    I'm so happy that you made this video! I will be a freshman next year but I totally relate to joining a new school. My school is pretty small too and there are only about 20 kids in each grade but people from different grades are friends so a random junior would come up to me and start talking to me which was sooo scary. I never changed by name in school but I always did in public places like when ordering something. I sympathize with your high school experience so much because it sounds really hard and I've been in a dark place when I didn't talk to anyone. I think it's great when everyone in your class knows about your stutter because it takes that weight off your shoulder. I told my entire class and they were so supportive. I've been to about 4 or 5 speech therapists because none of them worked. Their goal was to get rid of the stutter and make me fluent. I just started with another one recently and she focuses on the anxiety and mental health part which has made a huge difference.

      That's SO amazing you told your class about your stutter and they were supportive! I think that's one of the best things you could ever experience in high school as a person who stutters. I also very well relate to the speech therapy experiences, as I mentioned in the video. Most of my childhood speech therapy was based around being fluent, and most of it only made me more insecure personally. Thanks for sharing all of that, and I wish you the best of luck in your new school next year, I know you'll continue to shine!!

    Hey Courtland I've been watching your videos for some time and I never knew someone could stutter like me. I am in high school and I've gained some confidence onwards since I told my friends classmates and teachers and they are very supportive. I really thank you for sharing your story

    I've lived in Tampa Florida my whole life and thanks for making this video. It's rare to meet another stutterer like myself. Like others, it felt like it got worse in high school and I became self conscious of it. I avoided all class discussions and stayed quiet hoping the teachers wouldn't call on me. When going to college I signed up as a disabled student just so I can feel comfortable with myself.
    But stuttering wasn't my only challenge growing up, it was also coming to terms with my sexuality so I had a pretty rough youth. Glad you're going for speech pathology and never let the stutter hold you back. Life is all about being yourself and not hiding it. Also, I felt you on skipping homecoming but I only went to prom my senior year. I could have had so many friends if I hadn't keep to myself and hide.
    Edit: What high school did you attend? I went to Leto

      Hi Pierre! So cool to talk to another person who stutters in Tampa! I actually grew up on the east coast of the state, but I've spent the last five years here attending USF. Also, we have a Tampa chapter of the National Stuttering Association where we hold monthly online meetings, just in case you're ever interested in joining us! You could find information for it on the NSA's website. Also, I feel your pain with signing up as a disabled student, I actually registered with the Students with Disabilities my first year at USF in order to get out of taking a language (sort of regret that, now). Thanks for sharing all of that!

    I related WAY to much to the not really talking during school or raising your hand thing. I have found that throughout highschool (as I am now a senior), I have gained more confidence and more comfortable to do this yet some days the idea of speaking to anyone or saying anything at all in a class in the chance I might stutter gives me anxiety to the point that my entire body starts shaking. Any tips on how to avoid or control the anxiety part of it? Also unrelated question sometimes I am able to tell when I will stutter on a word before even try to begin to say that word. Is that normal?

    • @stutteringslp
      @stutteringslp  Před 3 lety +1

      I wish I could have a more straight-forward answer or "quick fix" to help you ease anxiety around stuttering in class. But the reality is that it sometimes takes a change of mindset to truly be comfortable with stuttering around other people, and that may take time. I recommend looking into stuttering self-help groups such as the National Stuttering Association (NSA), the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), or F.R.I.E.N.D.S. These organizations often hold weekly/monthly online meetings. I believe a big part of overcoming the mental anxiety with stuttering is talking it through with other people who stutter, other people who can relate and hear you out. And as much as I love to give advice to people who stutter (as I did at the end of the video), there are SO many incredible people who stutter out there with different kinds of experiences and I think it's helpful to give yourself more exposure! Also to answer your second question, yes that is normal! It's often referred to as the "anticipation" of stuttering, we usually can tell when we're going to stutter on a certain word (based on experiences of us stuttering on that word or sound in the past).

      I can definitely tell some of the time that I will stutter on a word. I have also experienced anxiety like that when I tried too be friends with someone at work for the first time by myself with no one too help me.

      @@Exjed7 I completely agree! Do you have a method that you use to try to control your anxiety because of the stutter?

    • @Exjed7
      @Exjed7 Před 3 lety

      @@emmasteffen6924 Unfortunately I do not have a way to control my anxiety because I have just recently found out about it. I only get the anxiety when I think about it and during/after trying. All I can say is just take a breath and try not too think about it too much. This works for me during a stutter or before, just take a breath, pause and then continue and that usually works for me most of the time.
