    On the note of music, its important to the entire game. Not only is Answers the most important song in the game, but your ability to understand Dragonsong also changes through the course of the expansion. Songs in this game take on new meaning as your perspective at certain points in the story change. The music is also used very effectively to enhance and at times literally tell the story, so while turning it off in a city or housing area might be a good call after a while, you really want it on when running the story. Never underestimate the value or the specific choices of music used in FFXIV, you'll be missing out.

    • @CaffeinatedDad
      @CaffeinatedDad  Před 3 měsíci +18

      Galactic has given me the run down to listen to the music, listen to the meaning and you'll see why it's such a huge deal. I really think as an outsider I missed that point at first

    • @DayleDiamond
      @DayleDiamond Před 3 měsíci +10

      @@CaffeinatedDad oh yes, the interplay between the lyrics and what they mean evolves with the plot! So reflecting only at the very end might be too late. An upcoming song contrasts 'two', and who or what that is keeps changing and swapping.

    • @Rushifell
      @Rushifell Před 3 měsíci +3

      If one of the main theme songs pops up in game it's a good time to consider the lyrics of the version of the song you're hearing in context of the story point you're at. Not always something easy to do mid stream but reflecting on it can help enhance the story.

      @chakatRiversand Před 3 měsíci +1

      The music is so vital in this game... I actually have thrown together a rough draft of a set of counter-lyrics to the final version of 'Dragonsong' as well.

      @CaffeinatedDad straight up some songs are not only artful but tell or hint at certain elements of the game. When you're fully caught up, I recommend Jocats video about liet motifs. Don't watch it till you're in Endwalker patch content, but God is it good.

    It's always best to remember that SE makes it's trailers for it's gamers who are playing the game & get them excited for what's coming next. ARR's trailer is tough because we can't play 1.0 any more but it does help a lot knowing how SE literally had the 1.0 players playing the calamity that we're seeing in the ARR trailer. Knowing that they, with no warning, were watching the red moon get larger, were running from sudden monster raids in the cities, & the MSQ was bringing the Garlic Bread Empire down on them...

      What I think is insane is how the music means so much more after the playthriugh but answers I feel like has a larger play especially for the 1.0 players because it almost gives them a bit of an epic finale to the world they knew

    I've always viewed ff14 trailers as not something there to pull in new players but rather something to hype up current/old players while potentially tickling the interest of general FF fans and the curious alike. Something closer to an anime/tv shows different season intros and further away from something like a movie trailer.

  • @teadodo4017
    @teadodo4017 Před 3 měsíci +17

    Context does matter a lot in this game! A lot of music, lyrics or scenes or trailers get new layers of meaning even within one expansion beginning vs end, not to mention from expansion to expansion. And in my experience sometimes the context is SO important that the piece loses a large part of its emotional value without it. It may explain why ppl who skip the story struggle to reconnect with it later but also why this community has such a large base of people watching others experience the story for the first time. Not only you get to see the reactions, but also look at the events with your new understanding of context. Also you have really great insights on the game and its aspects, been really enjoying following your experience, glad you like it here!

    I think your trailer reaction highlights the games greatest strength and it's largest weakness, such I'm sure you're already aware of. It rewards investment and paying attention to an insane degree - but also that can leave it feeling weird or even alienating to someone who rushed through the story and didn't really take in the scenes along the way.
    I'm glad you've finally stepped into Ishgard. I've been excited to see your reaction to the end of 2.5, which is where many people will say "omg now I need to know what happens next"

