluso, Simms etc on the records, memorizing every note of those solos. What fantastic years. I still love singing that material going back to the first LP. The training from Richard’s music can’t be topped. Thanks for this interview. They’re almost all gone now, it’s so sad.

    I met Bob Messenger at a show a few years ago, and he loved talking about saxophones. The instant I mentioned that he had played with the Carpenters he said, "That was a long time ago" and completely shut down. I'm still grateful that I got to meet "The Doctor".

    • @terrycote8879
      @terrycote8879 Před 4 lety +9

      @Jarred Knox Two reasons for his not wanting to discuss his time with the Carpenters: non-disclosure agreements that prohibit his talking about the Carpenters personal business during their heyday; secondly, Karen's death devastated everyone that knew her. The memories may simply be too painful.

    • @terrycote8879
      @terrycote8879 Před 2 lety +4

      Actually NDAs do exist and can cover many things. Now please go back and re-read what I wrote; not wanting to discuss the Carpenters personal business regarding Karen's anorexia and how it affected the band, Karen's relationship with her mother or brother Richard. These were very sensitive topics for the duo. It's very likely his employment contract with the Carpenters and its terms were confidential too. I should also point that this is merely a supposition on my part.
      The loss of Karen was devastating to everyone who had the privilege of working with her. The memories are simply too painful and not for the consumption of others.
      I never said he was unable to discuss his own experiences with the band , just not the personal lives of the Carpenters themselves.

Thanks for the conversation.

    +DTR396 Thank you! And the remix you hear on "Guder" was pulled from the '00 Japanese release of "By Request". It was originally created in 1990, and can also be heard on a number of both imports as well as domestic releases (Anthology from Japan in 1997, Carpenters Best Volume 2, Carpenters Perform Carpenter, Essential Collection, GOLD, and Magical Memories Of The Carpenters). Hope this helps!

  • @DB-ub8cr
    @DB-ub8cr Před 6 měsíci +4

    Regarding the instrumentation, Karen's drumming was just as accomplished as her vocals. She's in fine form throughout the album. Richard's piano work is magnificent on the entire disc but it is especially brilliant here. On Masquerade, his sparkling piano and Bob Messenger's playful flute are as memorable as Karen's vocals. With these two men trading off on the break, it is another reminder of what great musicians the duo had working alongside them. Richard's skill as an arranger is often overlooked in light of his sister's contribution, but that's unfortunate. The man knows his stuff. The final vocal line by him punctuates the end of the song as the music trails off. As Karen and Richard were in their early to mid-twenties when they crafted this masterpiece, it becomes even more of an astounding work of art. Other producers and artists rightly took notice. Although George Benson made it a huge hit three years later, this Leon Russell composition has been recorded by over 140 artists. With more than 60 of these versions being released in the 21st century, it is now a modern American standard.

    Such a shame that the members of the Carpenters' music band like Bob Messenger were not more forthcoming in revealing details of the tensions between Karen and Richard and her parents and the band over Karen's anorexia and bulimia problem. So many behind- the-scenes stories undoubtedly have never been made public and sadly probably never will since most of the members of the Carpenters' music band are now sadly gone!

Carpenters really knew how to surround themselves with talent and not only talent, but talent that was lasting and dedicated to Carpenters even through years of world touring. Seriously, he had to corner Bobby and question him about Karen's Anorexia! That was very tacky and inexcusable. It was none of his , excuse my language, damn business! He went too far. You can tell that Bobby was very uncomfortable about the questions. Leave him alone! He was still grieving over the loss. There I said it! I am not taking it back either. 😎

      With all due respect, Bob was well-aware of the questions and was not in any way "grieving." There's a context that the listener almost never has, that often times the interviewer does-particularly when the interviewer is closer to the source than the listener. Not your fault, just a misinterpretation of facts.
