When I retired a few years back I bought a gravel-ready Tandem so I could take my wife on the classic rides across Snowdonia, Dales, Peaks etc... However this highlights the difference between our techniques, especially nutrition and cadence; I'm just about zipped after 45 miles.... I'm sure there's a video to be made about contrasting fitness and mismatched riders on the GCN tandem... It could be a very amusing episode if Hank did before & after rides with his mum/aunt/sister-in-law

Zone 2 - seeing people on ebikes, must show them who's the king of the hill!
Zone 3 - once you showed them, pretend you have a puncture, mechanical, phone call... so you can stop at the side of the road and catch your breath with at least some dignity

I've had my two longest rides ever last month (training for and amstel gold race tour). I trained all winter at home. The last weeks of that I spent on a training plan (Fondo 60, Zwift) which really helped me getting to know my zones. My biggest problem wasn't even the pacing. It was the fueling. I greatly underestimated the amount I had to take in. The last 20 km were hell and to add some salt they included 2 of the toughest climbs. I pedaled through all of it and I am so proud of myself that I finished.

Completed a crazy windy (20-30 mph gusts) Century (100 mi) last weekend. Used a negative split pace strategy guided by my first time using a power meter in an event. Achieved my goal of an averaging at 80% of my ftp over the distance. Being very familiar with the route, terrain, and prevailing wind directions allowed me to anticipate tactical opportunities to push significantly above my ftp and make adequate recoveries. The prize? Enjoying an epic 20 mph tailwind for the last 35 miles..... must be what it feels like to have an e-road bike!

Started this while watching a video on cornering! Answering request for experienced of bad corners.
    1) Tiny gravel spilt round bend like ball bearings. Bent hanger so had to swap Campag 980 derailleur which screwed onto hanger with £50+ Simplex that bolted through the distorted threads when that was a lot of money. After 33 years, still have scars on right arm.
    2) Downhill, tight blind turn, steel rims, 1970s budget brakes, well within my, inside, lane. Elderly lady crossing road. Hit her. She was, remarkably and thank God unhurt. We became good friends. Nearly 50 years ago.
Ever since, always take blind corners tight if on inside, wide if on outside lane. Always assume frail, deaf person with pushchair, wheelchair, Zimmer frame crossing in irresponsible place with cow muck or gravel on road. Shimano dual-pivot 105 brakes, especially on alloy rims, were a revelation compared to Weinmann 500s etc

How to get pacing right and how to NOT get-tired on your bike-rides:
    It's really very-simple. Just do what I did on my very-first Gran-Fondo* (on a MOUNTAIN-BIKE (and not just any mountain-bike: a 38.8-pound (bike measured on a Park-Tool bicycle--weight-scale (the same one with the double-hook, that GCN uses for their "GCN Scales-of-Truth" thing)) aluminium front-suspension-only 3x8-speed 42-34-22 crankset 11-34 casette mineral-oil--disc-brake mountain-bike)):
Ride as if you were riding a joyride. Ride at cruising speed. Never EVER ride at full-throttle the whole entire time [from the moment you start the bike-ride to the moment you finish the bike-ride]. Because if you ride at full-throttle, you're going to get tired, FAST.
*(I would also like-to-add (because this is STILL within context) that this Gran-Fondo was On-Pavement, not Off-Pavement (and I specify that because I said I did it on a mountain-bike. And I did it on a mountain-bike because it's the only bicycle I've got), and it was 124.274 miles (200 kilometers) in length, from Start-line to Finish-line)
P.S. This was all [done* in] completely old-school: No pacemaker, no tickr, no cycling-computer, no GPS navigation-system, no speedometer, no velocimeter, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
*("done" as-in "hecho" in Spanish. Not the translation/definition "done" as-in "terminado")

In 1964, NASA did a study of human Wattage output on a cycle ergometer vs endurance.
Many volunteers performed 1 hour tests ( FTP ) and then tests exerting more and less than FTP.
The resultant curve looked similar across the volunteers.
When a rider's FTP is 200 ( Mediocre amateur ), a 6 hour ride ( 100km Audax ) will have an average of approx 60 Watts. Then the curve flattens off until sleep deprivation occurs.

Heart attack, 3 resuscitations, stent. Genetic despite core fitness levels which delayed it by ten years and aided survival and recovery. WARM UP and WARM DOWN. Once warmed up, I put out the watts almost like old days. Push a tiny bit too hard too soon and exhaustion kicks in.
But it's not taking 15 minutes to get heart rate down, slowly, to near base levels then sitting at desk for afternoon work or flopping at coffee stop that kills you (seen that). Be very careful about pulling up after a hard climb to admire view or chat with the gang.
Fitness and strength are not the same as health and can make you feel healthier than you are. Activity does not, by itself, make you healthy but inactivity kills

