Ok, so hear me out here....This song is the perfect analogy for our current political situation in the US. Ed represents our slimy politicians talking us into voting for them even though we know they kinda are idiots, Charlie is the American People, the boat is the economy. When Ed (aka Politicians) realizes he is in over his head he jumps out & swims to safety (because he is a rich politician & isn't going down with the ship) leaving Charlie (the American people) stuck to deal with the repercussions of his dumb decision & of course Ed eventually gets away free & clear.
