  • Rugby podcasters Brett McKay and Harry Jones welcome back to The 8-9 Combo Welsh rugby writer and top shelf video analyst Sam Larner to run the rule over the first round of July Internationals in the southern hemisphere, and contemplate the lessons learned and the early kneejerk reactions ahead of the Second Tests this weekend coming.
Sam and the guys go through the major series now underway in the southern hemisphere - New Zealand-England, Australia-Wales, South Africa-Ireland, and Argentina-France - and look at the major lessons learned for the losing sides, the obvious work-ons for the winners, and take an early look at where changes might be made at the selection tables. And ponder who of England, Wales, and Ireland might be best equipped to square their series, while outlining what worked so well for New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland.

It's a huge relief that we have a world-class coaching team back in charge of the Wallabies. Interested in Sam's view of where the Wallabies are headed. If I heard correctly, competitive against the best European teams and teams and winning against the lesser. I feel that's where we were at after Rennie's spring tour (the Italian debacle aside). The challenge, then and now is finding the extra yard.

Really interesting pod - liked Sam’s insights. It was interesting in terms of overall quality to see Aus v wales alongside boks/Ireland and ABs/England. A fair distance for both wales and wallabies to go, but hey, at least the wallabies are going forward now.

Good fill in for Harry Jones Brett, gee that bloke Harry James could easily pass for the original. Good chat. Agree the new Alliance is a great spot and not a bad seat anywhere really. Seeing Tom W run towards us for that try was a highlight . I used to watch him play when he was at school and saw him score some very similar type tries

I am a bit concerned for Ireland with the injury list from last weekend's game. Dan Sheehan possible ACL, Craig Casey concussion, Robbie Henshaw head knock, Jamie Osborne groin injury and Andrew Porter hurt his hand. I am sure some will be able to play but not sure. I want the Irish team to be as close to full strength as they can be.

About the game clock, in Super Rugby the ref will often say, 20 secs, 10 secs etc. On the weekend the ref said ''kick it' which I think might have been interpreted as Dmac had time., when the ref actually meant kick it right now. Also I think it should be 1min from the time the kicker gets the ball not from the time the whistle blows.

The shot clock should be easily visible on the big screen just as it was at the RWC and as it is in the Top 14. In any other sport, the administration would see the need for a clock as a perfect marketing opportunity to sell ad space to an official timekeeper. Why do no rugby administrations in this part of the world have a skerrick of commercial acumen, especially the All Blacks who already have Tudor on board as a major sponsor.

@@MLF-kq8ut Yea seems a fairly simple thing to set up, you'd think it would be done by now!

@@MLF-kq8ut World Rugby when announcing the intro of shot clocks said they would be visible across the board. Crazy that this still hasn't been sorted. Wasn't displayed in Sydney, either..

@@BrettMcKaySport I think NZR announced yesterday following this that there'd be one at the Eden Park test. I remember there was some issue getting it sorted for Super Rugby too. Hopefully this has been a catalyst for us Antipodeans to finally sort ourselves out and we see it appear at AAMI this weekend too.
