As a 1500 blitz player, I watch this and I'm like, "am I really that bad?". Yes. Yes I am.
My best rating yet was 1860 but i think players below 2400 - 2500 are nowhere near a good player.

Count Grishnackh I don’t know. I think there is a lot of natural ability needed, not just hard work. I don’t think I’d ever become an elite chess player. I have good memorization skills, so I could possible get really far in learning lines and such, but I’m not a very visual person or learner, so I don’t think any amount of hard work could get me to this level of playing.

Will IV neuro-plasticity is a thing. These elite chess players spend ~4hours + a day playing chess ever single day ever since they’re like 7. That’s equivalent to 1 year of chess 24/7 playtime every 6 years. People are underestimating the results of long term hard work too much these days. It’s also the case that it doesn’t pay off in a visible way until you pass a certain threshold of time spent and skills honed - threshold that very few people cross, whether it’s in games, music instruments, or academia.
Magnus makes $2mil per year and yet he uses a $40 setup when he does videos/streams for chess24.
He doesn't make 2 million a year, his net worth is 8 million
@@ym276 I'm going off what Naka said. It isn't unlikely, however. Net worth websites literally just guess based off public assets, and he wouldn't have been earning at such a high level until the last year or two.
So, how does Hikaru make this much per year? He said he makes 224K. Im guessing some of that is through red bull. But I'm wondering how much of it is from tournament winnings, especially when you deduct global travel expenses, is chess at an IM or GM level profitable if you aren't sponsored?
@@Christoff070 I would imagine most of his earnings are not from tourney winnings. Sponsors probably pay a good chunk of the bills. He said $50k was from a single tourney, but there aren't many with those kind of cash prizes. Maybe winning a large amount of smaller events would supplement his income. I'd have to guess Red Bull and potentially even Chess.com are the primary sources.
@@Christoff070 licensing is usually the biggest earner - doing instructional videos, books etc. Sponsorship is another possibility.

My guess would have been that Naka makes close to $500k a year. I suppose the endorsements for chess are probably pretty miniscule. Still $250k is nothing to scoff at. Especially when you enjoy your work. People suggesting to buy exotic cars just crack me up. People dont want to make money they just want to spend it. Its a mindset that keeps you broke.
His car philosophy is strong. I've used the same philosophy. Cars in the 35k mileage range are the sweet spot for value. I pay cash and haven't had a car payment since 2006.
@@robloxvids2233 Buying a used car is essentially giving away money, you are absolutely correct. Buying used cars is the way to go! New cars aren't worth it until you can pay in cash (by this I mean with no loans/debt)

because you aren't stressing them out by playing perfect chess all game. If you play someone as good as Hikaru eventually the pressure gets to you and blunder something ridiculous, but it's really Hikarus doing.
I think it's because hikaru plays instantly. That suggests to the other player to try to do the same. And they end up eating school mate

I think the only place in the world where a change of tyres costs 1k is USA. In Eastern Europe you can do this with 10 bucks.

Or you can do it yourself for only an hour of time, and service geometry only once a year or two.
The tires them selves, a full set, can range from $300 - $1200 for a full set, then people pay a $60 - $90 'labor' fee. Most of that money is simply the tires. I know of no places that charge $1000 to change a set of tires. Unless it's a fuckin Lambo.

If you own a BMW you need to go to specialized shop and get specialized gear and it costs a fortune. You can't just waltz in to any random shop like you could if you had owned a cheap car. That's what he's talking about.

Not a chess book, but to become better, check out the CZcams channel and chess courses of "Remote Chess Academy". Best chess teacher I've ever had
If you undestand french, the channel of blitzstream have many pedagogy video on every level ( 850, 1000, 1200, 1500, 1800 ) and it's very interesting.

I don't have a books to recommend but check out video lessons by gingerGM. Learn the London System and the Dutch. Review your games and you'll make it to 1500.

A one-participant 401(k) that you set up as a self-employed individual is often better than a SEP-IRA. They have the same annual limit for "employer" contributions (25% of salary or 20% of earned income up to something like $56k), but the one-participant 401(k) ALSO lets you make an "employee" contribution of up to $19500 in addition to the employer contribution.
If you're making enough money to max out your SEP-IRA at $56k or whatever then it doesn't make a difference, though.

Hey Naka, SEP-IRA's have high contribution limits, but so do Individual 401k's. SEP IRA is up to 25% of your salary, not to exceed $56k in 2019. Individual (Solo) 401k is $19k + 20% of income. The limit is the same $56k in 2019. For certain self-employed individuals, a Solo 401k is better, as income may fluctuate and even if you make $20k in that year, you can invest all of it. If you have a SEP IRA, you can only invest $5k that year.
@25:57 just buy index funds even if you do have a 'fair chunk of change'.... it gets much larger over the years ;)