    I will say this with assurance of NO SPOILERS:
    A Realm Reborn's "Trailer" isn't truly a trailer, but two videos glued together.
    The battle and Bahamut was the end cinematic of 1.0 ending with Bahamut's roar as the light fills the screen to Louisoix's look of resignation. That released at the end of 1.0 for the server shut down (and it was around the time of WoW: Cataclysm, so many of us paying attention to both sure felt Bahamut's destruction outshone Deathwing).
    The second half of the video, after the Warriors of Light appear in the present, the Grand Companies on chocobos, seeing Odin & Bahamut, etc. that's all the Realm Reborn trailer.
    Heavensward is definitely story heavy, complete with spoilers for Realm Reborn.
    Stormblood is more traditional in its approach of showing you some new locations and job for the expansion, yet still tied into the story in ways I don't feel spoil much.
    Then there's Shadowbringers which ties directly into the final patch of Stormblood and is a string of "Huh? What? HUH? WHAT?" moments as none of it makes sense. It's the best trailer for "more questions than answers" based on what you know when you first see it, even after completing all of Stormblood's story. AND special bonus: The trailer tells you more than you realize if you go back and watch it again AFTER finishing Shadowbringers.
    And then Endwalker is just.....story goodness all around without really spoiling too much. But it also holds an Easter Egg you won't realize until you finish Endwalker and rewatch it.
    And Dawntrail is more traditional (because it's starting a new tale) with glimpses of new areas and small hints of a new story.
    Of course, every trailer has potential spoilers because you'll see "Oh this character or that character appeared, so I guess they're going to be in that expansion."
    I still recommend all the trailers be viewed only at the right time of having completed the prior expansion, even though many aren't as contextual as ARR > HW.

    The ARR trailer was what sold me right away when I saw it, and hearing that it didn't quite hit the mark with someone caused me to consider other types of context. I was playing WoW at the time and if you did the Cataclysm expansion when it was current, it's nearly impossible to not draw comparisons (see the size of bahamut vs deathwing for example). I don't know how much of that was intentional vs just a happy accident while they were picking up the pieces after 1.0 but whatever the case it did hit and they capitalized on it. At that time I didn't know anything about Eorzea but I found myself willing to find out.
    I've never considered the idea of waiting til you've been partway through the new expansion before going back and watching its trailer. Certainly I tell people to not watch it until at LEAST they finished the x.5 patch quests and have started the x.0 main story. I'd never considered that approach. Now that I am, the main thought that comes to mind is that some of the details in the trailers are designed around hyping (current) players right before the release, and sometimes they even tease future characters or story only to subvert expectations when you do the actual main story quests. The biggest example is probably the shadowbringers trailer, where some of the mystery they generate won't be a mystery if you've done all the 5.0 story.

    Heavensward was a very interesting time. There were plenty of mmos that launched, did okay but the first expansion occurs and numbers flatline and they go f2p. Not only did that not happen but Heavensward saw subscriber numbers skyrocket and for the first time people said "maybe WoW actually has some competition in the market thats going to last?" which never really happened in the longterm for subscription model games. For a game that launched so disastrously in 1.0 it nearly killed the brand ARR was the moment it turned around but Heavensward was the moment it solidified it wasn't just a fluke but the second big none f2p mmo that was going to stick around for the long haul.

    Heavensward keeps it real, yes we're the Hero, but we're also a human in this world, and not everybody likes what we're doing, we, as a character, has been brought into a desperate situation -- not by a cartoonish villain we're destined to defeat, but by the very people of this world, struggling with their own ambitions and beliefs and doing what's right for them. The introduction to the expansion happens naturally within the lore, and that's a huge win of the writing team as this never quite happens again in the future expansions.

    So, one hint: rewatch the ARR trailer once you finish base Endwalker. Plz remember this comment in 2 years :v

      I've seen this quite a bit, I plan on watching all the trailers before watching the endwalker trailer!

    You should play Nier: Automata before it's featured collaboration raid in FFXIV, for context and all that jazz.

      Ehhh... might just want to have other folks to chip in context on the fly. Especially since you also want some Drakengard lore as well for that one.

      @@CaffeinatedDad cool! These are not totally representative of modern raid bosses because the game and design changed a lot after stormblood, but they're iconic fights anyway. This is also before Heavensward standardized indicators so a lot of mechanics are just not clear on what they do so that's an extra challenge.

    ARR trailer only makes sense if you played v1.0 -- Bahamut is Yoshi-P recreating Eorzea from the ashes. You should search for the v1.0 in-game event where you can literally see Bahamut about to destroy the world. Up until today, Heavensward is still has the best story telling followed by Shadowbringer -- the rest are meh. Welcome to the dragoon corps.