So I'm a complete beginner, right? I've only started riding my bike (a touring one too) on early April. This year (meaning these past 40 days or so) I have ridden about 75-80km in total. I did one 20km ride, one 40km ride (ended up being 52) and some short ones in between. My goal is to do one 100km ride in May. I was supposed to do that in April but easter, weather, period... things got in the way, anyway. So tomorrow, in a few hours, I'm supposed to be doing 60km if it doesn't rain too much. I know I can do more than that but I wanted to work up to 100km by adding 20 each time I go out for a long ride. I also know 60km isn't much for most of you but I want to do a bit of a good time and maybe add some elevation too, the biggest one being a 2km 10%-11% climb at the very end, so pacing is going to be very very important tomorrow. Did I mention I'm a *really* bad climber? I am. Lowkey terrified. Wish me luck

So, I just ride at a smarter pace and let them kill themselves. At certain points, they're all "waiting" for me. Yeah, right...more like catching their breath. I'm not daft.

You won't have any problem warming up on a fixie! High and low cadence are normal. Pacing uphill means staying within yourself while having something for the top. Downhill sometimes scuttling your speed is needed to not spin out. Riding into a headwind means you learn all about aero gains quickly! My geared bike is not my everyday bike.

    • @Vokunos

@@philipcooper8297 to be honest, it depends... Mainly on if you ride breakless or not and how hard your gear ratio is while doing so. I learned to fell in love with having breaks. And it's also safer of course. But that's all, I never had knee problems from grinding uphill and climbing is actually one of my favorite things to do in fixed gear bikes and Singlespeeds, conquering hills or even mountains feel so amazing when you look back on what you accomplished.

The only problem is that in a race the pack chooses the speed, and even in a fondo we ride in packs right ? Big race of the season for me tomorrow, hoping to start out at under 80% of max heartrate, but more likely it goes off at 80-85% even though we all agreed on starting out slow. A little over 1 hour in, we will hit a 3km climb at 7%, hoping that we will pace it right. Managing to eat enough is a major problem for me, will try to do my best tomorrow, drink and eat enough is crucial, and with 160+km coming up, with a hard 3km climb at 6% 12km from the finish, I'd like to not repeat previous failures, where I have done well to that point, then struggled from there to the finish and lost precious time from going empty too soon.

I'm 25, and I don't think I've ever injured my knee. Does that sound like tight muscles that need more effort to loosen (through pre-ride stretching) or could I be developing an injury?

    • @mattmatthews5414

Could be anything. Saddle height, how splayed out your legs are, crank Q-Factor…
At 25 I was only riding fixed 52-14 and my left knee would sorta hurt for the first mile or two till one little tendon would pop into place and the pain would be gone.
At 27 I borrowed a friend’s fixed for a few weeks. It was geared 42-15 and after the first two commutes on it both of my knees began hurting all day. Over three weeks it went from discomfort to straight pain. Ten minutes on the road after I got my bike back from the shop and my knees felt way better.
Check your bike fit and consult a doctor and a sports physical therapist.
You may just need to do some exercises & stretches for your IT band.

    • @BigDSProductions
      @BigDSProductions Před 2 lety +1

See a specialist doctor or sports/rehab therapist. You may have some muscle tightness or tendinitis. Simple stretches could fix everything. Or, if you're anything like me, you may have injured yourself at some point and didn't realize it. It wasn't until I had rehab from surgery on a torn ACL and MCL, that a therapist pointed out I had numerous ankle sprains (some severe) and mild injuries to my other knee. When I was young and playing American football, I had that "rub some dirt on it and walk it off" mentality. I figured if I had really hurt myself, I wouldn't be able to keep going. I pay for that now in pain. I use special strap braces for patellar tendinitis (jumpers knee) when cycling and do some special stretches daily. And it fixed most of the knee problems I have on the bike.

    • @BigDSProductions
      @BigDSProductions Před 2 lety

And if you're using cleats, you may have to make an adjustment to the positioning. Take some relaxed steps across a room, then stop naturally. Look down at your feet. If that left foot is turned in or out, adjust your cleats angle to mimic that. Since I started riding clipless during the pandemic, no one was offering bike fits. Took me a month of trial, error, and knee pain to figure out that both my feet point to the left. On that point, if you are riding a lot and plan to get faster and stronger on the bike, it's worth every penny to get a proper bike fitting. I finally got one last summer. Instant improvement in distance and speed.

I was dragging the bike back by the end! xD

Looks like you more than sustained it. According to my slide rule 77km/3.5 hr= 22km/hr. A good exercise to try would be to go out for 100km and aim to be done in 4 3/4 hours.

@@professorsogol5824 Thanks for the encouragement Sogol! Yeah, I'm actually training up to be able to cycle 100km a day for 16 days and I need to be ready by this time next year!

Why does everything have to revolve around speed?. What happened to just enjoying your ride?. Competition cyclists make up only a tiny fraction of the total number of people who cycle!.

Can't disagree with you, although once you have an App, it's hard not to look at the average speed and splits.

Regardless of the type of cyclist you are, training to improve your fitness and ability on the bike is still very rewarding.
