CFExpress Type B Card: SanDisk vs AngelBird

- SanDisk CF Express Card could be a better card. It could be but it is not what we should expect it to be. When looking at the SanDisk CFExpress card vs the AngelBird CFExpress card we really do see a signifant difference where one can argue that SanDisk has dropped the ball. That being said, it is a good card overall, however, in my opinion not worth the money.
If you are thinking significant investment with this SanDisk CFExpress card, in my opinion, there are other manufacturers that can do better. The comparison with the AngelBird CFExpress card shows as some key differences with how cards are made, how they handle heat, and of course, how they will handle the higher end camarages. Flagships do need better and at this price point SanDisk just doesn't cut it.
AngelBird has been a great company to deal with. The products they have released come at a good price point and allow the end user to get some better opportunity at utilizing the newer cameras and their features. The AngelBird SE is a must at it's price point even if it is just a back up card. In most cases this will be the go to card. The AngelBird SX although attractive in nature is simple to small for the size of the images that these new camaras demand. The speed is great but lets be real, the size just will not cut it. The Pro MK2 will be tested soon as I have ordered them. I do believe they will be the go to card for most professionals.

Thank you, I have been using Sandisk SD Extreme cards for close to 10 years in so many different cameras without a single problem, now when I am on the verge to step into CFExpress world you have saved me a lot of trouble with this test. It would seem SanDisk hasn't quite got their CFExpress game together.

I have been using SanDisk 256GB CFExpress for around 2 years now on R5. I have two of them. I don’t shoot 20 frames frames per second often; but I do shoot 8K RAW and mainly 4K 120. With that I never saw any issue. However; price is high and the card does get hot and the transfer rate from the card to the computer does rescue after some time. I was not sure if it was for overheat as on electric equipments 70°C or 80°C is not that abnormal!
Now with a memory card; reliability is key. I had several issues in past with Kingstone card where both of them failed and I lost one morning of shooting in Iceland with awesome light. If anyone of you did serious photography in Iceland you know what it means as it is one in a week thing!
That is why I am bit susceptive about other cards.
I saw these Angelbird cards sometime doesn’t work on R5C due to firmware update or not. But it is probably worth giving a try. Specially due to the high capacity of it that Sandisk or anyone else offer.
So they did enter the market with good offering.
I have soooo many scandisk sd cards but only 1 CF express card, i have 8 Angle-bird cards of various sizes watched a couple of youtube vlogs that recommended the Angle-bird so since then i have only purchased the Anglebird products.
SD, CF express atmos ssd etc. I have all Angle-bird card readers (got 3 of them at the moment SD CF and CFast) All CF express cards have the latest firmware on them and thats another thing Angle-bird gives you software to keep the firmware updated on their cards fantastic have not seen any other card manufacturer provide that service.
Great video very informative maybe Scan disk have got complacent with their success over the years and a company like Angel-bird can move i to the market and make these bigger companies respond to the competition which in turn is good for us in the long term anyway keep up the good work I have subscribed to your channel
Great detailed and helpful video. Was thinking of buying a SanDisk for my Z9 to replace the Angelbird 512 SE card I just bought. Never used the Angelbird card bc right out of the box it is not recognised by my computer so it's useless (and no I am not going to buy an Angelbird card reader just for this purpose, I already have an expensive Lexar reader). On top of that the card is very tough to insert and eject from my camera which IMHO indicates sloppy production quality. There must be a reason Angelbird cards are so much cheaper than competing brands. That said, thanks to your video I know I won't need to spend my hard earned Benjamins on a Sandisk as it looks like the company really has just become a cash cow for a much bigger company now. Had a Sandisk 128Gb CFexpress last year and it would get so hot in the R5 you could hardly handle it.

