Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

The 93rd were equipped with rifled minie ball muskets. The advancing Russian infantry had smooth bore muskets effective to 100 yards. These new rifled muskets were effective to 1000 yards. The thin Red Line fired their first round at 100 yards that went through more than one man with each shot. With each additional volley this new weapon caused great disaster to the densely packed Russian infantry. This was the second “Thin Red Line” the first was at Waterloo. The Minie Ball was about .50 cal and shattered bones as it passed through bodies. This caused the victims to have limbs amputated as there was no saving them. An awful weapon used in the American Civil War as well with devastating effect.

Not a 1000 yards, about 400 yards, still 4 times the distance of a round musket ball. The British Enfield Pattern 1853 used a .577 diameter Minié ball, the US Springfield Model 1861 used a .58 diameter Minié.
Could a Minié ball reach 1,000 yards? Only in the hands of a very skilled marksman, not the average soldier.
Ballistics Charts put the furthest point around 500 yards with the standard service black powder load for both rifles.
Both rifles with standard load averages 1,000 feet/second, a 60O grain ball will use a charge of 60 grains of black powder. For a 600 grain projectile, 1000fps is SLOW. Past 200 yards, velocity is shed rapidly. To hit a target 500 yards away requires aiming considerably above it, some 60 inches per the ballistics charts.
The effects, as you stated, were devastating. Round balls will "wander" dramatically in tissue, even, traveling around a bone, following paths of least resistance if the ball connects obliquely. Miniés punched straight through and created horrific wounds, shattering bone and destroying soft tissue as that ounce and a half of lead passed through.
It wouldn't be until the development of Nitrocellulose based powders in 1884 and the adoption brass cartridge case (1870s) over paper, that the 1,000 yard mark could be consistently achieved.

To the gates that used to stand at the grahamston iron works. A replica of the gates that stood at bellahouston park in Glasgow for the great exhibition in the 1930s. Sadly grahamston iron works is also gone. But the fact remains that in there day. Especially carron was at the forefront of navel technology. Giving Nelson the fire power to win at Trafalgar. Thanks for the very cool history lesson, Bruce! I'd always heard that the term, 'thin red line' came from the Crimean War. It meant a small but possibly good chance of achieving your goal. It's out of use by most of the generations around me now, as my father's WWII generation was the last I heard using it regularly. Now, I know where it actually comes from! I now understand quantum physics a little bit better as well, oh physics professor! As a melting pot American, I can't always say that, but I've found that much of the history taught in this country follows your basic law of physics quite accurately! Actually, most countries usually follow that physics law, I think. Isn't it always written by the victors? Your videos prove that law on a weekly basis. I love that! ❤

There is a heck of a lot of history packed into that area just below the castle. The two guns prominently displayed on "Battery Hill" overlooking the old bridge are quite boring by contrast, but the co-located heidin stane . . . I can add a few more elements to the possible journey and changing ownership of those cannons.
Napoleon did lose his captured cannon not long after his pyrrhic victory at Borodino, and the Russians lost a portion of those they regained that year forty years later after at the Siege of Sevastopol. Some of the Napoleonic-era cannon can still be seen in Moscow, lined up around the walls of the Kremlin Armoury. There was another Kremlin building where old gun barrels were stacked up about four deep along its base, but I think that may have been redesigned and rebuilt since I was there.
Almost a century after the end of the Crimean War, after the retreat from Dunkirk when the British Expeditionary Force had to abandon all its artillery, trucks and armoured vehicles, there was a push in the UK to help rebuild the army's losses by salvaging and melting down as much iron and aluminium as possible. Many Brits will be familiar with the sight -- still evident in many towns and cities today -- of bare garden walls and stone boundaries where iron railings had been sawn off and donated to the war effort. War memorials were not immune: some had their fencing cut down, and many towns also donated the cannon they had received after the Crimean War. The memorial in my home town has had a plaque added which says, "This memorial records the names of those from this borough who gave their lives in the Crimean War. It was originally surmounted by a gun taken at Sebastopol. During the war of 1939-1945 the gun was handed to the government to provide metal for armaments."
Some of that metal, though likely just a small proportion of it originally from Russia, will have found its way back to Russia. In June 1941 the Nazis invaded Russia, the Soviets joined the Allies, and starting in the winter of 1941 the Atlantic allies sent guns, tanks, trucks and other armaments from Britain, Canada and the USA to support the war on the Eastern Front. Forty-one convoys took place over three years, on what was called the Murmansk Run, with about a fifth of the ships being lost either to vicious Arctic weather or to Nazi attack. Some of that cannon metal will have made it to Murmansk and then been driven or hauled over the frozen Lake Ladoga to help relieve the Siege of Leningrad, and some may even have found its way further south to Stalingrad or Kursk and helped to turn the tide of the entire war.
It's a small world, when you get down to it.

My former mother in law's scottish grandfather fought in the Crimean War. She still has the little tin of cookies (not opened) that was given him (and presuemably the others in his regiment) by Queen Victoria. no one dared open the tin...at this point I would say the cookies are cack but its a good family story.

Oh my. That was quite the circumlocutory tale to find something Scottish in Quebec City. Here’s an easier one: the late stand up comedian of SNL fame, Norm Macdonald, was born in Quebec City to parents who taught English at the military base. 3 rd generation Scots of the Glencarry- Stormont Scots settlement.

By 1854 there would have been very few Highlanders in Highland regiments - because of the Clearances. Here is good evidence:
‘When I joined the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders there were four Gaelic-speaking men in the depot, and when attached to the 75th or Gordon Highlanders there was not a Gaelic-speaking soldier in the regiment.’
Source: Letter to the Highland News, 9th April 1898, sent by *A Recruit of 1860*.
