Turn On Your PC With Your Voice Using Google Nest

  • With a little bit of work you can get Google Nest to turn on your PC. While Amazon Echo's have a skill that can enable the ability to send Wake On Lan requests from the echo devices, Google Nest doesn't have this built in, nor do they have a skill that can be added.
    There is a work around though by using IFTTT to listen to Google and trigger an automation on your phone. In this video I go through quickly how I have implemented this routine. Note that this only works locally and relies on your phone being connected to your home network.
    Step 1: Ensure your bios is enabled for Wake on Lan
    Step 2: In Windows, make sure your network card is set to enabled for Wake On Lan and ready to receive a 'Magic Packet'
    Step 3: Install Wake On Lan on your phone, find your PC and test that you can turn on your machine from the app.
    Step 4: Using an app called 'Automate' create an automation on your phone that 'listens' for a text message to yourself with the text 'wakeonlan' (or whatever you want), and when this is received, trigger the Wake On Lan shortcut for your PC
    Step 5: Create an applet in IFTTT that listens to your Google Nest for a specific command, then SMS yourself the text from above 'wakeonlan'.
    Step 6: If all this works, when you say the command to the Google device, IFTTT should text your phone with the specific text, Automate should read that message and trigger the Wake On Lan app to boot up your PC.
    * Disclaimer: This is for education purposes only and I accept no responsibility for any issues changing settings on your phone, PC bios or Windows. If you are not comfortable changing anything mentioned in this video I recommend you not try.

    Great video. I've got all the bits installed and set up - however it doesn't seem to trigger the shortcut to wake on lan. If I click WOL and the PC I want to wake, it works, but the automate loops doesn't seem to be starting the WOL app? Is there something I'm missing?

      Best thing to do is break the routine into steps to confirm where the breaking point is. For me the first couple of times the text message was arriving but the text didn't match 100% so didn't trigger the rest of the routine. This seems to be the biggest point of failure for people as any capitals or spaces will stop it working. Also just a reminder you need to be on the same wifi. Hope you get it sorted!

However, if you are referring to other setup like 2 pc inputs like mine. Use KVM switch.

      If you have the correct Wake On Lan app installed (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.mrwebb.wakeonlan&hl=en&gl=US) you use the plus sign to add new devices and search for the PC while on the the wireless. Note you may have to do this manually by adding the IP address and MAC address of your lan card. Then all you need to do is give it a name and add it to the 'bookmarked' group when you set it up. Long hold and click the pen icon to edit this if you need to. This is enough to create this as a shortcut.

      There's an option in automate to take any message from a number as a trigger, but if you keep scrolling down there's an option to input the specific text from the message. See 7:00 and 7:12. If you leave the 'message' section blank it will take any message as the trigger so make sure this is populated.

      Don't think there's a way to remove the 'activate' as this is the trigger for IFTTT commands as far as I remember. As for other languages, I don't know if IFTTT supports this, but the best would be to see if you can change the language on your Google device and on IFTTT and see if that works maybe?

    • @AndysTechLife
      @AndysTechLife  Před 2 lety +1

      If the WOL app is working to turn the PC and you're receiving the SMS it sounds like the automate app either isn't reading the sms or not then triggering the WOL app.
      Just check that the exact text in the sms is the same as what the automate app is looking for, any difference will cause this not to work.
      If you test the automate routine in the automate app and its working without receiving the SMS thats the most likely reason.

    • @AndysTechLife
      @AndysTechLife  Před 6 měsíci

      It sounds like automate is not actually triggering the bookmark for your PC and instead calling the option to add the bookmark to the home screen. Best bet is to remove the bookmark for the PC you're looking to wake in the Wake on Lan app and re-add it there. Then make sure that when you go back to Automate you choose Apps -> App Shortcut Start -> Pick Shortcut. Then scroll down to Wake on Lan app and you should get the screen to pick the device or group in Wake On Lan. If this doesn't work I'm not sure what the issue is.

  • @agn855

    JFTR, Alexa & PC needs only the TriggerCMD skill.
    It'll trigger a simple AutoHotkey script to execute/terminate whatever you like on your remote PC.
    If you are OK with pressing a single button instead of yelling it into your Android device you can use 'UDPRun' and trigger whatever script/app on your box.

      No, unfortunately this won't work on Wi-Fi as your wireless card is off and not connected to the network when the laptop is off so it can't listen for a wake command. It will only work with wired LAN connections as these can be connected and powered even with the PC off.

If this is the case best to Google your particular PC or motherboard to see if there's any specific settings. Remember this won't work on WiFI will only work with the PC connected to LAN / Wired connection.

      The steps are theoretically the same. Connect Google assistant to IFTTT, make sure the trigger phrase is 'Exactly' what you plan to say. IFTTT then sends an sms back to your phone which triggers automate which in turn triggers Wake on lan.
      1. This is only going to work if your PC and phone are on the same network. Wont work if you're on your mobile network.
      2. If your phone is not receiving the SMS start again as this is what triggers the routine. Remember the SMS must also 'exactly' match what Automate is listening for.
      3. Check when the SMS arrives that automate is actually triggering the action.
      It's a very complex setup, but a physical Google device isn't needed, but each step has to be done with exact details or nothing will work. Best of luck!

      You need to install IFTTT app first then search for Google through the explore menu in IFTTT and add the voice assistant to your IFTTT account.
      If this isn't working none of the following steps are going to work or make sense. The whole setup relies on IFTTT.

    • @AndysTechLife

      Might be worth learning a bit about IFTTT from their website and videos first as you need to get IFTTT to listen for the Google voice command, then send an SMS from IFTTT to your own mobile number to trigger. If IFTTT isn't working then the whole thing won't work.

      Seems like a delay in either the triggering or the network. If you said it twice the messages coming in now might be the delayed ones from before. Unfortunately there are several points on this where things can go wrong as neither Google or IFTTT have a simpler way to do this. Its a pity since Amazon have WOL functionality built in. If I was to guess its because the phone is switching from cellular network and WiFi which breaks the routine. Best thing is to do some tests with just getting the SMS and see where the issue is and once you are getting the message every time, then add the WOL trigger.

    • @AndysTechLife
      @AndysTechLife  Před 4 měsíci

      So you're not trying to put a Shortcut on your home screen. You need to create a bookmark in the Wake On Lan app itself and get the automate to trigger that. You don't need to add anything to the home screen. Once you've created a bookmark to the PC you want to wake in Wake On Lan, automate should be able to see that bookmark and run it.

      Same for me, ive created bookmark, i click pick shortcut on automate, click on wol shortcut, it then takes me to wol app i click on my bookmark and it doesnt add it on automate, it just asks if i want to add to home screen.

    I tried doing this years ago and it's very clunky. the easiest solution I found to home automate turning on your PC on is by using AC power loss in your BIOS to restart your computer and a smart plug to simulate a power loss.

    • @AndysTechLife
      @AndysTechLife  Před rokem

      This does work, but I'd be hesitant to constantly kill the power to the PC without shutting down properly. It'll work and probably won't do any harm, but there is a risk of just killing the power using a plug. The plus with this method is that it does do a proper Windows shutdown.

    • @AndysTechLife
      @AndysTechLife  Před 3 lety

      Remember this will only work with Lan connections and not WIFI
      Try:
      * Making sure the automate applet is ready to listen for an sms.
      * your phone is on the same WiFi / Network as your PC
      * you've given the automate app permission to access phone / sms / communications.
      * once the automation runs it will stop unless you create a loop at the end to go back to waiting for the text message.
      Hope this helps.
