As historian Niall Ferguson writes in his 2011 book, “Civilization: The West and the Rest”, the city of London was an outback in the 15th century compared to some of China’s great cities. Then with international trading led by The British East India Company money flooded in, as did people of different nationalities. The population is estimated to have been 50,000 in 1530 and then in 1605 it was around 225,000 people. Throughout the industrial revolution London became the center of the world and from around 1825 to 1925 it had the largest population of any city on Earth. The British Empire faded, but London has always been a powerhouse culturally, but also economically. According to the Global Financial Centers Index, London is still the largest financial center in the world- but what is this great city truly about? Welcome to this episode of the Infographics Show, What is the city of London corporation?
It may come as a surprise to some of you that London is not just a city but also a corporation. Those that don’t know are probably thinking right now what is this corporation? Does it function like the Microsoft Corporation? Does it hire and fire and post annual profits? Does it have a main headquarters and a CEO? Let’s find out.
So, the Corporation of London or in legal terms the Mayor and Commonalty and Citizens of the City of London, is the governing body of London’s financial district which is sometimes referred to as the “Square Mile.” Within that mile around 8,000 live, although around 400,000 people commute into that area for work every day, according to the corporation’s own website. London is divided into 33 areas, or boroughs, and this area is one of them. On its website the corporation is perhaps extremely vague when it answers the question concerning what it is responsible for. The answer it gives is, “Providing services for residents (and City businesses) in the Square Mile, but not those of other boroughs.” And yep, you can apply for a job in this corporation, just like any other. It has bosses in a sort of way and lots of staff. But let’s rewind a little.

Do you approve of avoiding paying taxes by resorting to "tax havens"?
The Infographics Show congrats with the new son !
maybe not
thats where india's money is......
Yeah, if I would have big company I would probably avoid paying taxes by resorting to tax havens
If I say yes then it would be moraly wrong not legally.
London has 32 Boroughs, and 1 city. The City of London itself is, per the name, a city, and does not count of one of the London boroughs.
You are pretty much right, but City of Westminster is a city in its own right, and a borough.
@@Locutus the city of Westminster is specifically designed as a London borough, and counts as one of them. However the city of London is not
Billy Dinsdale Westminster is a city
Marlborough...
*London is not a city, never has been a city, and never will be a city* contrary to what most people believe, therefore it is not a *city within a city* as that's impossible.
The *UK* has *69 cities* and *London* is not one of them.
*Greater London* aka *London* is a *county* and *region* which contains *2 cities.*
Those *2 cities* are:
1 - The 8 mile square *City of Westminster.*
2 - The 1 mile square *City of London* which is also a *county.*
Therefore for *Greater London* to become a *city* they would either have to persuade those 2 cities to voluntarily give up their *city status,* or persuade the *Queen* to forcibly remove the *city status* from those 2 cities, neither of which will happen.
I live in london and oddly enough they have the "City of London Police" too.
Theres a city in london called the city of london they are not the same
If I am not mistaken its sovereign in and of itself and much of the worlds corrupt banking is managed through it to evade taxes being the most common.
@NPC#6789 Orange Man Bad Their freedom, our "slavedom", in the "United" Kingdom.
It's not sovereign in the slightest. This is nonsensical. Also, most banking business moved away from the City years ago. The whole thing is tripe.
Where did a corporate bank get sovereignty from ?
The city of london is a different city than london. This video is a shittier and less accurate version of CGP Grey's video.
its different...they already explain...so why whining?
No. CGP's video has the same amount of mistakes as this

The Infographics Show love you guys 👌
Nice video learnt somthing
Awesome video
'The Square Mile', or 'The City of London' (the OG London founded by the Romans), is a city WITHIN London (the newer city founded by the Normans). It's not a borough, and it enjoys lots of autonomy. In a way, it behaves like one of the countries of the UK.
IT is the UK 🇬🇧 posing as a union of nations
Yeah, exactly. When i first learnt about the city of London, i kept confusing it for the "regular" London that most people know about. The City of London is basically a country in itself and even the monarch has to ask permission to enter it.
Cool,I never knew London was a corp. It's pretty interesting. Thx for the info.
Thanks for the feedback!

That is stunning in itself. I'm 42 and had no clue about it until today. I'm upset about that.

This felt like a Medieval GTA Story - meets Game Of Thrones
2:45 is that a reference to CGP Gray's video on the city of london?
Corporation Of London...is the head business, that protects businesses through tax havens. He who has the gold...makes the rules. However...the love of money, is the root of all evil.
Very good
This sounds like a fun place.
a lot of the problems in the world can be traced back to the square mile in one way or another
And the 0.17 square miles, Vatican City.

No, that's the Vatican City. The City of London steals your body via enslavement to the love of money.
Interesting! As of 12/10/2018, New York is currently ranked number 1, followed by London at number 2, for world financial center. Hong Kong is a close 3rd.
I think London has always been ok with NY thinking it is over them while they bank capital how it has over all these eras.
That is "official" money, not dark money. Non of the money flowing through the tax havens gets put on the books, occasionally you might find sources claiming the dark money that gets unofficially managed from the city of London amounts to tens of trillions of dollars.
Seems like a lot until you realise Blackrock manages about ten trillion of official money on it's own.
The largest Italian mafia organisation has an annual turnover of $180 billion, got to put that tax free money somewhere...
After Brexit I would say London fell to the third spot. Lots of EU corporations relocated to Frankfurt or Amsterdam and I work for one of them. Singapore has a solid claim as the second biggest financial center as of now.
@@nailil5722 Definitely Interesting. I just looked up the top position and New York still holds the top spot since 2018 when I originally made this reply. Things have certainly changed since Brexit.
I'm a Londoner who has recently spoken to the Clerk of the Chamberlain’s Court about being granted Freeman status
What they said?
I have a form here, I've had it here for quite a while.
I am confident that given my circumstances I could be granted Freeman status. It would mean that I'm able to transport sheep over London bridge, but I'm not sure if I would benefit from that

I’m curious does the city of London have any cases of Coronavirus?
Of course not
The City of London is counted together with Hackney in terms of coronavirus case reporting as the local health board is shared between the two regions, so I am pretty sure there must be some cases among the City's residents.