Super curious, which card reader where you using to do these tests, I recently purchased a 128 GB CFe B card from SanDisk, and using the angel bird card reader (previously purchased with two other angel bird cards)...
I literally am sitting here staring at under 40 MB/s and over 2 hours transferring a few thousand files with the SanDisk card and angel bird reader...
I heard that presently there are no cameras that can write at greater then 800 mbps sustained speed?
Nikos, great review ! Yet, sorry, throwing something in for a spin. Is heat dissipation and cool down, safe guards, a way of saving the card from faster degradation? Let's be clear, I'm asking a question, truly. In no way am I criticizing your review, you put way too much well explained rigour into it. Could that be the damd heat debate? They safe guard, cross their fingers it will reduce future fail issues? You sold me on SanDisk taking a drop though. Too many brands are being swallowed up by holdings, that have no clue in the end user experience ie; pro users relying on the product they sell.
It could be a TLC with que issue. When my nvme it goes fast until the queue is full and then slows down with TLC. Then when the queue empties the speed goes back up. Cheaper NVME's have a Triple state (TLC) or quad state with queue. Expensive one have a single state.
Which is the best of the Angelbirds please, just sent one back as it was mk1 and not compatible with my fuji x-h2
I dont need massive capacity, its just for hobby use but I do want the best card
I did only use sandisk v90 UHS-II cards only in my EOS R but I got a R6 and the cards kept slowly down and taking longer and longer to write to the card so I when the the Angelbird AV PRO SD v90 MK2 cards and I haven’t had a problem since I changed to Angelbird
That's awesome and good to know. I ended up going with prograde for the V90 cards because of price point but kind of regret not going for Angelbird. I upgraded my CFExpress cards to the Pro MK2 though. Super happy about it!
Since this is a year old problem, in your knowledge, is this been addressed?

Im Kostas from Greece and some days before i order Sony a7iv with Sony Tough SF-G SDXC 128GB U3 V90 card.
I had a7iii for 2 years with simple card and simple card reader..
My question is ,do i need a new "special" card reader for this new sd card that i ll get at a month from now??

That camera you are buying is great and there is a slow motion setting that requires the speed of type A card. I would assume you would want to eventually get type A card in the future when the prices come down. There is this reader as well for it: shop.progradedigital.com/collections/workflow-readers/products/prograde-digital-cfx_a-sdxc-sdhc-usb-3-2-gen-2-dual-slot-card-reader. I would probably go for the second one as in the future if you do upgrade you would want to have this.

Ive been using a 4TB ANGELBIRD CF EXPRESS FOR A MONTH OR SO. Flawless at all codecs and frame rate. After the 2.0 firmware update i got an error the cfexpess exceeds 2tb and wont function. The nikon z9 is a beast so this card is fast enough and work as it did before the update! Why is this throttling just now put in place and make a proven by my eye not work now after the fact? I would had sent it back the same day of testing if i received the 2tb error from the get go? There was no over heating. Thanks

One could argue yes and no. I think the material is made to withstand long term. However, they offer lifetime warranty on the cards so my assumption is no.
To add to it, I could see them make version 2 and then replace them on warranty down the road when they stop producing these.
I actually bought a Prograde CF Exp card for my camera.
I had to bought this card. i have D850..
first time i put card insede and camera show me r27, so i think it’s good. But than i nevwr see again this … always changing, i run camera with 9 f/p it only 27 shot!!! so I have sandisk 128 sd card uhs1 -and with this card i get 21 shots. Once with 7 f/ps i saw 43 shots but i repeat ONCE!! there is very low write speed ( i think about 100-150 megabyt/sec ) So if you need a space ok but if you need speed NOOO!
My AngelBird got corrupted and slow. Was not really impressed with it, I dont think it lives up to its speed. Not even used it that much. Not to get heat up on. Yet the card looks bended now.
I would contact support and get that replaced. I haven't had issues tbh. That being said, I did corrupt it once in the daily use of it and there has been some noticeable slowdown with my camera starting after using them this long.

depends on what you use your camera for? Stills only? Go with the SX - faster maximum speeds, and faster sustained speeds, but lower storage level. If you shoot a lot of video, go for the SE or pro range...lower sustained speeds, but $ per storage, better value.
