  • This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I undertake a 4 mile circular route to the west of the pretty village of Houghton (located North of Romsey, just off the A3057).
    I start of in the village by looking at the church, the pub & a meander along the single road that passes by beautiful houses & cottages (many thatched). After a quick look at the River Test, I head West along Faithfulls Drove where I experience some stunning views of chalkland hills.
    The highlight of my walk is coming across a truly wonderful field that is completely full of red poppies in full flower - an amazing sight.
    At Hayters Farm, I bear North for half a mile before heading back East, towards the village, along Stevens Drove.

    Houghton is one of those long villages. Lots of pretty cottages and the ‘Boot Inn’, which is very popular in normal times. Thanks for taking us with you. Much appreciated. See you again very soon.

    Really enjoying your videos Dave. I think you have the right balance of history and curiosities along the highways and byways. Those poppies were spectacular. Really can't wait for restrictions to be lifted so I can do some of these walks. There's so much to be thankful for. God bless you and Take care of yourselves.

    Lovely video Dave. Peaceful and relaxing. I don't mind if those poppies aren't all naturally grown. It's a magnificent sight to see them. Thanks for sharing. The Eagret was a delight to watch too.

    Very lovely walk Dave & Logan! Just adored those thatched cottages - especially that one covered in roses!😍🌹 Loved all of the different wildflowers & poppies along the way!🌸🌼🌻 Gave me a smile to just hear you get such a thrill out of all those wonderful poppies!🤗 As for me, I'm always enamored by the foxgloves! Not just because of my last name, but because they always remind me of my Dad. He loved his flowers, but he particularly loved to plant ones that had a "Fox" name in them...Foxgloves, Foxtail Lillies, etc.🦊
    Btw...I think the blue flower you showed might have actually been a Scabiosa (or Pin Cushion Flower) instead of Cornflower (also known as Bachelor Buttons). I grow both in my garden!😊💙

      Thanks. It has certainly been a great year for foxgloves in the New Forest.....I cannot remember seeing so many before!

      @@DaveFord must be my Dad still emptying his pockets of Foxglove seeds (from Heaven now).😂 Everywhere we would go for a walk he would load up his pockets full of foxglove seeds (from his own plants) just in case where we went was "too green & needed some color!". His name was Dave too.

    Beautiful village, if you do a search for Norman Goodland, he visited Houghton in 1981 for Day by Day a Southern Television programme.

    Fabulous walk Dave & Logan. The poppies and daisies were a delight to see. A shame you didn't get to see the egret catch a fish!

    Another lovely walk Dave. Broughton, Houghton and Mottisfont are lovely places I ride through regularly. So calm and peaceful through the lanes. The tea rooms at Houghton Lodge are excellent it is well worth a visit. Thank you and Logan for another informative walk.

      Hi Gemma. I did my walk in the second week of June & I believe (but I am no expert!) that poppies usually stay in bloom for 4 to 5 weeks.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Vita. I parked at the village hall (plenty of spaces) which is easy to find on the main road that goes through the village. Thanks for watching.
