I just downloaded a 4K scan of a 35mm of this movie (Project 4K99) and the difference is incredible, I don't think any home video format has ever made justice to how the movie looked in cinemas.
Cool, had no idea that existed.
Interesting. What's the audio situation with 4k99?
I personally don't mind the look of the UHD (never saw it in the cinema as I was a baby) but the audio doesn't come close to the impact of my dads old LD.
Alas there aren't any LD rips available for me to get the audio from & I don't have the equipment to rip it myself.
I could always use BeQ but I can't splash the cash on one of those Dsp's right now.
It's back in theaters today
@@MsMarco6hmmm I have a rip
Sorry for asking, but do you have a link to 4K99?
It's worth noting that for the 4k we're looking at an SDR capture of an HDR video.
So the contrast has been reduced & image darkened.
I just checked my copy and the contrast & colours look a lot closer to the previous versions just a bit brighter so don't worry about that when picking up the UHD.
Not sure about the laserdisc though looking at the LD & Vhs tapes the capture method appears to leave a lot of detail behind and may be the cause of the crushed blacks.
Apologies! My video is not the gospel, of course. Trust your instincts, as Qui-Gon would say.
Just checked again: the file Maarten provided, was an actual HDR capture (straight rip from the 4K disc with MakeMKV). But, true, my editing software Cyberlink PowerDirector does not do HDR, so the final edit is in SDR. But it's worth pointing out that the source was at least in HDR.
The sound mix on the Ac3 Ld is my favourite.
It does sound spectacular. The bass during the podrace will wake the neighbours.
Richie Rich also needs a 4K transfer ❤
YES! But normal 1080p Blu-ray would be a great start.
Yep! Agree 🥲
I don't know why am I loving the Belgium widescreen VHS! It is giving me more at more cinema feeling than the 4K! Haha
Haha. It sure has its charms. Love me some VHS.
Great comparison videos, but I wish the LD was directly compared one on one with any of the DVDs in the split screen comparisons.
I'll make an extra video for you!

@@JulianDeBacker thanks!
Too bad the 3D version never got a release on 3D Blu-ray :(
Yes! I saw that one in cinemas in 2012. No idea why they never released it. Easy money, I'd say. 'Star Wars' fans would buy it again.
@@JulianDeBacker yeah it apparently raked in 100 million in revenue on the re-release in 3D, I never understood why they cancelled those
@@kelownatechkid True, made a lot of money in 3D. Episodes II and III in 3D were cancelled because Disney bought Lucasfilm, but they were planned. And, if I'm not mistaken, at least Episode II played in 3D during a Celebration convention - so those in attendance back then saw something unique.
VHS version of Phantom Menace is the original theatrical version. Only place you can find it. Better pod race.
LaserDisc is the original theatrical version too.
@@JulianDeBacker didn't know that in the US we all had access to the VHS mostly.
@@vegasgone07-dh4lb Me too, VHS first (in 2000). Then DVD in 2001.
Why are there audio pitch differences, even between different digital formats?
PAL vs NTSC, I presume. PAL has a 4% speed-up versus NTSC, so both audio and video sounds a little different.
Great video mate
Thanks for watching!
Belgium region free Blu-ray looked the best to me, thanks for the comparisons!
You're very welcome!
i want one.. .phantom meenace has a special place in my heart
Great movie!
The theatrical cut of the Pod race that’s on the VHS is the superior cut. It’s a travesty that the theatrical cut of the prequels aren’t available, specifically that cut.
That cut is also on the LaserDisc!
I like the contrasts of the laserdisc.
A tad too dark, perhaps, but great PQ for sure.
The sound on the LD was stunning. I had a friend who owned it, and I was able to borrow it for awhile. I'd love to find one someday just to have it in my collection.
Yeah, excellent sound design. The disc is not rare! You should be able to find it.
Bluray 4k and LD colors don't look right to me. Nice video!
Thanks for watching! You do like the DVD/Blu colours?
@@JulianDeBacker VHS, DVD and Bluray (normal) looks fine to me. DVD slightly more red-ish
@@Ebastine I was actually surprised how well the DVD holds up (almost 23 years old after all).
That's because the 4k is an SDR capture of an HDR video.
IRL it doesn't look quite like that & the colours are fine.
You'd need to publish in HDR to do an accurate comparison but YT certainly doesn't make that easy.
Haha I just uploaded a video of my rotted LD. My old capture device's sadly broken, so the quality blows.
A rotted Phantom Menace?
@@JulianDeBacker yup
@@AfterBurnerTeirusu Wow, I had no idea. "Normally", most newer discs don't rot. But you're not the only one, it seems: www.lddb.com/laserrot.php?id=46
@@JulianDeBacker Yeah mine's the other critical rotter. Side A is all messed up with all kinds of white and coloured specles, and the audio track's all garbled. Sides B and C are both perfectly fine.
@@AfterBurnerTeirusu Darn, poor you. Hope you'll find another (cheap) copy soon.
Why did episode I is classified u for universal. Darth maul is too scary
Haha, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has been known to make odd decisions. 'Look Who's Talking' - a family comedy - was rated '15'.
VHS is good
Better than I expected or remembered!
Does it suck on laserdisc as much as it does on 4k?
That's up to you. I, for one, genuinely like 'The Phantom Menace', but you're entitled to your own opinion.
Why do late issue VHS look so awful. I have Attack of the Clones, its pan and scan and it should look better than the OT it doesn't. Somehow the OT THX tapes and Indiana Jones THX tapes just a few years previously look great. I have Phantom Menace Letterbox VHS the laserdisc is so much better its no contest. I do remember renting the pan and scan VHS and we thought it looked awful, lowres and blurry. Once the DVD came out we never watched the tape again.
I genuinely have no idea. I did a video on late VHS releases (2005-ish) and they look horrible, haha. czcams.com/video/GAB4r1HARNY/video.html
